    Spin-Orbit and Tensor Forces in Heavy-quark Light-quark Mesons: Implications of the New Ds state at 2.32 GeV

    We consider the spectroscopy of heavy-quark light-quark mesons with a simple model based on the non-relativistic reduction of vector and scalar exchange between fermions. Four forces are induced: the spin-orbit forces on the light and heavy quark spins, the tensor force, and a spin-spin force. If the vector force is Coulombic, the spin-spin force is a contact interaction, and the tensor force and spin-orbit force on the heavy quark to order 1/m1m21/m_1m_2 are directly proportional. As a result, just two independent parameters characterize these perturbations. The measurement of the masses of three p-wave states suffices to predict the mass of the fourth. This technique is applied to the DsD_s system, where the newly discovered state at 2.32 GeV provides the third measured level, and to the DD system. The mixing of the two JP=1+J^P=1^+ p-wave states is reflected in their widths and provides additional constraints. The resulting picture is at odds with previous expectations and raises new puzzles.Comment: 6 pages, 1 figur

    Prospects for detection of ΄(1D)→΄(1S)ππ\Upsilon(1D) \to \Upsilon(1S) \pi \pi via ΄(3S)→΄(1D)+X\Upsilon(3S) \to \Upsilon(1D) + X

    At least one state in the first family of D-wave bbˉb \bar b quarkonium levels has been discovered near the predicted mass of 10.16 GeV/c2c^2. This state is probably the one with J=2. This state and the ones with J=1 and J=3 may contribute a detectable amount to the decay ΄(1D)→΄(1S)ππ\Upsilon(1D) \to \Upsilon(1S) \pi \pi, depending on the partial widths for these decays for which predictions vary considerably.     Energy bands, conductance and thermoelectric power for ballistic electrons in a nanowire with spin-orbit interaction

    We calculated the effects of spin-orbit interaction (SOI) on the energy bands, ballistic conductance and the electron-diffusion thermoelectric power of a nanowire by varying the temperature, electron density and width of the wire. The potential barriers at the edges of the wire are assumed to be very high. A consequence of the boundary conditions used in this model is determined by the energy band structure, resulting in wider plateaus when the electron density is increased due to larger energy-level separation as the higher subbands are occupied by electrons. The nonlinear dependence of the transverse confinement on position with respect to the well center excludes the "pole-like feature" in the conductance which is obtained when a harmonic potential is employed for confinement. At low temperature, the electron diffusion thermoelectric power increases linearly with T but deviates from the linear behavior for large values of T.Comment: Updated corrected version of the original submissio

    Implementing the PIE (Person, Interaction and Environment) programme to improve person-centred care for people with dementia admitted to hospital wards: a qualitative evaluation

    Background Improving person-centred care for people with dementia in hospitals is a UK policy priority. The PIE (Person, Interaction, Environment) programme comprises cycles of observations of care by staff, identification of areas for improvement and plans for practice change and evaluation. The aim of the research reported here was to describe and evaluate PIE implementation in three UK NHS regions. Methods A qualitative design was adopted in ten case study sites (wards). Site selection was based on readiness for change criteria. Following a training workshop, PIE cycles were introduced into each ward. Data collection comprised observation, interviews, documentary analysis and an events log. Normalisation Process Theory provided a guiding framework for analysis. Results PIE was fully adopted in two study wards over 18 months, which resulted in sustained practice change and increased awareness of person-centredness. Partial implementation of PIE took place in a further two wards but progress stalled before significant action. The remaining six wards failed to implement PIE. Factors influencing implementation were: salience of PIE, collective team involvement, fit with strategic priorities, adequate resources, effective clinical leadership, good facilitation and organisational stability. Conclusions PIE has the potential to help staff improve person-centred care for people with dementia admitted to hospital wards. However, the evidence is limited to ten wards of which only two fully implemented the programme. Implications for practice ‱ A programme for improving person-centred care for people with dementia in acute hospital wards requires sustained commitment from both the organisation and the ward. ‱ Successful practice change depends on multiple key factors, including effective clinical leadership and good facilitation. ‱ Contextual factors at various levels of an organisation need to be considered. ‱ Use of the PIE tool has the potential to enable staff’s attention to focus on person centred care for older people with dementia in acute settings

    A ‘duality’ is a formal mapping between the spaces of solutions of two empirically equivalent theories. In recent times, dualities have been found to be pervasive in string theory and quantum field theory. Naïvely interpreted, duality-related theories appear to make very different ontological claims about the world—differing in e.g. space-time structure, fundamental ontology, and mereological structure. In light of this, duality-related theories raise questions familiar from discussions of underdetermination in the philosophy of science: in the presence of dual theories, what is one to say about the ontology of the world? In this paper, we undertake a comprehensive and non-technical survey of the landscape of possible ontological interpretations of duality-related theories. We provide a significantly enriched and clarified taxonomy of options—several of which are novel to the literature
