Two Component Heat Diffusion Observed in CMR Manganites
We investigate the low-temperature electron, lattice, and spin dynamics of
LaMnO_3 (LMO) and La_0.7Ca_0.3MnO_3 (LCMO) by resonant pump-probe reflectance
spectroscopy. Probing the high-spin d-d transition as a function of time delay
and probe energy, we compare the responses of the Mott insulator and the
double-exchange metal to the photoexcitation. Attempts have previously been
made to describe the sub-picosecond dynamics of CMR manganites in terms of a
phenomenological three temperature model describing the energy transfer between
the electron, lattice and spin subsystems followed by a comparatively slow
exponential decay back to the ground state. However, conflicting results have
been reported. Here we first show clear evidence of an additional component in
the long term relaxation due to film-to-substrate heat diffusion and then
develop a modified three temperature model that gives a consistent account for
this feature. We confirm our interpretation by using it to deduce the bandgap
in LMO. In addition we also model the non-thermal sub-picosecond dynamics,
giving a full account of all observed transient features both in the insulating
LMO and the metallic LCMO.Comment: 6 pages, 5 figures http://link.aps.org/doi/10.1103/PhysRevB.81.064434

Stellar Limb-Darkening Coefficients for CoRot and Kepler
Transiting exoplanets provide unparalleled access to the fundamental
parameters of both extrasolar planets and their host stars. We present
limb-darkening coefficients (LDCs) for the exoplanet hunting CoRot and Kepler
missions. The LDCs are calculated with ATLAS stellar atmospheric model grids
and span a wide range of Teff, log g, and metallically [M/H]. Both CoRot and
Kepler contain wide, nonstandard response functions, and are producing a large
inventory of high-quality transiting lightcurves, sensitive to stellar limb
darkening. Comparing the stellar model limb darkening to results from the first
seven CoRot planets, we find better fits are found when two model intensities
at the limb are excluded in the coefficient calculations. This calculation
method can help to avoid a major deficiency present at the limbs of the 1D
stellar models.Comment: Accepted for publication in A&A. 4 pages, 2 figures, 2 tables. Full

Consistently Simulating a Wide Range of Atmospheric Scenarios for K2-18b with a Flexible Radiative Transfer Module
The atmospheres of small, potentially rocky exoplanets are expected to cover
a diverse range in composition and mass. Studying such objects therefore
requires flexible and wide-ranging modeling capabilities. We present in this
work the essential development steps that lead to our flexible radiative
transfer module, REDFOX, and validate REDFOX for the Solar system planets
Earth, Venus and Mars, as well as for steam atmospheres. REDFOX is a
k-distribution model using the correlated-k approach with random overlap method
for the calculation of opacities used in the -two-stream approximation
for radiative transfer. Opacity contributions from Rayleigh scattering, UV /
visible cross sections and continua can be added selectively. With the improved
capabilities of our new model, we calculate various atmospheric scenarios for
K2-18b, a super-Earth / sub-Neptune with 8 M orbiting in the
temperate zone around an M-star, with recently observed HO spectral
features in the infrared. We model Earth-like, Venus-like, as well as H-He
primary atmospheres of different Solar metallicity and show resulting climates
and spectral characteristics, compared to observed data. Our results suggest
that K2-18b has an H-He atmosphere with limited amounts of HO and
CH. Results do not support the possibility of K2-18b having a water
reservoir directly exposed to the atmosphere, which would reduce atmospheric
scale heights, hence too the amplitudes of spectral features inconsistent with
the observations. We also performed tests for H-He atmospheres up to 50
times Solar metallicity, all compatible with the observations.Comment: 28 pages, 13 figures, accepted for publication in Ap

