Early Recognition of Human Activities from First-Person Videos Using Onset Representations
In this paper, we propose a methodology for early recognition of human
activities from videos taken with a first-person viewpoint. Early recognition,
which is also known as activity prediction, is an ability to infer an ongoing
activity at its early stage. We present an algorithm to perform recognition of
activities targeted at the camera from streaming videos, making the system to
predict intended activities of the interacting person and avoid harmful events
before they actually happen. We introduce the novel concept of 'onset' that
efficiently summarizes pre-activity observations, and design an approach to
consider event history in addition to ongoing video observation for early
first-person recognition of activities. We propose to represent onset using
cascade histograms of time series gradients, and we describe a novel
algorithmic setup to take advantage of onset for early recognition of
activities. The experimental results clearly illustrate that the proposed
concept of onset enables better/earlier recognition of human activities from
first-person videos
Verbal abuse in married versus non-married couples: the relationship between perception of acceptability and experience
Verbal abuse can lead to physical abuse if it is not recognized, or is tolerated in one\u27s partner. Participant\u27s perception of the acceptability of verbal abuse (PAVA) was compared to the level of verbal abuse in their own relationship (Conflict Tactics Scales-II). PAVA had a weak positive relationship with the actual occurrence of verbal abuse. PAVA and levels of verbal abuse were highest in very new and more established relationships regardless of relationship status. Males were more accepting of verbal abuse, and reported it less in their relationships. Finally, African American, Hispanic American and Asian American participants reported lower levels of verbal abuse in their relationships. These findings illustrate the complex relationship between the perception and experience of verbal abuse and suggest the need for additional research

TEXTURE ANALYSIS OF QUARTZITE BY WHOLE PATTERN DECONVOLUTION
The recently developed RITA concept combines algorithms of the Rietveld structure analysis with those from modern texture analysis in order to get texture information from d-spacing diffraction spectra. It is demonstrated for a low symmetry material (quartz) and a minimum pole sphere covering by the measured spectra. The quality of the results underlines the efficiency of this new approach especially for time-of-flight neutron diffraction studies where access to the beam is limited. New interesting aspects for crystal structure refinement are discussed
