    Integrating Traditional and Scientific Knowledge through Collaborative Natural Science Field Research: Identifying Elements for Success

    We discuss two recent projects to examine the role of collaborative environmental fieldwork both in research and in the interactions between academically trained researchers and experienced local residents. The Bidarki Project studied black leather chitons (Katharina tunicata) in the lower Kenai Peninsula, Alaska. Its conclusion that chiton declines are part of a serial decline of intertidal invertebrates drew on collaborative fieldwork, archaeological data, historical records, and interviews with local residents. The Siku-Inuit-Hila Project studied sea ice in Barrow, Alaska; Clyde River, Nunavut; and Qaanaaq, Greenland. Quantitative data from locally maintained observation sites were supplemented by knowledge exchanges among hunters from the communities and by discussion in local working groups to develop an understanding of the physical dynamics and human uses of sea ice at each locale. We conclude that careful planning and preparation, along with the effort to build strong personal relationships, can increase the likelihood that collaborative fieldwork will be productive, enjoyable, and rewarding.Nous discutons de deux récents projets ayant eu pour but d’examiner le rôle d’études environnementales collaboratives sur le terrain, tant sur le plan de la recherche que sur le plan des interactions entre les chercheurs universitaires et les résidents expérimentés des localités visées. Le projet Bidarki se penchait sur les chitons noirs (Katharina tunicata) de la basse péninsule Kenai, en Alaska. La conclusion selon laquelle le déclin des chitons fait partie d’un déclin en série d’invertébrés intertidaux s’appuie sur des études collaboratives sur le terrain, sur des données archéologiques, sur des dossiers historiques ainsi que sur des entrevues de résidents des localités. Pour sa part, le projet Siku-Inuit-Hila a eu comme objectif d’étudier la glace de mer à Barrow, en Alaska; à Clyde River, au Nunavut; et à Qaanaaq, au Groenland. Les données quantitatives provenant de lieux d’observation entretenus localement ont été supplémentées par les échanges de connaissances des chasseurs des collectivités et par les discussions de groupes de travail locaux visant à mieux comprendre la dynamique physique et l’utilisation humaine de la glace de mer à chaque endroit. Nous en concluons que des travaux de planification et de préparation attentionnés, accompagnés d’efforts visant à nouer des liens personnels étroits, peuvent accroître la possibilité que les études collaboratives sur le terrain soient productives, agréables et valorisantes

    Noiseless signal amplification using positive electro-optic feedforward

    We propose an electro-optic feedforward scheme which can in principle produce perfect noiseless signal amplification (signal transfer coefficient of T s = 1). We demonstrate the scheme experimentally and report, for a signal gain of 13.4 dB, a signal transfer coefficient of T s = 0.88 which is limited mainly by detector efficiencies (92%). The result clearly exceeds the standard quantum limit, T s = 0.5, set by the high gain limit of a phase insensitive linear amplifier. We use the scheme to amplify a small signal carried by 35% amplitude squeezed light and demonstrate that, unlike the fragile squeezed input, the signal amplified output is robust to propagation losses

    Adesogan et al. (2004), has demonstrated that ensiled pea wheat intercrops can reduce the amount of concentrate fed to dairy cows by 50% without affecting milk yield or composition. A limitation of forage peas for high yielding dairy cows is the low by-pass protein content, but it has been suggested by Broderick (1995), that feeding forages that contain low levels of condensed tannin can improve nitrogen utilisation.     Observations on Shorefast Ice Dynamics in Arctic Alaska and the Responses of the Iñupiat Hunting Community

