    Scatter factor : molecular characteristics and effect on the invasiveness of epithelial cells

    The generation of invasiveness in transformed cells represents an essential step of tumor progression. We have previously shown that MDCK epithelial cells, which are deprived of intracellular adhesion by the addition of anti-Arc-1/uvomorulin antibodies, become invasive for collagen gels and embryonal heart tissue (Behrens, J., M. M. Mareel, F. M. Van Roy, and W. Birchmeier. 1989. J. Cell Biol. 108: 2435-2447.). Here we examined whether invasiveness is also induced by scatter factor, which is known to dissociate epithelial cells (Stoker, M., E. Gherardi, M. Perryman, and J. Gray. 1987. Nature (Lond.). 327:239-242.). Scatter factor was purified to homogeneity from conditioned medium of human fibroblasts by heparin-Sepharose chromatography, followed by cation exchange chromatography, gel filtration, or preparative SDS gel electrophoresis. We found that scatter factor represents a 92,000 mol wt glycoprotein which, apparently, is converted by limited proteolysis into disulfide-linked 62,000 and 34/32,000 mol wt subunits. Reversed phase HPLC and sequence analysis of tryptic peptides confirmed the suggested molecular structure, and revealed further that scatter factor exhibits sequence similarities to hepatocyte growth factor and to plasminogen. Purified scatter factor in fact induces the invasiveness into collagen matrices of MDCK epithelial cells, and induces or promotes the invasiveness of a number of human carcinoma cell lines. Apparently, the effect on the human cells depends on their respective degree of differentiation, i.e., cell lines with a less pronounced epithelial phenotype were more susceptible to the factor. Scatter factor does not seem to influence synthesis, steady-state level, and phosphorylation of the cell adhesion molecule Arc-1/uvomorulin. Thus, scatter factor represents a clearly defined molecular species which induces, in vitro, the progression of epithelial cells to a more motile, i.e., invasive phenotype

    Fixed-Effect Regressions on Network Data

    This paper considers inference on fixed effects in a linear regression model estimated from network data. An important special case of our setup is the two-way regression model. This is a workhorse technique in the analysis of matched data sets, such as employer-employee or student-teacher panel data. We formalize how the structure of the network affects the accuracy with which the fixed effects can be estimated. This allows us to derive sufficient conditions on the network for consistent estimation and asymptotically-valid inference to be possible. Estimation of moments is also considered. We allow for general networks and our setup covers both the dense and sparse case. We provide numerical results for the estimation of teacher value-added models and regressions with occupational dummies

    Talk-based approaches to support people who are distressed by their experience of hearing voices: a scoping review

    Background: The positive effects of both antipsychotic medication and cognitive behavioral therapy in psychosis (CBTp) for people who are distressed by their experience of hearing voices remain limited. As a result, there has been a recent surge in talk-based individual approaches. Many of these continue not to be very well known nor implemented in practice. Some of the approaches may focus more on understanding and dealing constructively with voices, an element that has been identified as potentially helpful by voice hearers. Existing barriers to a wider implementation include both the widespread pathologization of hearing voices and a lack of mental health professionals who have been trained and trusted to carry out these new interventions. Methods: This scoping review aimed to identify and describe a current synthesis of talk-based individual approaches for people who hear voices, including studies independently of method of study or approach, diagnosis of voice hearers nor of the professional background of interventionists. Results: Nine different talk-based approaches were identified. These included: (1) Cognitive Behavioral Therapy for Psychosis (CBTp); (2) AVATAR therapy; (3) Making Sense of Voices (MsV) aka Experience Focused Counselling (EFC); (4) Relating Therapy; (5) Acceptance and Commitment Therapy; (6) Smartphone-based Coping-focused Intervention; (7) Prolonged and Virtual Reality Exposure Therapy; (8) Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing, and (9) Individual Mindfulness-based Program for Voice Hearing. The different approaches differed greatly in relation to the number of sessions, length of time offered and the scientific evidence on efficacy. Psychologists represented the main professional group of interventionists. CBTp and the MsV/EFC approach also included health professionals, like nurses, as implementers. Most of the approaches showed positive outcomes in relation to voice related distress levels. None identified overall or voice specific deteriorations. Conclusion: There appears to be a strong case for the implementation of a broader heterogeneity of approaches in practice. This would also be in line with recommendations for recovery focused services and requirements of voice hearers. A greater emphasis on whole systems implementation and thus the involvement of frontline staff, like nurses, in the delivery of these approaches would likely reduce the research-practice implementation gap

