    Pengukuran dan Pendugaan Erosi pada Lahan Perkebunan Kelapa Sawit dengan Kemiringan Berbeda

    This study aims to determine the amount of erosion in oil palm plantations in various slopes and determine the extent of erosion in oil palm plantations. This research was conducted in oil palm plantations PT. Chemical Tirta Utama, conducted over four months from December 2015 to March 2106. The study was conducted by two methods, namely the methods of measurement and prediction of erosion. Measurements of erosion are conducted by placing small plots in the area gawangan dead plant oil palm on land slope of 9%, 19% and 31%. Estimation of erosion performed using USLE method. The results showed that the amount of soil erosion in oil palm plantations using small plots highest on the slope of 9%, amounting to 5.38 tonnes / ha, whereas the lowest on slopes of 31% amounting to 2.83 tonnes / ha. For the method of soil erosion USLE highest on the slope 31% ie 431.98 tons / ha, whereas the lowest on the slope of 9% is 386.55 tons / ha. The degree of erosion in oil palm plantations by estimating method USLE at an inclination of 9%, 19% and 31%, respectively, are 11.64, 12.53 and 14.04 which are all included in the very high category. The level of erosion in oil palm plantations with small terraced plots measuring method at an inclination of 9%, 19% and 31%, respectively 0.16, 0.12 and 0.09 which are all included in the low category

    Development and validation of a UPLC method for quantification of antiviral agent, Acyclovir in lipid-based formulations

    AbstractPurposeThe objective of the current study is to evaluate the Ultra Performance Liquid Chromatography (UPLC) method for quantification of Acyclovir in lipid-based formulations.MethodA simple, rapid, reliable and precise reversed phase UPLC method has been developed and validated according to the regulatory guidelines, which composed of isocratic mobile phase; 0.25% formic acid (FA) in Milli-Q water with a flow rate of 0.5ml/min, and column BEH C18 (2.1×50mm, 1.7μm). The detection was carried out at 254nm.ResultsThe developed UPLC method was found to be rapid (1.2min run time), selective with well resoluted Acyclovir peak (0.89min) from different lipid matrices and sensitive (Limit of Detection (LOD) was 0.3ppm and Lower Limit of Quantification (LLOQ) was 1ppm). The accuracy and precision were determined and were perfectly matching with the standard FDA limits.ConclusionThe study showed that the proposed UPLC method can be used for the assessment of drug purity, stability, solubility and lipid-formulation release profile with no interference of excipients or related substances of active pharmaceutical ingredient

    Adherence to Medications among Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus Patients in Three Districts of Al Dakhliyah Governorate, Oman : A cross-sectional pilot study

    Objectives: This pilot study aimed to assess the medication adherence of type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) patients in three wilayats(districts) of the Al Dakhliyah governorate, Oman, and to identify the probable reasons for medication non-adherence. Methods: A cross-sectional questionnaire-based pilot survey was conducted among T2DM Omani patients between February and June 2012 to assess their medication adherence and the relationship between their socio-demographic characteristics and adherence levels. Results: A total of 158 patients participated in the survey. The majority of the participants were unemployed or were housewives (66.5%). Forgetfulness was the most frequent reason for medication non-adherence (36.4%). Participants demonstrated an excellent level of adherence to their medicines (median total score = 3). No significant difference in median total adherence scores was observed based on the evaluated parameters. Conclusion: The medication adherence of T2DM patients in the area under study was good. A larger study in a wider population is warranted to obtain a more representative picture of this important factor which contributes to public health

    Interleukin (IL)-17A and IL-17F and asthma in Saudi Arabia: mRNA transcript levels and gene polymorphisms

    Asthma is a multifactorial disorder and both genetic and environmental factors contribute to its development. The present study explored cytokines interleukin (IL)-17A and IL17F levels as usable parameters for the diagnosis of asthmatics Saudi patients. Blood samples were collected from 100 asthma patients and 100 matched controls. The transcript mRNA levels in whole blood were determined by real-time reverse-transcription polymerase chain reaction. Expression studies showed that levels of IL17A and IL17F were significantly higher in asthma patients compared to controls [IL17A: 1.112 (2.088) vs 0.938 (1.363)]; IL17F: 0.707 (1.33) vs 0.667 (0.590). The mRNA transcripts of IL17A and IL17F were positively and significantly correlated in all subjects examined in this study: controls as well as asthma patients (r = 0.455, P < 0.01 for controls and r = 0.644, P < 0.01 for patients). These findings suggest that asthma is characterized by an elevation of cytokines IL17A and IL17F and the measurement of their expression can be a valuable parameter for the diagnosis of asthma.Keywords: Asthma, interleukin-17F (IL17F), interleukin-17A (IL17A), gene expression, real time-polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR), Saudi Arabia.African Journal of Biotechnology Vol. 12(23), pp. 3615-362

    Finite Element Analysis of Steel Plates with Rectangular Openings Subjected to Axial Stress

