Graphite Nanoeraser
We present here a method for cleaning intermediate-size (5~50nm)
contamination from highly oriented pyrolytic graphite. Electron beam deposition
causes a continuous increase of carbonaceous material on graphene and graphite
surfaces, which is difficult to remove by conventional techniques. Direct
mechanical wiping using a graphite nanoeraser is observed to drastically reduce
the amount of contamination. After the mechanical removal of contamination, the
graphite surfaces were able to self-retract after shearing, indicating that van
der Waals contact bonding is restored. Since contact bonding provides an
indication of a level of cleanliness normally only attainable in a high-quality
clean-room, we discuss potential applications in preparation of ultraclean
surfaces.Comment: 10 pages, two figure
Entanglement between a diamond spin qubit and a photonic time-bin qubit at telecom wavelength
We report on the realization and verification of quantum entanglement between
an NV electron spin qubit and a telecom-band photonic qubit. First we generate
entanglement between the spin qubit and a 637 nm photonic time-bin qubit,
followed by photonic quantum frequency conversion that transfers the
entanglement to a 1588 nm photon. We characterize the resulting state by
correlation measurements in different bases and find a lower bound to the Bell
state fidelity of F = 0.77 +/- 0.03. This result presents an important step
towards extending quantum networks via optical fiber infrastructure
Dynamical study of the light scalar mesons below 1 GeV in a flux-tube model
The light scalar mesons below 1 GeV as tetraquark states are studied in the
framework of the flux-tube model, the multi-body confinement instead of the
additive two-body confinement is used. From the calculated results, we find
that the light scalar mesons, , could be well accommodated in
the diquark-antidiquark tetraquark picture in the flux-tube model and they
could be color confinement resonances. The mass of the first radial excited
state of is 1019 MeV, which is close to the mass of
. Whereas can not be fitted in this interpretation.Comment: 11 pages, 1 figur
Oil palm waste: An abundant and promising feedstock for microwave pyrolysis conversion into good quality biochar with potential multi-applications
Oil palm waste (OPW), comprising mainly of empty fruit bunch, mesocarp fiber, frond, trunk, and palm kernel shell generated from palm oil industry, was collected, characterized, and then pyrolyzed to evaluate their potential to be converted into biochar with desirable properties for use in multi-applications. The OPW was detected to have considerable amounts of carbon (43–51 wt%) and fixed carbon (30–39 wt%), showing potential to be converted into carbon-rich biochar. Microwave pyrolysis of palm kernel shell as the selected OPW produced a biochar with zero sulphur content and high heating value (23–26 MJ/kg) that is nearly comparable to conventional coal, thus indicating its potential as an eco-friendly solid fuel. The biochar obtained was also showed low moisture (<3 wt%) and ash (3 wt%), and a highly porous structure with high BET surface area (210 m2/g), indicating the presence of many adsorption sites and thus showing desirable characteristics for potential use as pollutant adsorbent in wastewater treatment, or bio-fertilizer to absorb nutrient and promote plant growth. Our results demonstrate that OPW is a biowaste that shows exceptional promise to be transformed into high-grade biochar rather than simply disposed by landfilling or burned as low-grade fuel in boiler
Complications of Bezoar in Children: What Is New?
A bezoar is a mass found trapped in the gastrointestinal system. The condition may be associated with pica, especially in developmentally retarded children. Clinical manifestations are usually nonspecific. Endoscopic diagnosis and removal of the foreign materials is often indicated. Occasionally, severe complications may occur. We report two cases to illustrate the clinical features and complications in these children. In the first case, a reliable history was not obtained in the developmentally delayed girl which precluded prompt diagnosis, but the grossly dilated stomach on plain abdominal radiograph gave clues to an underlying insidious mechanical obstruction of upper gastrointestinal tract. In the second case of a normal child, the unrelenting symptoms and weight loss prompt further investigations which revealed the diagnosis. Literature on pediatric bezoar is reviewed. Oesophagoduodenoscopy is the investigation of choice for diagnostic confirmation, but surgical facilities must be available to deal with acute complications
Quasiparticle interfacial level alignment of highly hybridized frontier levels: HO on TiO(110)
Knowledge of the frontier levels' alignment prior to photo-irradiation is
necessary to achieve a complete quantitative description of HO
photocatalysis on TiO(110). Although HO on rutile TiO(110) has been
thoroughly studied both experimentally and theoretically, a quantitative value
for the energy of the highest HO occupied levels is still lacking. For
experiment, this is due to the HO levels being obscured by hybridization
with TiO(110) levels in the difference spectra obtained via ultraviolet
photoemission spectroscopy (UPS). For theory, this is due to inherent
difficulties in properly describing many-body effects at the
HO-TiO(110) interface. Using the projected density of states (DOS) from
state-of-the-art quasiparticle (QP) , we disentangle the adsorbate and
surface contributions to the complex UPS spectra of HO on TiO(110). We
perform this separation as a function of HO coverage and dissociation on
stoichiometric and reduced surfaces. Due to hybridization with the TiO(110)
surface, the HO 3a and 1b levels are broadened into several peaks
between 5 and 1 eV below the TiO(110) valence band maximum (VBM). These
peaks have both intermolecular and interfacial bonding and antibonding
character. We find the highest occupied levels of HO adsorbed intact and
dissociated on stoichiometric TiO(110) are 1.1 and 0.9 eV below the VBM. We
also find a similar energy of 1.1 eV for the highest occupied levels of HO
when adsorbed dissociatively on a bridging O vacancy of the reduced surface. In
both cases, these energies are significantly higher (by 0.6 to 2.6 eV) than
those estimated from UPS difference spectra, which are inconclusive in this
energy region. Finally, we apply self-consistent QP (scQP1) to obtain
the ionization potential of the HO-TiO(110) interface.Comment: 12 pages, 12 figures, 1 tabl
COMRADES determines in vivo RNA structures and interactions.
