    The orbital elements and physical properties of the eclipsing binary BD+36 3317, a probable member of δ\delta Lyr cluster

    Context. The fact that eclipsing binaries belong to a stellar group is useful, because the former can be used to estimate distance and additional properties of the latter, and vice versa. Aims. Our goal is to analyse new spectroscopic observations of BD+363317+36^\circ3317 along with the photometric observations from the literature and, for the first time, to derive all basic physical properties of this binary. We aim to find out whether the binary is indeed a member of the δ\delta Lyr open cluster. Methods. The spectra were reduced using the IRAF program and the radial velocities were measured with the program SPEFO. The line spectra of both components were disentangled with the program KOREL and compared to a grid of synthetic spectra. The final combined radial-velocity and photometric solution was obtained with the program PHOEBE. Results. We obtained the following physical elements of BD+363317+36^\circ3317: M1=2.24±0.07MM_1 = 2.24\pm0.07 M_{\odot}, M2=1.52±0.03MM_2 = 1.52\pm0.03 M_{\odot}, R1=1.76±0.01RR_1 = 1.76\pm0.01 R_{\odot}, R2=1.46±0.01RR_2 = 1.46\pm0.01 R_{\odot}, logL1=1.52±0.08Llog L_1 = 1.52\pm0.08 L_{\odot}, logL2=0.81±0.07Llog L_2 = 0.81\pm0.07 L_{\odot}. We derived the effective temperatures Teff,1=10450±420T_{eff,1} = 10450 \pm 420 K, Teff,2=7623±328T_{eff,2} = 7623 \pm 328 K. Both components are located close to ZAMS in the Hertzsprung-Russell (HR) diagram and their masses and radii are consistent with the predictions of stellar evolutionary models. Our results imply the average distance to the system d = 330±29330\pm29 pc. We re-investigated the membership of BD+363317+36^\circ3317 in the δ\delta Lyr cluster and confirmed it. The distance to BD+363317+36^\circ3317, given above, therefore represents an accurate estimate of the true distance for δ\delta Lyr cluster. Conclusions. The reality of the δ\delta Lyr cluster and the cluster membership of BD+363317+36^\circ3317 have been reinforced.Comment: 10 pages, 7 figures. Accepted for publication in A&

    Improved model of the triple system V746 Cas that has a bipolar magnetic field associated with the tertiary

    V746 Cas is known to be a triple system composed of a close binary with an alternatively reported period of either 25.4d or 27.8d and a third component in a 62000d orbit. The object was also reported to exhibit multiperiodic light variations with periods from 0.83d to 2.50d, on the basis of which it was classified as a slowly pulsating B star. Interest in further investigation of this system was raised by the detection of a variable magnetic field. Analysing spectra from four instruments, earlier published radial velocities, and several sets of photometric observations, we arrived at the following conclusions: (1) The optical spectrum is dominated by the lines of the B-type primary (Teff1~16500(100) K), contributing 70% of the light in the optical region, and a slightly cooler B tertiary (Teff3~13620(150) K). The lines of the low-mass secondary are below our detection threshold; we estimate that it could be a normal A or F star. (2) We resolved the ambiguity in the value of the inner binary period and arrived at a linear ephemeris of T_super.conj.=HJD 2443838.78(81)+25.41569(42)xE. (3) The intensity of the magnetic field undergoes a~sinusoidal variation in phase with one of the known photometric periods, namely 2.503867(19)d, which we identify with the rotational period of the tertiary. (4) The second photometric 1.0649524(40)d period is identified with the rotational period of the B-type primary, but this interpretation is much less certain and needs further verification. (5) If our interpretation of photometric periods is confirmed, the classification of the object as a slowly pulsating B star should be revised. (6) Applying an N-body model to different types of available observational data, we constrain the orbital inclination of the inner orbit to ~60 deg to 85 deg even in the absence of eclipses, and estimate the probable properties of the triple system and its components.Comment: Accepted for publication in Astronomy and Astrophysic

    OBJECTIVE:Objective assessment of the cognitive status and activities of daily living are required for the diagnosis of neurocognitive disorders. No cognitive screening test with normative values exist in Turkey. This study aims to standardize a widely applicable cognitive screening test, determine the activities of daily living in a population-based sample as well as identifying certain individual and environmental risk factors for cognitive disorders. METHOD:Since Mini-Mental-State-Examination (MMSE) is widely used in primary and secondary care and a version for the uneducated exists, an expanded and modified version of MMSE, Modified Mini Mental Test (3MS) was selected for standardization. After the adaptation and pre-testing processes, a population-based study including the individuals over the age of 55 was planned to determine the normative values using the primary health care system in Ankara, Turkey, An age-based stratification procedure was applied. Data were collected through a survey form that was developed to identify certain healthrelated, occupational and environmental risk factors associated with cognitive disorders among with the cognitive evaluation. The study was funded by the Scientific and Technological Research Council of Turkey, Grant No: 214S048. RESULTS:The population-based study was conducted between January and June 2016. The data of a total of 2158 participants were analyzed. The geographic distribution of the final sample was representative of the total population in Ankara. Of the study sample, 51,3%were female, and 60% had over 5 years of education. Approximately 25% of all participants were 'screening-positive' for neurocognitive impairment and age was inversely related with daily functioning. CONCLUSION:We were able to reach a population-based sample to determine the normative values of a widely applicable cognitive screening test and the activities of daily living as well as evaluate dementia-related risk factors in Turkey. The findings of the study indicated that 3MS-Turkish form is a cognitive secreening test, which can be widely used in Turkey