Proxima Centauri b: A Strong Case for Including Cosmic-Ray-induced Chemistry in Atmospheric Biosignature Studies
Due to its Earth-like minimum mass of 1.27 M-E and its close proximity to our solar system, Proxima Centauri b is one of the most interesting exoplanets for habitability studies. Its host star, Proxima Centauri, is however a strongly flaring star, which is expected to provide a very hostile environment for potentially habitable planets. We perform a habitability study of Proxima Centauri b assuming an Earth-like atmosphere under high stellar particle bombardment, with a focus on spectral transmission features. We employ our extensive model suite calculating energy spectra of stellar particles, their journey through the planetary magnetosphere, ionosphere, and atmosphere, ultimately providing planetary climate and spectral characteristics, as outlined in Herbst et al. Our results suggest that together with the incident stellar energy flux, high particle influxes can lead to efficient heating of the planet well into temperate climates, by limiting CH4 amounts, which would otherwise run into antigreenhouse for such planets around M stars. We identify some key spectral features relevant for future spectral observations: First, NO2 becomes the major absorber in the visible, which greatly impacts the Rayleigh slope. Second, H2O features can be masked by CH4 (near-infrared) and CO2 (mid- to far-infrared), making them nondetectable in transmission. Third, O-3 is destroyed and instead HNO3 features become clearly visible in the mid- to far-infrared. Lastly, assuming a few percent of CO2 in the atmosphere, CO2 absorption at 5.3 mu m becomes significant (for flare and nonflare cases), strongly overlapping with a flare related NO feature in Earth\u27s atmosphere
The stable climate of KELT-9b
Even among the most irradiated gas giants, so-called ultra-hot Jupiters, KELT-9b stands out as the hottest planet thus far discovered with a dayside temperature of over 4500 K. At these extreme irradiation levels, we expect an increase in heat redistribution efficiency and a low Bond albedo owed to an extended atmosphere with molecular hydrogen dissociation occurring on the planetary dayside. We present new photometric observations of the KELT-9 system throughout 4 full orbits and 9 separate occultations obtained by the 30 cm space telescope CHEOPS. The CHEOPS bandpass, located at optical wavelengths, captures the peak of the thermal emission spectrum of KELT-9b. In this work we simultaneously analyse CHEOPS phase curves along with public phase curves from TESS and Spitzer to infer joint constraints on the phase curve variation, gravity-darkened transits, and occultation depth in three bandpasses, as well as derive 2D temperature maps of the atmosphere at three different depths. We find a day-night heat redistribution efficiency of ~0.3 which confirms expectations of enhanced energy transfer to the planetary nightside due to dissociation and recombination of molecular hydrogen. We also calculate a Bond albedo consistent with zero. We find no evidence of variability of the brightness temperature of the planet, excluding variability greater than 1
The unstable CO2 feedback cycle on ocean planets
Ocean planets are volatile-rich planets, not present in our Solar system, which are thought to be dominated by deep, global oceans. This results in the formation of high-pressure water ice, separating the planetary crust from the liquid ocean and, thus, also from the atmosphere. Therefore, instead of a carbonate-silicate cycle like on the Earth, the atmospheric carbon dioxide concentration is governed by the capability of the ocean to dissolve carbon dioxide (CO2). In our study, we focus on the CO2 cycle between the atmosphere and the ocean which determines the atmospheric CO2 content. The atmospheric amount of CO2 is a fundamental quantity for assessing the potential habitability of the planet's surface because of its strong greenhouse effect, which determines the planetary surface temperature to a large degree. In contrast to the stabilizing carbonate-silicate cycle regulating the long-term CO2 inventory of the Earth atmosphere, we find that the CO2 cycle feedback on ocean planets is negative and has strong destabilizing effects on the planetary climate. By using a chemistry model for oceanic CO2 dissolution and an atmospheric model for exoplanets, we show that the CO2 feedback cycle can severely limit the extension of the habitable zone for ocean planet
Glial Activation Markers in CSF and Serum From Patients With Primary Progressive Multiple Sclerosis: Potential of Serum GFAP as Disease Severity Marker?
Background: In progressive multiple sclerosis (MS), glial activation is thought to be a relevant mechanism of disability progression. Therefore, in vivo assessment of the glial cell activity is, in the emerging treatment era of primary progressive MS (PPMS), more important than ever.
Objectives: To test the association of cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) and serum markers of glial activation in PPMS patients;including glial fibrillary acidic protein (GFAP), chitinase-3-like protein 1 (CHI3L1), soluble variant of triggering receptor expressed on myeloid cells 2 (sTREM2), and marker of neuroaxonal damage (Neurofilament light chain, NfL) as well as clinical severity.
Methods: CSF and serum samples from PPMS patients were collected in the MS-centers at Universities of Freiburg (n = 49), Ulm (n = 27), Muenster (n = 11), and Rostock (n = 6). sTREM2 and CHI3L1 levels were measured using the previously reported ELISA assays, while NfL and GFAP were measured using SIMOA assays. Clinical data included age, gender, disease duration, treatment status, and Expanded Disability Status Scale (EDSS).
Results: 93 CSF samples and 71 matching serum samples were analyzed. The median age of patients was 49 years and disease duration 4.5 years. GFAP(serum) correlated with EDSS after correction for age (beta = 0.3, p = 0.001). Furthermore, EDSS was higher in patients with a GFAP(serum) level >= 151.7 pg/ml compared to patients with GFAP(serum) below this cut-off (5.5 vs. 4.0, p = 0.009). Other markers did not correlate with the clinical severity. Moreover, we found a correlation between NfL(CSF) and GFAP(CSF), sTREM2 and CHI3L1 (rho = 0.4 for GFAP(CSF) and sTREM2, rho = 0.3 for CHI3L1, p < 0.01 for sTREM2 and CHI3L1 and <0.001 for GFAP(CSF)). CHI3L1 did not correlate with GFAP(CSF) but with sTREM2 (rho = 0.4, p < 0.01).
Discussion: The correlation between the glial activation markers in CSF with the markers of neuroaxonal demise supports the notion of the glial involvement in PPMS. The positive correlation between GFAP(CSF) with disease duration and GFAP(serum) with the clinical severity of the disease may highlight a particular role of the astrocytes in PPMS and mark the potential of GFAPserum as a disease severity marker
EXPORT: optical photometry and polarimetry of Vega-type and pre-main sequence stars
This paper presents optical UBVRI broadband photo-polarimetry of the EXPORT
sample obtained at the 2.5m Nordic Optical Telescope. The database consists of
multi-epoch photo-polarimetry of 68 pre-main-sequence and main-sequence stars.
An investigation of the polarization variability indicates that 22 objects are
variable at the 3sigma level in our data. All these objects are pre-main
sequence stars, consisting of both T Tauri and Herbig Ae/Be objects while the
main sequence, Vega type and post-T Tauri type objects are not variable. The
polarization properties of the variable sources are mostly indicative of the
UXOR-type behaviour; the objects show highest polarization when the brightness
is at minimum. We add seven new objects to the class of UXOR variables (BH Cep,
VX Cas, DK Tau, HK Ori, LkHa 234, KK Oph and RY Ori). The main reason for their
discovery is the fact that our data-set is the largest in its kind, indicating
that many more young UXOR-type pre-main sequence stars remain to be discovered.
The set of Vega-like systems has been investigated for the presence of
intrinsic polarization. As they lack variability, this was done using indirect
methods, and apart from the known case of BD +31.643, the following stars were
found to be strong candidates to exhibit polarization due to the presence of
circumstellar disks: 51 Oph, BD +31.643C, HD 58647 and HD 233517.Comment: A&A accepte
