    Examining the socio-economic determinants of adoption of the 'Government Gateway' initiative in the UK

    This paper empirically examines the impact of socio-economic determinants upon the adoption of a recent UK e-government initiative, the 'Government Gateway'. The data on five socio-economic characteristics was collected employing a postal survey. The findings of this research suggest that the three variables of age, gender and occupation significantly differentiated the adopters from the non-adopters of the Government Gateway, whilst education and income were found to be non-significant. The implications of the findings are discussed in the context of promoting the adoption of emerging Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) and reducing the digital divide against less privileged parts of the population

    A Link-Level Simulator of the cdma2000 Reverse-Link Physical Layer.

    The cdma2000 system is an evolutionary enhancement of the IS-95 standards which support 3G services defined by the International Telecommunications Union (ITU). cdma2000 comes in two phases: 1XRTT and 3XRTT (1X and 3X indicates the number of 1.25 MHz wide radio carrier channels used and RTT stands for Radio Transmission Technology). The cdma2000 1XRTT, which operates within a 1.25 MHz bandwidth, can be utilized in existing IS-95 CDMA channels as it uses the same bandwidth, while 3XRTT requires the commitment of 5 MHz bandwidth to support higher data rates. This paper describes a software model implementation of the cdma2000 reverse link and its application for evaluating the effect of rake receiver design parameters on the system performance under various multipath fading conditions. The cdma2000 models were developed at the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST), using SPW (Signal Processing Worksystem) commercial software tools. The model has been developed in a generic manner that includes all the reverse link six radio configurations and their corresponding data rates, according to cdma2000 specifications. After briefly reviewing the traffic channel characteristics of the cdma2000 reverse link (subscriber to base station), the paper discusses the rake receiver implementation including an ideal rake receiver. It then evaluates the performance of each receiver for a Spreading Rate 3 (3XRTT) operation, which is considered as a true "3G" cdma2000 technology. These evaluations are based on the vehicular IMT-2000 (International Mobile Telecommunication 2000) channel model using the link budget defined in cdma2000 specifications for the reverse link

    Prevalence of Cryptosporidium spp. infection in renal transplant and hemodialysis patients

    Transplanted and hemodialysis patients are frequently affected by parasitic diseases such as cryptosporidiosis. Cryptosporidium is a parasite causing self-limited diarrhea and enteritis in healthy individuals. The presence of Cryptosporidium infection was studied in three groups including 87 renal transplant patients, 103 hemodialysis patients, and 60 healthy individuals as the control group. Two stool specimens were obtained from each case. The specimens were concentrated by the formalin-ether method and two smears were prepared from each. The smears were stained by modified acid-fast method and were observed under a light microscope. Ten (11.5) renal transplant and 4 (3.88) hemodialysis patients were positive for Cryptosporidium infection. No positive results were obtained in the control group. The results showed a statistically significant difference between renal transplant and control groups (P=0.02), but the difference between hemodialysis and control groups was not significant (P=0.2). The results also showed that the rate of Cryptosporidium infection in renal transplant patients was much higher than hemodialysis patients. The susceptibility of renal transplant patients to Cryptosporidium infection is much more than other studied groups and this could be due to immunosuppressive therapy in these patients

    Mechanical and structural evaluation of friction stir welded 6061 aluminium alloy lap joints at different welding speeds

    Lap joints of 6061-T6 aluminium alloy were produced by friction stir welding, and the influence of welding speed on their weld quality was investigated in terms of welding defects, micro- and macrostructures, hardness distribution, and tensile properties as well as effective plate thickness (EPT) by applying the welding speed in the range 20–60 mm min–1 at constant rotation speed of 1000 rpm. The results showed that although tensile shear strength, joint efficiency, and microhardness of the weld nugget zone (WNZ) rather than the heat affected zone (HAZ), and the EPT increased with an increase in welding speed, the average grain size in the WNZ rather than the HAZ decreased. Due to increasing welding speed, the hooking and thinning defects were gradually restricted from the WNZ to the WNZ/TMAZ interface. The fracture mode within the highest tensile shear strength joints was denoted as plate separation along the hook throughout the stir zone

    GaP-ZnS Multilayer Films:Visible-Light Photoelectrodes by Interface Engineering

    In the field of solar water splitting, searching for and modifying bulk compositions have been the conventional approaches to enhancing visible-light activity. In this work, manipulation of heterointerfaces in ZnS-GaP multilayer films is demonstrated as a successful alternative approach to achieving visible-light-active photoelectrodes. The photocurrent measured under visible light increases with the increasing number of interfaces for ZnS-GaP multilayer films with the same total thickness, indicating it to be a predominantly interface-driven effect. The activity extends to long wavelengths (650 nm), much longer than those expected for pure ZnS and also longer than those previously reported for GaP. Density functional theory calculations of ZnS-GaP multilayers predict the presence of electronic states associated with atoms at the interfaces between ZnS and GaP that are different from those found within the layers away from the interfaces; these states, formed due to unique bonding environments found at the interfaces, lead to a lowering of the band gap and hence the observed visible-light activity. The presence of these electronic states attributed to the interfaces is confirmed by depth-resolved X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. Thus, we show that interface engineering is a promising route for overcoming common deficiencies of individual bulk materials caused by both wide band gaps and indirect band gaps and hence enhancing visible-light absorption and photoelectrochemical performance

    Predicting Progression of IgA Nephropathy: New Clinical Progression Risk Score

    IgA nephropathy (IgAN) is a common cause of end-stage renal disease (ESRD) in Asia. In this study, based on a large cohort of Chinese patients with IgAN, we aim to identify independent predictive factors associated with disease progression to ESRD. We collected retrospective clinical data and renal outcomes on 619 biopsy-diagnosed IgAN patients with a mean follow-up time of 41.3 months. In total, 67 individuals reached the study endpoint defined by occurrence of ESRD necessitating renal replacement therapy. In the fully adjusted Cox proportional hazards model, there were four baseline variables with a significant independent effect on the risk of ESRD. These included: eGFR [HR = 0.96(0.95–0.97)], serum albumin [HR = 0.47(0.32–0.68)], hemoglobin [HR = 0.79(0.72–0.88)], and SBP [HR = 1.02(1.00–1.03)]. Based on these observations, we developed a 4-variable equation of a clinical risk score for disease progression. Our risk score explained nearly 22% of the total variance in the primary outcome. Survival ROC curves revealed that the risk score provided improved prediction of ESRD at 24th, 60th and 120th month of follow-up compared to the three previously proposed risk scores. In summary, our data indicate that IgAN patients with higher systolic blood pressure, lower eGFR, hemoglobin, and albumin levels at baseline are at a greatest risk of progression to ESRD. The new progression risk score calculated based on these four baseline variables offers a simple clinical tool for risk stratification