The structural flexibility of RNA underlies fundamental biological processes, but there are no methods for exploring the multiple conformations adopted by RNAs in vivo. We developed cross-linking of matched RNAs and deep sequencing (COMRADES) for in-depth RNA conformation capture, and a pipeline for the retrieval of RNA structural ensembles. Using COMRADES, we determined the architecture of the Zika virus RNA genome inside cells, and identified multiple site-specific interactions with human noncoding RNAs.This work was supported by Cancer Research UK (C13474/A18583, C6946/A14492) and the Wellcome Trust (104640/Z/14/Z, 092096/Z/10/Z) to E.A.M. Spontaneous Inter-layer Coherence in Double-Layer Quantum-Hall Systems I: Charged Vortices and Kosterlitz-Thouless Phase Transitions
At strong magnetic fields double-layer two-dimensional-electron-gas systems
can form an unusual broken symmetry state with spontaneous inter-layer phase
coherence. In this paper we explore the rich variety of quantum and
finite-temperature phase transitions associated with this broken symmetry. We
describe the system using a pseudospin language in which the layer
degree-of-freedom is mapped to a fictional spin 1/2 degree-of-freedom. With
this mapping the spontaneous symmetry breaking is equivalent to that of a spin
1/2 easy-plane ferromagnet. In this language spin-textures can carry a charge.
In particular, vortices carry e/2 electrical charge and vortex-antivortex pairs
can be neutral or carry charge e. We derive an effective low-energy action and
use it to discuss the charged and collective neutral excitations of the system.
We have obtained the parameters of the Landau-Ginzburg functional from
first-principles estimates and from finite-size exact diagonalization studies.
We use these results to estimate the dependence of the critical temperature for
the Kosterlitz-Thouless phase transition on layer separation.Comment: 56 pages, 19 figures available upon request at

Diagnostic Value of EBUS-TBNA for Lung Cancer with Non-Enlarged Lymph Nodes: A Study in a Tuberculosis-Endemic Country
BACKGROUND: In tuberculosis (TB)-endemic areas, contrast-enhanced computed tomography (CT) and positron emission tomography (PET) findings of lung cancer patients with non-enlarged lymph nodes are frequently discrepant. Endobronchial ultrasound-guided transbronchial aspiration (EBUS-TBNA) enables real-time nodal sampling, and thereby improves nodal diagnosis accuracy. This study aimed to compare the accuracy of nodal diagnosis by using EBUS-TBNA, and PET. METHODS: We studied 43 lung cancer patients with CT-defined non-enlarged mediastinal and hilar lymph nodes and examined 78 lymph nodes using EBUS-TBNA. RESULTS: The sensitivity, specificity, positive predictive value, and negative predictive value of EBUS-TBNA were 80.6%, 100%, 100%, and 85.7%, respectively. PET had low specificity (18.9%) and a low positive predictive value (44.4%). The diagnostic accuracy of EBUS-TBNA was higher than that of PET (91% vs. 47.4%; p<0.001). Compared to CT-based nodal assessment, PET yielded a positive diagnostic impact in 36.9% nodes, a negative diagnostic impact in 46.2% nodes, and no diagnostic impact in 16.9% nodes. Patients with lymph nodes showing negative PET diagnostic impact had a high incidence of previous pulmonary TB. Multivariate analysis indicated that detection of hilar nodes on PET was an independent predictor of negative diagnostic impact of PET. CONCLUSION: In a TB-endemic area with a condition of CT-defined non-enlarged lymph node, the negative diagnostic impact of PET limits its clinical usefulness for nodal staging; therefore, EBUS-TBNA, which facilitates direct diagnosis, is preferred
