We review recent results on all-optical regeneration of phase encoded signals based on phase sensitive amplification achieved by avoiding phase-to-amplitude conversion in order to facilitate the regeneration of amplitude/phase encoded (QAM) signals

Control of posture with FES systems

One of the major obstacles in restoration of functional FES supported standing in paraplegia is the lack of knowledge of a suitable control strategy. The main issue is how to integrate the purposeful actions of the non-paralysed upper body when interacting with the environment while standing, and the actions of the artificial FES control system supporting the paralyzed lower extremities. In this paper we provide a review of our approach to solving this question, which focuses on three inter-related areas: investigations of the basic mechanisms of functional postural responses in neurologically intact subjects; re-training of the residual sensory-motor activities of the upper body in paralyzed individuals; and development of closed-loop FES control systems for support of the paralyzed joints

Disorder-enhanced phase coherence in trapped bosons on optical lattices

The consequences of disorder on interacting bosons trapped in optical lattices are investigated by quantum Monte Carlo simulations. At small to moderate strengths of potential disorder a unique effect is observed: if there is a Mott plateau at the center of the trap in the clean limit, phase coherence {\it increases} as a result of disorder. The localization effects due to correlation and disorder compete against each other, resulting in a partial delocalization of the particles in the Mott region, which in turn leads to increased phase coherence. In the absence of a Mott plateau, this effect is absent. A detailed analysis of the uniform system without a trap shows that the disordered states participate in a Bose glass phase.Comment: 4 pages, 4 figure

Coherent dynamics of Bose-Einstein condensates in high-finesse optical cavities

We study the mutual interaction of a Bose-Einstein condensed gas with a single mode of a high-finesse optical cavity. We show how the cavity transmission reflects condensate properties and calculate the self-consistent intra-cavity light field and condensate evolution. Solving the coupled condensate-cavity equations we find that while falling through the cavity, the condensate is adiabatically transfered into the ground state of the periodic optical potential. This allows time dependent non-destructive measurements on Bose-Einstein condensates with intriguing prospects for subsequent controlled manipulation.Comment: 5 pages, 5 figures; revised version: added reference

Quantum phases of electric dipole ensembles in atom chips

We present how a phase factor is generated when an electric dipole moves along a closed trajectory inside a magnetic field gradient. The similarity of this situation with charged particles in a magnetic field can be employed to simulate condensed matter models, such as the quantum Hall effect and chiral spin Hamiltonians, with ultra cold atoms integrated on atom chips. To illustrate this we consider a triangular configuration of a two dimensional optical lattice, where the chiral spin Hamiltonian σiσj×σk\vec{\sigma}_i \cdot \vec{\sigma}_j \times \vec{\sigma}_k can be generated between any three neighbours on a lattice yielding an experimentally implementable chiral ground state.Comment: 4 pages, 2 figures, REVTEX. Practical guideline for trench reinstatements in the road reserve

Paper presented at the 33rd Annual Southern African Transport Conference 7-10 July 2014 "Leading Transport into the Future", CSIR International Convention Centre, Pretoria, South Africa.Trenches are regularly opened and reinstated in the road reserve by various utility companies. However, the knowledge of such utility companies regarding pavement materials and trench reinstatements can be inadequate. This paper has been written to assist the trench contractor and utility company in doing proper trench reinstatement in the road reserve. It is not suited to trench reinstatement in the road pavement. It synthesises road materials and construction knowledge and testing procedures to ensure trench reinstatement will meet end use and outcome requirements. Aspects such as soil and material knowledge, soil moisture estimation, compaction technique and measurement of bearing capacity have been re-packaged in plain English language to guide a non-road engineering person towards an acceptable and easily measurable outcome. Material description and moisture estimation are done using reliable visual description guidelines. Densification and bearing capacity achievement are guided without measuring actual density, but using instead the Dynamic Cone Penetrometer (DCP) or purpose developed Rapid Compaction Control Device (RCCD). A process and evaluation sheet is presented for quality control which is presented in a simplified format yet backed up by complex technical background information. This paper was transferred from the original CD ROM created for this conference. Bosons in Disordered Optical Potentials

In this work we systematically investigate the condensate properties, superfluid properties and quantum phase transitions in interacting Bose gases trapped in disordered optical potentials. We numerically solve the Bose-Hubbard Hamiltonian exactly for different: (a) types of disorder, (b) disorder strengths, and (c) interatomic interactions. The three types of disorder studied are: quasiperiodic disorder, uniform random disorder and random speckle-type disorder. We find that the Bose glass, as identified by Fisher et al [Phys. Rev. B {\bf 40}, 546 (1989)], contains a normal condensate component and we show how the three different factors listed above affect it.Comment: 4 pages, 4 figures (low res) v2 Title,Abstract,Introduction: changes; Figure 3: Add label to axi
