The role of Cytochrome P450 17-alpha-Hydroxylase/ 17,20-Lyase (CYP17) in the stress coping ability in a divergently selected Merino sheep population
South African Merino sheep were selected divergently from the same base population for their ability to rear multiples. Two distinct populations were formed over a period of more than 20 years of selection. Reproduction (and therefore presumably fitness) in the line selected in the upward direction (H-line) was substantially improved compared to the line selected in the downward direction (L-line). In the present study, it was demonstrated that the H-line was more stresstolerant
than the L-line in terms of their glucose and cortisol response when challenged with insulin. Sheep from the breeding program were genotyped according to one of two cytochrome P450 17α-hydroxylase/17-20 lyase (CYP17) alleles, as these genotypes were previously linked to the ability of Angora goats to cope with external stressors. However, no association was found between CYP17 genotype and selection line. The difference in insulin induced stress response between the H- and the L-line can therefore not be attributed to CYP17 genotype
The quality of service delivery by the estate agency industry in Bloemfontein
A large number of estate agents entered the real estate industry in the last few years. At the same time the client rating of the quality of services offered by estate agents in the industry followed a downward trend. This perception of poor quality is causing a negative impact on the industry. Research done in 2004 has identified that clients within the Bloemfontein region are generally not satisfied with the level of service delivery by estate agents within the industry.
Respondents did identify certain areas that could be improved in order for estate agents to deliver a superior level of service. On the basis of this research and recommendations, it was possible to develop a model of the service delivery that will maximise the satisfaction of both buyers and sellers
Time and cost assessment of the manufacturing of tooling by metal casting in rapid prototyping sand moulds
Published ArticleIn this paper the time and cost parameters of tooling manufacturing by metal casting in rapid prototyping sand moulds are assessed and comparison is made with alternative tool making processes such as computer numerical control machining and investment casting (Paris Process). To that end two case studies obtained from local companies were carried out. The tool manufacturing was conducted according to a five steps process chain referred to as Rapid Casting for Tooling (RCT). These steps include CAD modelling, casting simulation, rapid prototyping, metal casting and finishing operations. In particular the Rapid Prototyping (RP) step for producing the sand moulds was achieved with the aid of an EOSINT S 550 Laser Sintering machine and a Spectrum 510 Three Dimensional Printer. The results indicate that RP is the rate determining step and cost driver of the proposed tooling manufacturing technique. In addition it was found that this tool making process is faster but more expensive than machining and investment casting

A CASE STUDY OF RAPID SAND CASTING DEFECTS
ArticleRapid sand casting is quickly transforming as an established method for the production of sand moulds and cores for metal casting applications by additive manufacturing processes. The case study investigated possible sand casting defects resulting from a local implementation of rapid sand casting referred to as Rapid Casting for Tooling (RCT). Poor workmanship of the RCT process chain was found to be the root cause of sand casting defects including cold lap, gas porosity and alignment faults
Assessment of surface finish and dimensional accuracy of tools manufactured by metal casting in rapid prototyping sand moulds
Abstract In this paper, an initial assessment of the quality parameters of the surface finish and dimensional accuracy of tools made by metal casting in rapid prototyping (RP) sand moulds is undertaken. A case study from a local tool room, dealing with the manufacturing of an aluminium die for the lost wax process, is employed. Modern techniques, including surface roughness analysis and three dimensional scanning, are used to determine and understand how each manufacturing step influences the final quality of the cast tool. The best surface finish obtained for the cast die had arithmetic average roughness (Ra) and mean average roughness (Rz) respectively equal to 3.23μm and 11.38μm. In terms of dimensional accuracy, 82% of cast-die points coincided with the Computer Aided Design (CAD) data, which is within the typical tolerances of sand cast products
Spectral Energy Distributions of 6.7 GHz methanol masers
The 6.7 GHz maser transition of methanol has been found exclusively towards
massive star forming regions. A majority of the masers have been found to lack
the presence of any associated radio continuum. This could be due to the maser
emission originating prior to the formation of an HII region around the central
star, or from the central object being too cool to produce a HII region. One
way to distinguish between the two scenarios is to determine and model the
spectral energy distributions (SEDs) of the masers. We observed a sample of 20
6.7 GHz methanol masers selected from the blind Arecibo survey, from centimeter
to submillimeter wavelengths. We combined our observations with existing data
from various Galactic plane surveys to determine SEDs from centimeter to
near-infrared wavelengths. We find that 70% of the masers do not have any
associated radio continuum, with the rest of the sources being associated with
hypercompact and ultracompact HII regions. Modeling the SEDs shows them to be
consistent with rapidly accreting massive stars, with accretion rates well
above 10^{-3} M_sun/yr. The upper limits on the radio continuum are also
consistent with any ionized region being confined close to the stellar surface.
This confirms the paradigm of 6.7 GHz methanol masers being signposts of early
phases of massive star formation, mostly prior to the formation of a
hypercompact HII region.Comment: 15 pages, 4 figures; Accepted by A&
Direct -body code on low-power embedded ARM GPUs
This work arises on the environment of the ExaNeSt project aiming at design
and development of an exascale ready supercomputer with low energy consumption
profile but able to support the most demanding scientific and technical
applications. The ExaNeSt compute unit consists of densely-packed low-power
64-bit ARM processors, embedded within Xilinx FPGA SoCs. SoC boards are
heterogeneous architecture where computing power is supplied both by CPUs and
GPUs, and are emerging as a possible low-power and low-cost alternative to
clusters based on traditional CPUs. A state-of-the-art direct -body code
suitable for astrophysical simulations has been re-engineered in order to
exploit SoC heterogeneous platforms based on ARM CPUs and embedded GPUs.
Performance tests show that embedded GPUs can be effectively used to accelerate
real-life scientific calculations, and that are promising also because of their
energy efficiency, which is a crucial design in future exascale platforms.Comment: 16 pages, 7 figures, 1 table, accepted for publication in the

Absolute positions of 6.7-GHz methanol masers
The ATCA, MERLIN and VLA interferometers were used to measure the absolute
positions of 35 6.7 GHz methanol masers to subarcsecond or higher accuracy. Our
measurements represent essential preparatory data for Very Long Baseline
Interferometry, which can provide accurate parallax and proper motion
determinations of the star-forming regions harboring the masers. Our data also
allow associations to be established with infrared sources at different
wavelengths. Our findings support the view that the 6.7 GHz masers are
associated with the earliest phases of high-mass star formation.Comment: A&A accepted 29 pages, 6 figures, 5 table
Approach to the diagnosis and management of snakebite envenomation in South Africa in humans
Snakebites occur in the community, not in the Emergency Unit. As such it is important to understand the first-aid concepts and pre-hospital emergency care aspects of this neglected disease. This article will highlight the concepts for emergency care within the context of the current pre-hospital arena and in light of the recent South African Snakebite Symposium consensus meeting held in July 2022, where wilderness rescue, emergency medical services and other medical participants agreed through evidence review and consensus debate on the current best approaches to care of the snakebite victim outside the hospital environment