    Peer-Assisted Learning and Orthopaedic Evaluation Psychomotor Skills

    Context: Athletic training educators often anecdotally suggest that athletic training students enhance their learning by teaching their peers. However, peer-assisted learning (PAL) has not been examined within athletic training education to provide evidence for PAL's current use or for its use as a pedagogic tool. Objective: To assess the effectiveness of intentional, formal PAL on the performance of psychomotor skills and to identify students' perceptions of PAL. Design: Randomized, pretest-posttest experimental design. Setting: Athletic Training Research and Education Laboratory. Patients or Other Participants: Fifty-one undergraduate students (27 athletic training majors, 24 nonmajors). Intervention(s): Review sessions led by either an Approved Clinical Instructor or peer tutor. Main Outcome Measure(s): We assessed pretest and posttest performance scores (number of correct skills) and the amount of time to complete the psychomotor skills in 3 categories of orthopaedic evaluation of the hand and wrist for subjects assigned to either a peer tutor or an Approved Clinical Instructor review group. Using the Athletic Training Peer-Assisted Learning Assessment Survey, we evaluated the perceptions of students assigned to the peer-tutor group regarding the benefits of, and preferences for, PAL. Results: Differences in the pretest-posttest skill scores were noted in both groups (P < .05). No differences in the posttest skills scores or the times to perform the skills were seen between the groups. The Athletic Training Peer-Assisted Learning Assessment Survey revealed that most (n = 19, 70.4%) of the subjects felt less anxious when practicing psychomotor skills with peer tutors than with the laboratory instructor, and many students (n = 12, 44.4%) felt more self-confident when practicing psychomotor skills with a peer tutor. Conclusions: Peer-assisted learning appears to be a valid method for improving athletic training psychomotor skills. Peers can be resources for practicing clinical skills and report benefiting from the collaboration. Peer-assisted learning should be deliberately integrated into athletic training education programs to enhance student learning and collaboration

    Analysis of Scramjet Flight Trajectories with Oxygen Enrichment

    Scramjets are proposed as a second stage for a multi-stage access-to-space system. At present the upper limit of scramjet operation is expected to be Mach 12-14. Use of oxygen enrichment is a possible method for increasing the speed and altitude of scramjet operation. This paper involves mission analysis of scramjets using oxygen enrichment. It follows on from Smart & Tetlow [5], in which trajectory studies of a threestage rocket-scramjet-rocket access-to-space system were conducted. These calculations indicated that the net thrust (scramjet thrust - vehicle drag) of a hypersonic vehicle with three scramjet engine modules was reduced to very low levels above Mach 12. The current work examines the use of oxygen enrichment in the scramjet to increase net thrust above Mach 10. Results of the study indicate that an important effect of oxygen enrichment is to allow scramjet powered vehicle operation at higher altitude

    The Manned Earth Observatory (MEO) study being conducted by TRW under the management of NASA/MSFC will establish the conceptual design of and the mission requirements for an Earth Observation Laboratory that will be flown on Shuttle missions beginning in 1980. MEO offers a variety of unique inroads to improving our understanding of the marine environment. The Shuttle-MEO is a valuable addition to a multi-level multi-disciplinary remote sensing program. The unique attributes of MEO are its experimental flexibility due to man-instrument interaction, its complimentary orbit (intermediate between nonorbital and high-orbital platforms), its high weight and volume capacity and short duration missions

    Cryptorchidism and hypospadias in sons of gardeners and farmers.

    Cryptorchidism and hypospadias have been related to prenatal estrogen exposure in animal models. Some chemicals used in farming and gardening have been shown to possess estrogenic and other hormone-disrupting effects. Earlier studies have indicated increased risks of urogenital malformations in the sons of pesticide appliers. In the present study, parental occupation in the farming and gardening industry among 6,177 cases of cryptorchidism, 1,345 cases of hypospadias, and 23,273 controls, born live from 1983 to 1992 in Denmark, was investigated in a register-based case-control study. A significantly increased risk of cryptorchidism but not hypospadias was found in sons of women working in gardening (adjusted odds ratio = 1.67; 95% confidence interval, 1.14-2.47). The risks were not increased in sons of men working in farming or gardening. The increased risk of cryptorchidism among sons of female gardeners could suggest an association with prenatal exposure to occupationally related chemicals