    Although shorefast sea ice forms a platform that facilitates travel, camping, and hunting by Iñupiat subsistence hunters and fishers in the western Arctic, the nearshore sea-ice zone remains an unforgiving and dynamic environment. Traditional hunters constantly hone site-specific experiences and skills with which to optimize the reward-to-risk ratio inherent in operating from this coastal ice. Nearshore ice conditions nevertheless can change suddenly, endangering even the most experienced subsistence hunters. This study examines two (of several) 20th-century events, 40 years apart, in which shorefast ice failed, threatening Iñupiat whale hunters with loss of confidence, livelihood, and life. These events differed in character. In one event, the shorefast ice was "crushed" by moving ice floes. In the other, the shorefast ice broke free of land. Our examination focuses on the relationship of subsistence hunters to the ice, the environmental causes of ice failures, the evolving technology for predicting ice behavior, and the longer-term implications of global change for this system. The complexity of geophysical processes underlying coastal ice behavior makes ice failures unpredictable. Thus, hunters must assume and manage risk. The variable and uncertain environment to which whale hunters are accustomed has produced an inherent flexibility that has helped them adapt to new conditions and will continue to do so in the future.Bien que la banquise côtière constitue une plate-forme qui permet aux Iñupiat de l'Arctique de l'Ouest de se déplacer et de camper lorsqu'ils pratiquent la chasse et la pêche de subsistance, la zone de banquise proche du littoral reste un milieu dynamique qui ne pardonne pas. Les chasseurs traditionnels améliorent constamment les habiletés et l'expérience reliées à des sites particuliers, qui leur permettent d'optimiser le rapport récompense-risque inhérent au fait de travailler depuis la glace côtière. Les conditions de cette dernière peuvent toutefois changer brusquement, mettant en danger même les chasseurs de subsistance les plus chevronnés. Cette étude se penche sur deux (parmi plusieurs) épisodes survenus au XXe siècle, à 40 ans d'écart, durant lesquels la banquise côtière s'est rompue, ébranlant la confiance des baleiniers Iñupiat et menaçant leur moyen de subsistance ainsi que leur vie. Ces événements étaient de nature différente. Dans l'un, la glace côtière avait été «écrasée» par des floes en dérive. Dans l'autre, la banquise côtière s'était détachée de la terre ferme. Notre étude se concentre sur le rapport entre les chasseurs de subsistance et la glace, les causes environnementales de la fragilisation de la glace, la technologie mise au point actuellement qui permettrait de prédire le comportement de la glace, et les implications à long terme du changement climatique pour ce système. La complexité des processus géophysiques sous-jacents au comportement de la banquise côtière fait que les ruptures de la banquise sont imprévisibles. Les chasseurs doivent donc assumer le risque et le gérer. L'environnement variable et incertain auquel sont accoutumés les chasseurs de baleine leur a donné une souplesse inhérente qui les a aidés à s'adapter à de nouvelles conditions et continuera de le faire dans l'avenir

    Experimental Demonstration of Frequency Autolocking an Optical Cavity Using a Time-Varying Kalman Filter

    We propose and demonstrate a new autolocking scheme using a three-mirror ring cavity consisting of a linear quadratic regulator and a time-varying Kalman filter. Our technique does not require a frequency scan to acquire resonance. We utilize the singular perturbation method to simplify our system dynamics and to permit the application of linear control techniques. The error signal combined with the transmitted power is used to estimate the cavity detuning. This estimate is used by a linear time-varying Kalman filter which enables the implementation of an optimal controller. The experimental results validate the controller design, and we demonstrate improved robustness to disturbances and a faster locking time than a traditional proportional-integral controller. More important, the time-varying Kalman filtering approach automatically reacquires lock for large detunings, where the error signal leaves its linear capture range, a feat which linear time-invariant controllers cannot achieve. © 2016 American Physical Society

    A fractal-based fibre for ultra-high throughput optical probes

    A core component of all scanning near-field optical microscopy (SNOM) systems is the optical probe, which has evolved greatly but still represents the limiting component for the system. Here, we introduce a new type of optical probe, based on a Fractal Fibre which is a special class of photonic crystal fibre (PCF), to directly address the issue of increasing the optical throughput in SNOM probes. Optical measurements through the Fractal Fibre probes have shown superior power levels to that of conventional SNOM probes. The results presented in this paper suggest that a novel fibre design is critical in order to maximize the potential of the SNOM

    A Bright Spatially-Coherent Compact X-ray Synchrotron Source

    Each successive generation of x-ray machines has opened up new frontiers in science, such as the first radiographs and the determination of the structure of DNA. State-of-the-art x-ray sources can now produce coherent high brightness keV x-rays and promise a new revolution in imaging complex systems on nanometre and femtosecond scales. Despite the demand, only a few dedicated synchrotron facilities exist worldwide, partially due the size and cost of conventional (accelerator) technology. Here we demonstrate the use of a recently developed compact laser-plasma accelerator to produce a well-collimated, spatially-coherent, intrinsically ultrafast source of hard x-rays. This method reduces the size of the synchrotron source from the tens of metres to centimetre scale, accelerating and wiggling a high electron charge simultaneously. This leads to a narrow-energy spread electron beam and x-ray source that is >1000 times brighter than previously reported plasma wiggler and thus has the potential to facilitate a myriad of uses across the whole spectrum of light-source applications.Comment: 5 pages, 4 figure
