Modal cut-off and the V-parameter in photonic crystal fibers
We address the long-standing unresolved problem concerning the V-parameter in
a photonic crystal fiber (PCF). Formulate the parameter appropriate for a
core-defect in a periodic structure we argue that the multi-mode cut-off occurs
at a wavelength lambda* which satisfies V_PCF(lambda*)=pi. Comparing to
numerics and recent cut-off calculations we confirm this result.Comment: 3 pages including 2 figures. Accepted for Optics Letter
Evidence of vorticity and shear at large angular scales in the WMAP data: a violation of cosmological isotropy?
Motivated by the large-scale asymmetry observed in the cosmic microwave
background sky, we consider a specific class of anisotropic cosmological models
-- Bianchi type VII_h -- and compare them to the WMAP first-year data on large
angular scales. Remarkably, we find evidence of a correlation which is ruled
out as a chance alignment at the 3sigma level. The best fit Bianchi model
corresponds to x=0.55, Omega_0=0.5, a rotation axis in the direction
(l,b)=(222degr,-62degr), shear (sigma/H)_0=2.4e-10 and a right--handed
vorticity (omega/H)_0=6.1e-10. Correcting for this component greatly reduces
the significance of the large-scale power asymmetry, resolves several anomalies
detected on large angular scales (ie. the low quadrupole amplitude and
quadrupole/octopole planarity and alignment), and can account for a
non--Gaussian "cold spot" on the sky. Despite the apparent inconsistency with
the best-fit parameters required in inflationary models to account for the
acoustic peaks, we consider the results sufficiently provocative to merit

Partly Occupied Wannier Functions
We introduce a scheme for constructing partly occupied, maximally localized
Wannier functions (WFs) for both molecular and periodic systems. Compared to
the traditional occupied WFs the partly occupied WFs posses improved symmetry
and localization properties achieved through a bonding-antibonding closing
procedure. We demonstrate the equivalence between bonding-antibonding closure
and the minimization of the average spread of the WFs in the case of a benzene
molecule and a linear chain of Pt atoms. The general applicability of the
method is demonstrated through the calculation of WFs for a metallic system
with an impurity: a Pt wire with a hydrogen molecular bridge.Comment: 5 pages, 4 figure
Probing the Binary Black Hole Merger Regime with Scalar Perturbations
We present results obtained by scattering a scalar field off the curved
background of a coalescing binary black hole system. A massless scalar field is
evolved on a set of fixed backgrounds, each provided by a spatial hypersurface
generated numerically during a binary black hole merger. We show that the
scalar field scattered from the merger region exhibits quasinormal ringing once
a common apparent horizon surrounds the two black holes. This occurs earlier
than the onset of the perturbative regime as measured by the start of the
quasinormal ringing in the gravitational waveforms. We also use the scalar
quasinormal frequencies to associate a mass and a spin with each hypersurface,
and observe the compatibility of this measure with the horizon mass and spin
computed from the dynamical horizon framework.Comment: 10 Pages and 6 figure
Onset of Localization in Heterogeneous Interfacial Failure
We study numerically the failure of an interface joining two elastic
materials under load using a fiber bundle model connected to an elastic half
space. We find that the breakdown process follows the equal load sharing fiber
bundle model without any detectable spatial correlations between the positions
of the failing fibers until localization sets in. The onset of localization is
an instability, not a phase transition. Depending on the elastic constant
describing the elastic half space, localization sets in before or after the
critical load causing the interface to fail completely, is reached. There is a
crossover between failure due to localization or failure without spatial
correlations when tuning the elastic constant, not a phase transition. Contrary
to earlier claims based on models different from ours, we find that a finite
fraction of fibers must fail before the critical load is attained, even in the
extreme localization regime, i.e.\ for very small elastic constant. We
furthermore find that the critical load remains finite for all values of the
elastic constant in the limit of an infinitely large system.Comment: 4 pages, 5 figure

droplets are derived, incorporating the ripplon and phonon degrees of freedom.
The microcanonical temperature and the ripplon angular momentum level density
are also evaluated. The approach is based on inversions and systematic

Smooth cutoff formulation of hierarchical reference theory for a scalar phi4 field theory
The phi4 scalar field theory in three dimensions, prototype for the study of
phase transitions, is investigated by means of the hierarchical reference
theory (HRT) in its smooth cutoff formulation. The critical behavior is
described by scaling laws and critical exponents which compare favorably with
the known values of the Ising universality class. The inverse susceptibility
vanishes identically inside the coexistence curve, providing a first principle
implementation of the Maxwell construction, and shows the expected
discontinuity across the phase boundary, at variance with the usual sharp
cutoff implementation of HRT. The correct description of first and second order
phase transitions within a microscopic, nonperturbative approach is thus
achieved in the smooth cutoff HRT.Comment: 8 pages, 4 figure
