    Development of a Large-Area Aerogel Cherenkov Counter Onboard BESS

    This paper describes the development of a threshold type aerogel Cherenkov counter with a large sensitive area of 0.6 m2^2 to be carried onboard the BESS rigidity spectrometer to detect cosmic-ray antiprotons. The design incorporates a large diffusion box containing 46 finemesh photomultipliers, with special attention being paid to achieving good performance under a magnetic field and providing sufficient endurance while minimizing material usage. The refractive index of the aerogel was chosen to be 1.03. By utilizing the muons and protons accumulated during the cosmic-ray measurements at sea level, a rejection factor of 104^4 was obtained against muons with ÎČ≈1\beta \approx 1, while keeping 97% efficiency for protons below the threshold.Comment: 13 pages, LaTex, 9 eps figures included, submitted to NIM

    The Importance of 'Risk Radar' in Software Risk Management: A Case of a Malaysian Company

    ‘Risk radar’ is applied to a company in Malaysia, a discussion on the implementation, implications and recommendation highlighted in this paper. The scope of this study has been an analysis of risk management and risk exposure of software projects practices in the company. This study also provided the evident that the successes of the several software that goes into the Malaysian market, depending on how risk management and its plan in software development as in the case of the selected company. It also exposed on how significant is the risk management contributing to cost effective and growth. Findings also included using 80/20 rules or Pareto Principle, 80% of the risks item listed by Boehm in Ten (10) Top Risks are due to 20% of sources (i.e. soft risks). Empirical studies have shown that 80% of the software rework comes from 20% of the problems, and that many of these critical problems involve neglect of off nominal requirements and all these negligence are caused by human (soft risk) (Boehm, 1989; Boehm-Basili, 2001; Standish Group Chaos Study Report (STANDISH), 1995).The company must implement the propose system to ensure that good practice and successful implementation of software risk management is the key factor to successful creation of software that are marketable and high quality benchmarking of plant industrial solutions. It could contribute to gain competitive advantage by at least 50% of project cost due to risks such as rework, budget overruns cost overrun, content deficiencies and etc.; ability to sustain due to minimum impact by software risks; and ability to own the technology rather than uses the technology with reasonable cost in development and always meet or exceed customer requirements

    We present the status and open problems of the astrophysical sites responsible for the nucleosynthesis of Fe-group and heavier elements (with the exception of the s-process). This involves type Ia supernovae with the requirement to have a low Ye-component (for the explanation of 55Mn), the role of the core collapse supenova explosion mechanism in the composition of the Fe-group (and heavier?) ejecta, the transition between neutron star and black hole remnants as the result of the collapse of massive stars, and the relation of the latter with supernova and/or gamma-ray bursts/hypernovae. In addition, the role of compact binary mergers is discussed, especially with respect to forming the heaviest r-process elements in galactic eveolution

    Impacts of reduction of deep levels and surface passivation on carrier lifetimes in p-type 4H-SiC epilayers

    Impacts of reduction of deep levels and surface passivation on carrier lifetimes in p-type 4H-SiC epilayers are investigated. The authors reported that the carrier lifetime in n-type epilayers increased by reduction of deep levels through thermal oxidation and thermal annealing. However, the carrier lifetimes in p-type epilayers were not significantly enhanced. In this study, in order to investigate the influence of surface passivation on the carrier lifetimes, the epilayer surface was passivated by different oxidation techniques. While the improvement of the carrier lifetime in n-type epilayers was small, the carrier lifetime in p-type epilayers were remarkably improved by appropriate surface passivation. For instance, the carrier lifetime was improved from 1.4 ÎŒs to 2.6 ÎŒs by passivation with deposited SiO2 annealed in NO. From these results, it was revealed that surface recombination is a limiting factor of carrier lifetimes in p-type 4H-SiC epilayers

    Interpret Ogoh-ogoh Towards Hindu Contemporary Society

    The interpreting of the making ogoh-ogoh based on the perspective of the cultural studies in related to the festival day of the tawur kesanga towards Hindu society in Bali. It recently is an interesting phenomenon to be studied in the academics. Due to the ogoh-ogoh is made as a series for the ceremony of the tawur kesanga lately. It has been a high cost, although, in the literary texts, it does not find the existence of ogoh-ogoh become the completeness of the tawur ceremony itself. Regarding its phenomenon, the author was interested in studying in term of this. The study was intended to interpret the ideology or a truth behind the making of ogoh-ogoh shown of the religious ceremonies. It was conducted applying a qualitative approach included classifying, categorize, understand, and interpret any data or the facts by paraphrase or description, therefore, the conclusion was generally obtained. The results of the analysis were conducted. It can be understood that the making of ogoh-ogoh recently in the Hindu society in Bali, not merely means to cast out of the evil spirits that have been perceived as buta kala by the Hindu society in Bali. However, it was interpreted as a game of the ideology i.e. capitalist ideology. In term of this was evident that the making of ogoh-ogoh lately, no longer using the local materials that can be freely gotten from the surrounding environment, but must be made by lux materials that must be purchased expensive. Thus, it can be concluded that behind the making of ogoh-ogoh related with the ceremony of the tawur kesanga towards Hindu society in Bali lately was initiated by the game of the ideology i.e. capitalist ideology

    Probing nuclear skins and halos with elastic electron scattering

    I investigate the elastic electron scattering off nuclei far from the stability line. The effects of the neutron and proton skins and halos on the differential cross sections are explored. Examples are given for the charge distribution in Sn isotopes and its relation to the neutron skin. The neutron halo in 11^{11}Li and the proton halo in 8^{8}B are also investigated. Particular interest is paid to the inverse scattering problem and its dependence on the experimental precision. These studies are of particular interest for the upcoming electron ion colliders at the GSI and RIKEN facilities.Comment: 27 pages, 9 figures, accepted for publication in J. Phys.

    Kinetics of mobilization of neutrophils and their marrow pool in protein-calorie deficiency

    Migration of marrow neutrophils under basal conditions and their mobilization, following subcutaneous implantation of cover slips, were investigated in groups of protein-deficient rats, using 3HTdR with sequential autoradiography of the peripheral blood smears. Animals fed a protein-rich diet served as controls. The pattern of appearance of labeled neutrophils in the blood was identical in the two groups under basal conditions. However, a higher percentag of labeled neutrophils appeared earlier in the blood following cover slip implantation in the deficient rats as compared to controls. The inflammatory exudate on the cover slips was low throughout the period of observation in deficient animals, with a delay in the appearance of monocytes. A pool of mature neutrophils resides in the bone marrow. It is proposed that in PCM there is atrophy of all neutrophil compartments, including that of the marrow pool, associated with a proportionate reduction in the efflux of cells from one compartment to another. This proportionate reduction in efflux would explain the normal kinetics of migration of neutrophils under basal conditions in the deficient rats in spite of a reduction in the marrow pool. On the other hand, in cover slip-implanted deficient rats, appearance of larger numbers of labeled neutrophils in the blood is attributed to a reduction in size of the marrow pool. This hypothesis is substantiated by the experiments in protein-deficient monkeys in which estimation of the marrow pool of neutrophils revealed a marked reduction in the deficient animals. It is further proposed that a diminuation of the marrow pool of neutrophils and retarded mobilization of cells at the site of inflammation are important mechanism responsible for the increased susceptibility of the malnourished host to infections