    Steel plates with openings are among the important ship structural components used in the ship’s hull to withstand the hydrostatic forces of the ocean, which cause sagging and hogging moments at the ship’s bottom. The existence of openings on plates can cause structural rupture, stress concentration and a decrease in ultimate strength. This research is aimed at investigating the influence of selected parameters on the ultimate capacity of steel plates with rectangular holes subjected to axial stress, using ANSYS finite element analysis (FEA) under its non-linear static structural programme. The main parameters investigated in this paper are the plate thickness, opening aspect ratio, number of openings, position of openings, and the boundary condition of the plate. The influence of these parameters on the stress of plates and their deformation was evaluated.     A standardised template for reporting lower limb kinematic waveform movement compensations from a sensor-based portable clinical movement analysis toolkit

    Objectives To develop a standardised template to support physiotherapist reporting of lower limb kinematic waveform data Design Within and between user agreement identification of movement compensation strategies. Setting University Health Board Physiotherapy Department Participants Fourteen individuals with anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction performed overground gait, double-leg squat, and stair ascent wearing body-worn sensors. Six users viewed 252 kinematic waveforms of hip, knee and ankle joint angles in the sagittal and frontal planes. Main outcome measures Between and within-user observed agreement and themes from movement analysis reports Results Between-user observed agreement for presence of a movement compensation was 0.6–0.9 for the sagittal plane and 0.75–1.0 for the frontal place. Within-user observed agreement was 0.57–1.00 for the sagittal plane and 0.71–1.00 for the frontal plane. Three themes and seven categories were identified from the waveform interpretations: Amount (qualitative and quantitative description), timing (phase, discrete time point, cycle), and nature (peak, range of motion, timing) of the compensation. Conclusion There was good agreement between users at identifying the presence of movement compensation from the kinematic waveforms, but there was variation in how movement compensations were described. An interactive report, a standardised template for interpretation of kinematic waveforms, and training to support the clinical application of a movement analysis toolkit are proposed

    Modulated Entanglement Evolution Via Correlated Noises

    We study entanglement dynamics in the presence of correlated environmental noises. Specifically, we investigate the quantum entanglement dynamics of two spins in the presence of correlated classical white noises, deriving Markov master equation and obtaining explicit solutions for several interesting classes of initial states including Bell states and X form density matrices. We show how entanglement can be enhanced or reduced by the correlation between the two participating noises.Comment: 9 pages, 4 figures.     Genetic diversity of the Nubian ibex in Oman as revealed by mitochondrial DNA

    The Nubian ibex (Capra nubiana) is patchily distributed across parts of Africa and Arabia. In Oman, it is one of the few free-ranging wild mammals found in the central and southern regions. Its population is declining due to habitat degradation, human expansion, poaching and fragmentation. Here, we investigated the population's genetic diversity using mitochondrial DNA (D-loop 186 bp and cytochrome b 487 bp). We found that the Nubian ibex in the southern region of Oman was more diverse (D-loop HD; 0.838) compared with the central region (0.511) and gene flow between them was restricted. We compared the genetic profiles of wild Nubian ibex from Oman with captive ibex. A Bayesian phylogenetic tree showed that wild Nubian ibex form a distinct clade independent from captive animals. This divergence was supported by high mean distances (D-loop 0.126, cytochrome b 0.0528) and high FST statistics (D-loop 0.725, cytochrome b 0.968). These results indicate that captive ibex are highly unlikely to have originated from the wild population in Oman and the considerable divergence suggests that the wild population in Oman should be treated as a distinct taxonomic unit. Further nuclear genetic work will be required to fully elucidate the degree of global taxonomic divergence of Nubian ibex populations

    Polyamine metabolism is involved in adipogenesis of 3T3-L1 cells

    Polyamines spermidine and spermine are known to be required for mammalian cell proliferation and for embryonic development. Alpha-difluoromethylornithine (DFMO), an inhibitor of ornithine decarboxylase (ODC) a limiting enzyme of polyamine biosynthesis, depleted the cellular polyamines and prevented triglyceride accumulation and differentiation in 3T3-L1 cells. In this study, to explore the function of polyamines in adipogenesis, we examined the effect of polyamine biosynthesis inhibitors on adipocyte differentiation and lipid accumulation of 3T3-L1 cells. The spermidine synthase inhibitor trans-4-methylcyclohexylamine (MCHA) increased spermine/spermidine ratios, whereas the spermine synthase inhibitor N-(3-aminopropyl)-cyclohexylamine (APCHA) decreased the ratios in the cells. MCHA was found to decrease lipid accumulation and GPDH activity during differentiation, while APCHA increased lipid accumulation and GPDH activity indicating the enhancement of differentiation. The polyamine-acetylating enzyme, spermidine/spermine N1-acetyltransferase (SSAT) activity was increased within a few hours after stimulus for differentiation, and was found to be elevated by APCHA. In mature adipocytes APCHA decreased lipid accumulation while MCHA had the opposite effect. An acetylpolyamine oxidase and spermine oxidase inhibitor MDL72527 or an antioxidant N-acetylcysteine prevented the promoting effect of APCHA on adipogenesis. These results suggest that not only spermine/spermidine ratios but also polyamine catabolic enzyme activity may contribute to adipogenesis
