Terahertz Magneto Optical Polarization Modulation Spectroscopy
We report the development of new terahertz techniques for rapidly measuring
the complex Faraday angle in systems with broken time-reversal symmetry using
the cyclotron resonance of a GaAs two-dimensional electron gas in a magnetic
field as a system for demonstration of performance. We have made polarization
modulation, high sensitivity (< 1 mrad) narrow band rotation measurements with
a CW optically pumped molecular gas laser, and by combining the distinct
advantages of terahertz (THz) time domain spectroscopy and polarization
modulation techniques, we have demonstrated rapid broadband rotation

Impaired nuclear import and viral incorporation of Vpr derived from a HIV long-term non-progressor
We previously reported an epidemiologically linked HIV-1 infected patient cohort in which a long-term non-progressor (LTNP) infected two recipients who then exhibited normal disease progression. Expression of patient-derived vpr sequences from each of the three cohort members in mammalian cells tagged with GFP revealed a significant reduction in Vpr nuclear import and virion incorporation uniquely from the LTNP, whereas Vpr from the two progressing recipients displayed normal localisation and virion incorporation, implying a link between efficient Vpr nuclear import and HIV disease progression. Importantly, an F72L point mutation in the LTNP was identified for the first time as being uniquely responsible for decreased Vpr nuclear import
Reasoning with comparative moral judgements: an argument for Moral Bayesianism
The paper discusses the notion of reasoning with comparative moral judgements
(i.e judgements of the form “act a is morally superior to act b”) from the point of view of several meta-ethical positions. Using a simple formal result, it is argued that only a version of moral cognitivism that is committed to the claim that moral beliefs come in degrees can give a normatively plausible account of such reasoning. Some implications of accepting such a version of moral cognitivism are discussed
Diffractive Phenomena and Shadowing in Deep-Inelastic Scattering
Shadowing effects in deep-inelastic lepton-nucleus scattering probe the mass
spectrum of diffractive leptoproduction from individual nucleons. We explore
this relationship using current experimental information on both processes. In
recent data from the NMC and E665 collaboration, taken at small x << 0.1 and
Q^2 < 1 GeV^2, shadowing is dominated by the diffractive excitation and
coherent interaction of low mass vector mesons. If shadowing is explored at
small x > 1 GeV^2 as discussed at HERA, the situation is
different. Here dominant contributions come from the coherent interaction of
diffractively produced heavy mass states. Furthermore we observe that the
energy dependence of shadowing is directly related to the mass dependence of
the diffractive production cross section for free nucleon targets.Comment: 12 pages Latex, 8 figure
Pions in isospin asymmetric nuclei
Using a pair of the lightest mirror nuclei, He and H, we study the
effect of the medium modification of pion fields on the flavor non-singlet
structure function. The change of the pion fields leads to an enhancement of
the flavor asymmetry of the antiquark distributions in a nucleus.Comment: 14 pages (4 figures
Nuclear Shadowing in DIS: Numerical Solution of the Evolution Equation for the Green Function
Within a light-cone QCD formalism based on the Green function technique
incorporating color transparency and coherence length effects we study nuclear
shadowing in deep-inelastic scattering at moderately small Bjorken x_{Bj}.
Calculations performed so far were based only on approximations leading to an
analytical harmonic oscillatory form of the Green function. We present for the
first time an exact numerical solution of the evolution equation for the Green
function using realistic form of the dipole cross section and nuclear density
function. We compare numerical results for nuclear shadowing with previous

Nuclear shadowing at low Q^2
We re-examine the role of vector meson dominance in nuclear shadowing at low
Q^2. We find that models which incorporate both vector meson and partonic
mechanisms are consistent with both the magnitude and the Q^2 slope of the

Nuclear shadowing in polarized DIS on ^6LiD at small x and its effect on the extraction of the deuteron spin structure function g_{1}^{d}(x,Q^2)
We consider the effect of nuclear shadowing in polarized deep inelastic
scattering (DIS) on ^6LiD at small Bjorken x and its relevance to the
extraction of the deuteron spin structure function g_{1}^{d}(x,Q^2). Using
models, which describe nuclear shadowing in unpolarized DIS, we demonstrate
that the nuclear shadowing correction to g_{1}^{d}(x,Q^2) is significant.Comment: 17 pages, 2 figure
Shadowing in the nuclear photoabsorption above the resonance region
A model based on the hadronic fluctuations of the real photon is developed to
describe the total photonucleon and photonuclear cross sections in the energy
region above the nucleon resonances. The hadronic spectral function of the
photon is derived including the finite width of vector-meson resonances and the
quark-antiquark continuum. The shadowing effect is evaluated considering the
effective interaction of the hadronic component with the bound nucleons within
a Glauber-Gribov multiple scattering theory. The low energy onset of the
shadowing effect is interpreted as a possible signature of a modification of
the hadronic spectral function in the nuclear medium. A decrease of the
-meson mass in nuclei is suggested for a better explanation of the
