    An unusual presentation of cirrhotic pleural effusion in a patient with no ascites: a case report

    Pleural effusion that develops in a patient with cirrhosis and portal hypertension, in the absence of cardiopulmonary disease, is termed hepatic hydrothorax. Hepatic hydrothorax very rarely presents in the absence of ascites. Although the exact mechanism is somewhat controversial, pleural effusion occurs when ascitic fluid moves through diaphragmatic defects which are opened up by increased intra-abdominal pressure. We report a case report of cirrhotic pleural effusion in a patient with no clinical or radiographic evidence of ascites and discuss the pathogenesis, diagnosis and management of this condition

    Ballistic Performance of Alumina and Zirconia-toughened Alumina Against 7.62 Armour Piercing Projectile

    A study was carried out to compare the ballistic performance of high purity alumina and zirconia-toughened alumina (ZTA) using depth of penetration (DoP) test configuration against 7.62 mm armour piercing (AP) ammunition. The effect of tile thickness on the differential efficiency factor (DEF) was studied for tile thickness in the range of 3 mm to 6 mm for alumina tiles and 3 mm to 5 mm for ZTA tiles. The DEF is found to increase as tile thickness increases. An analysis on the failed shots showed that the residual shot weight does not follow a single linear relationship with ceramic tile thickness unlike the residual DoP for all thicknesses of tiles.     Nanoscale magnetic field mapping with a single spin scanning probe magnetometer

    We demonstrate quantitative magnetic field mapping with nanoscale resolution, by applying a lock-in technique on the electron spin resonance frequency of a single nitrogen-vacancy defect placed at the apex of an atomic force microscope tip. In addition, we report an all-optical magnetic imaging technique which is sensitive to large off-axis magnetic fields, thus extending the operation range of diamond-based magnetometry. Both techniques are illustrated by using a magnetic hard disk as a test sample. Owing to the non-perturbing and quantitative nature of the magnetic probe, this work should open up numerous perspectives in nanomagnetism and spintronics

    Micro and small business is an entity that is privately owned and operated, with a small number of employees and relatively low volume of sales. The term MSE incorporates firms in both the formal and informal sectors. The main purpose of this study is to critically evaluate the loan repayment performance of privately owned small-scale enterprises financed by Omo Micro Finance Institution and to investigate the major determinants behind their loan recovery record and to examine the impact of the identified factors on the loan repayment performance of Micro and Small Enterprises credit scheme. In this study both descriptive and causal type of the Research design is used Population comprised of Borrowers of 278 Micro and Small Enterprises of Omo micro finance in Wolaita Sodo town. Stratified Random sampling is used. the first stage, by stratified sampling 164 MSEs were selected based on the pre-determined scientific method from five different sectors of enterprise organization in the sector from the town. For the study Primary as well as secondary data had been used. Structured questionnaire had been used to collect first hand data from small and micro enterprises through field survey. The data collected from the field were analyzed using the descriptive statistical tools like percentages, mean and standard deviation. In addition, the regression model (multiple regression models) had been used to analyze the loan repayment performance of the micro and small enterprises. The variables are Beneficiary size of the enterprises, business related experience, loan size, loan supervision, loan initiation and suitability of repayment situation. The evidences of both descriptive analysis and multiple regression show that business related experience is found to be one of the major determinants adversely affecting the loan repayment performance.The informal sector will benefit from the study findings by understanding the reasons why financial institutions are not able to meet some of their financial demands whilst having pending loan repayment cases from their sector. The study is expected to stimulate more research on factors that influence loan repayment in other sectors of the economy and develop ways in which loan repayment rates can be improve

    Spin polarized tunneling in MgO-based tunnel junctions with superconducting electrodes

    We prepared magnetic tunnel junctions with one ferromagnetic and one superconducting Al-Si electrode. Pure cobalt electrodes were compared with a Co-Fe-B alloy and the Heusler compound Co2FeAl. The polarization of the tunneling electrons was determined using the Maki-Fulde-model and is discussed along with the spin-orbit scattering and the total pair-breaking parameters. The junctions were post-annealed at different temperatures to investigate the symmetry filtering mechanism responsible for the giant tunneling magnetoresistance ratios in Co-Fe-B/ MgO/ Co-Fe-B junctions.Comment: 11 pages, 5 figure

    Developing a microbial consortium for removing nutrients in dishwasher wastewater: towards a biofilter for its up-cycling

    Microbial consortia are effective biofilters to treat wastewaters, allowing for resource recovery and water remediation. To re-use and save water in the domestic cycle, we assembled a suspended biofilm, a ‘biofilter’ to treat dishwasher wastewater. Bacterial monocultures of both photo- and hetero-trophs were assembled in an increasingly complex fashion to test their nutrient stripping capacity. This ‘biofilter’ is the core of an integrated system devoted to re-using and upcycling of reconditioned wastewater, partly in subsequent dishwasher cycles and partly into a vertical garden for plant food cultivation. The biofilter has been assembled based on a strain of the photosynthetic, filamentous cyanobacterium Trichormus variabilis, selected to produce an oxygen evolving scaffold, and three heterotrophic aerobic bacterial isolates coming from the dishwasher wastewater itself: Acinetobacter, Exiguobacterium and Pseudomonas spp. The consortium has been constructed starting with 16 isolates tested one-to-one with T. variabilis and then selecting the heterotrophic microbes up to a final one-to-three consortium, which included two dominant and a rare component of the wastewater community. This consortium thrives in the wastewater much better than T. variabilis alone, efficiently stripping N and P in short time, a pivotal step to the reuse and saving of water in household appliances

    Respiratory disorders are responsible for considerable morbidity, health care utilisation, societal costs and approximately one in five deaths worldwide [1-4]. Yet, despite this substantial health and societal burden – which particularly affects the world’s poorest populations and as such is a major contributor to global health inequalities – respiratory disorders have historically not received the policy priority they warrant. For example, despite causing an estimated 1000 deaths per day, less than half of the world’s countries collect data on asthma prevalence (http://www.globalasthmareport.org/).
