The opposition and clerical universe defence phenomena are living testimonies of the path that the respect for otherness had to be built throughout History. The belief that the records of those behaviours are confined in the past is to disregard the astounding actuality that the hate doctrines, promoted not only by the secular but also by the confessional parties, have on the world. Through the textual analysis conducted in four Madeiran journals from the first decade of the 20th century, in a temporal interlude that goes from the publication of the congregations’ legalization diploma through the associative model, in 1901, to the monarchy twilight towards the republic and the eminent separation, in 1910, we identified and classified a vast sum of material, included in hundreds of analysed editions, that form a part of the thematic corpus from the two antinomic factions, the clericalism and the anti-clericalism, in Madeira. The religion that mobilizes such faith as stigmas, shapes the individual and collective identities of a nation. The environments that do not provide a plural and inclusive religious policy end up restraining and losing the promotion of debates that would lead to a universe of religious freedom

On-chip detection of low abundant protein biomarkers is of interest to enable point-of-care diagnostics. Using a simple form of integration, we have realized an integrated microfluidic platform for the detection of prostate specific antigen (PSA), directly in anti-coagulated whole blood. We combine acoustophoresis-based separation of plasma from undiluted whole blood with a miniaturized immunoassay system in a polymer manifold, demonstrating improved assay speed on our Integrated Acoustic Immunoaffinity-capture (IAI) platform. The IAI platform separates plasma from undiluted whole blood by means of acoustophoresis and provides cell free plasma of clinical quality at a rate of 10 uL/min for an online immunoaffinity-capture of PSA on a porous silicon antibody microarray. The whole blood input (hematocrit 38-40%) rate was 50 ÎŒl min(-1) giving a plasma volume fraction yield of ≈33%. PSA was immunoaffinity-captured directly from spiked female whole blood samples at clinically significant levels of 1.7-100 ng ml(-1) within 15 min and was subsequently detected via fluorescence readout, showing a linear response over the entire range with a coefficient of variation of 13%

The RHO-1 RhoGTPase Modulates Fertility and Multiple Behaviors in Adult C. elegans

The Rho family of small GTPases are essential during early embryonic development making it difficult to study their functions in adult animals. Using inducible transgenes expressing either a constitutively active version of the single C. elegans Rho ortholog, RHO-1, or an inhibitor of endogenous Rho (C3 transferase), we demonstrate multiple defects caused by altering Rho signaling in adult C. elegans. Changes in RHO-1 signaling in cholinergic neurons affected locomotion, pharyngeal pumping and fecundity. Changes in RHO-1 signaling outside the cholinergic neurons resulted in defective defecation, ovulation, and changes in C. elegans body morphology. Finally both increased and decreased RHO-1 signaling in adults resulted in death within hours. The multiple post-developmental roles for Rho in C. elegans demonstrate that RhoA signaling pathways continue to be used post-developmentally and the resulting phenotypes provide an opportunity to further study post-developmental Rho signaling pathways using genetic screens

Traditional sailing ships, as opposed to vernacular boats, evolved to consist of certain types of vessels that couldbe produced in the same way in different countries and were also sold between countries. They were usuallyengaged in longer voyages which often resulted in an international crew. The traditional sailing ships that sailinternationally today are still characterised by international crews. In my thesis I argue that traditional Westernsailing ships are part of a historically transnational maritime culture, and that their significance as transnationalcultural heritage lives on today. At the same time, traditional sailing ships have much to contribute to todays andfuture society. They are kind to maritime life, while proving to be useful instruments for achieving better mentalhealth, teamwork, and learning seamanship. Unfortunately, the great potential and importance of traditional shipsas transnational cultural heritage is rarely acknowledged, as today's heritage discourse is still strongly influencedby the hegemonic cultural discourse that author Laurajane Smith calls Authorised heritage discourse.Furthermore, today's maritime rules create both practical and economic difficulties for traditional sailing ships,as today's maritime rules are written for modern motorised ships that have completely different physical andeconomic conditions. Through interviews with primarily employees on the ships Götheborg and Tres Hombres,it appears that the greatest challenges are linked to the national regulations, and that there is a great need forpoliticians and officials to get involved in creating rules that are adapted to traditional ships. In addition, moremaritime officials with knowledge of sailing vessels are needed to achieve better safety when handling traditionalsailing vessels.Since traditional sailing ships often sail internationally, it is important that the regulations in different countriesare harmonised. One conclusion is that this is something that should be dealt with by the EU as the activities ofsailing ships are a common transnational cultural heritage that can contribute to more cooperation between theirmember countries and to strengthen international relations.Traditionella segelfartyg till skillnad frÄn allmogebÄtar, utvecklades till att bestÄ av vissa fartygstyper som kundeproduceras pÄ samma sÀtt i olika lÀnder och Àven sÀljas mellan lÀnder. Aim: To, in children, investigate the associations between serum furin, obesity, overweight, body fat and circulating markers reflecting adipose tissue or systemic inflammation. Methods: We analysed furin, leptin, adipocyte fatty acid–binding protein, triglycerides, interleukin (IL)-6, IL-8 and C-reactive protein in serum from 166 children in the Pediatric Osteoporosis Prevention (POP) study collected at mean age (SD) 9.9 (0.6) years. Children were classified as low-to-normal weight, overweight or obese. Total body fat mass (kg), trunk fat mass (kg) and total body lean mass (kg) were measured by dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry. Body fat percentage (%) was calculated. Results: We found that circulating furin levels were higher in children with obesity and overweight compared with children with low-to-normal weight (p < 0.001 and p = 0.006, respectively). Also, there were positive correlations between circulating furin, total body fat mass, trunk fat mass, body fat percentage, triglycerides, adipokines and pro-inflammatory markers. Conclusion: This study indicates associations between furin, adiposity and a pro-inflammatory milieu in children. We suggest that future studies investigate the role of furin in fat tissue inflammation and associated increased risk of cardiometabolic diseases in children. Studies should also investigate whether higher furin levels could be a link between obesity and severe coronavirus disease 2019 in children