    Evaluation of the outcome benefit conferred by intensive surveillance strategies in women with early-stage endometrial cancer

    Introduction: The optimum follow-up regimen after treatment for early-stage endometrial cancer with curative intent is unknown. The National Comprehensive Cancer Network recommends a physical exam and vaginal cytology every three to six months for two years then at six to 12 month intervals with annual chest X-rays (CXR). However, there is debate as to whether intensive follow-up results in an improvement in outcomes for those with recurrent endometrial cancer. Objective: To determine if intensive surveillance for recurrent cancer in women with early-stage endometrial cancer improves their outcomes. Materials and Methods: The Roswell Park Cancer Institute tumor registry was used to identify patients with Stage I and II endometrial cancer initially diagnosed and treated over an 18-year period, who subsequently recurred. Clinico-pathological variables were abstracted. Patients were divided into two groups, depending on their mode of diagnosis of recurrent cancer: 1) routine screening, or 2) symptomatic. The outcomes between the two groups were compared. Results: Fifty-two patients met inclusion criteria. Twenty-three patients were diagnosed via routine screening methods and 29 were symptomatic at presentation. Groups were equally represented with respect to age, stage, grade, adjuvant therapy, site of recurrence (local, distant), and time to recurrence (p > 0.05). Median survival time was 79 months for those diagnosed during routine screening and 80 months for symptomatic patients (p > 0.05). Conclusion: Pap smear and CXR appear to be of limited utility as the present study has shown that women diagnosed as a result of intensive surveillance did not have a better outcome than those who presented when symptomatic

    Optoelectronic performance comparison of new thiophene linked benzimidazole conjugates with diverse substitution patterns

    In an approach to develop efficient organic optoelectronic devices to be used in light-driven systems, a series of three thiophene linked benzimidazole conjugates were synthesized and characterized. The combination of two thiophene rings to a benzimidazole core decorated with different functional groups (such as –OCH3, –N(CH3)2, –CF3) resulted in donor-acceptor type molecular scaffold. The effect of the electronic behavior of the substituents on the optical, electrochemical, morphological and electron/hole transporting properties of the dyes were systematically investigated. DTBI2 dye exhibited distinct absorption properties among the other studied dyes because N,N-dimethylamino group initiated intramolecular charge transfer (ICT) process in the studied solvents. In solid state, the dyes exhibit peaks extending up to 600 nm. Depending on the solvent polarities, dyes show significant wavelength changes on their fluorescence emission spectra in the excited states. Morphological parameters of the thin films spin-coated from CHCl3 solution were investigated by using AFM instrument; furthermore photovoltaic responses are reported, even though photovoltaic performances of the fabricated solar cells with different configurations are quite low. © 2017 Elsevier B.V

    Validity and reliability analysis of the Turkish version of pediatric nutritional risk score scale

    BACKGROUND/AIMS: We aimed to perform the validity and reliability analysis of the Turkish version of the Pediatric Nutritional Risk Score (PNRS). MATERIALS AND METHODS: The study group consisted of 149 patients aged between 1 month and 18 years who were admitted to the hospital for at least 48 h. The patients' age, gender, anthropometric measurements, length of stay, admission diagnosis, daily body weights, food consumption, and pain status were recorded. Backward and forward translations into Turkish were done. PNRS was performed by two different physicians. The consistency of the PNRS results was evaluated to determine the validity of PNRS. The sensitivity, specificity, positive predictive value (PPV), and negative predictive value (NPV) were calculated. RESULTS: Of all patients, 69 (46.3%) were female and 80 (53.7%) were male. The mean length of the stay was 7.3±4.0 days. The mean age of the patients was 51.9±63.6 months. The Kappa coefficient between the two physicians was 0.66. Weight loss was observed in 65.2% of the patients in the high-risk group and 25.4% in the low-risk group. The hospital malnutrition rate was 31.5%. A higher risk was identified in those with <50% food intake and more severe disease. The specificity, sensitivity, NPV, and PPV of PNRS were 82.1%, 77.8%, 92.0%, and 58.3%, respectively. CONCLUSION: A good consistency suggests that the Turkish validation was achieved successfully. The power of PNRS to discriminate the patients with moderate-low risk of developing malnutrition is higher than the patients with high risk. PNRS is considered a valid and reliable tool to establish the risk of malnutrition in the hospitalized patients
