    Solvent-Free High-Temperature Capillary Stamping of Stimuli-Responsive Polymers: Wettability Management by Orthogonal Substrate Functionalization

    The wettability of surfaces determines their antifouling, antifogging, anti-icing, and self-cleaning properties as well as their usability for sensing, oil-water separation, water collection, and water purification. Solvent-free high-temperature capillary stamping of stimuli-responsive polymers yielding arrays of stimuli-responsive polymer microdots on differently modified substrates enables the flexible generation of switchable surfaces with different water contact angles (WCAs). Potential problems associated with the deposition of polymer solutions, such as the handling of volatile organic solvents, phase separation induced by solvent evaporation, and capillarity-driven flow processes, are circumvented. We used composite stamps with topographically patterned contact surfaces consisting of metallic nickel cores and porous MnO2 coatings taking up the stimuli-responsive polymers. The short transport paths from the MnO2 contact layers to the counterpart substrates enabled the stamping of polymer melts containing components impeding flow, such as carbon nanotubes (CNTs). Thus-obtained arrays of polymer-CNT hybrid microdots prevent problems associated with continuous coatings including delamination and crack propagation. Moreover, the range within which the properties of the stamped stimuli-responsive polymer microdots are switchable can be tuned by orthogonal substrate modification. As an example, we stamped hybrid microdots consisting of poly(2-(methacryloyloxy)ethyl ferrocenecarboxylate) (PFcMA) and CNTs onto indium tin oxide (ITO) substrates. Coating the ITO substrates with a poly(ethylene oxide)-terminated silane shifted the WCAs obtained by switching the PFcMA between its oxidized and reduced states by nearly 50{\deg}

    Endovascular thrombectomy for basilar artery occlusion stroke: Analysis of the German Stroke Registry‐Endovascular Treatment

    Background and purpose Acute ischemic stroke due to basilar artery occlusion (BAO) causes the most severe strokes and has a poor prognosis. Data regarding efficacy of endovascular thrombectomy in BAO are sparse. Therefore, in this study, we performed an analysis of the therapy of patients with BAO in routine clinical practice. Methods Patients enrolled between June 2015 and December 2019 in the German Stroke Registry-Endovascular Treatment (GSR-ET) were analyzed. Primary outcomes were successful reperfusion (modified Thrombolysis in Cerebral Infarction [mTICI] score of 2b-3), substantial neurological improvement (≥8-point National Institute of Health Stroke Scale [NIHSS] score reduction from admission to discharge or NIHSS score at discharge ≤1), and good functional outcome at 3 months (modified Rankin Scale [mRS] score of 0–2). Results Out of 6635 GSR-ET patients, 640 (9.6%) patients (age 72.2 ± 13.3, 43.3% female) experienced BAO (median [interquartile range] NIHSS score 17 [8, 27]). Successful reperfusion was achieved in 88.4%. Substantial neurological improvement at discharge was reached by 45.5%. At 3-month follow-up, good clinical outcome was observed in 31.1% of patients and the mortality rate was 39.2%. Analysis of mTICI3 versus mTICI2b groups showed considerable better outcome in those with mTICI3 (38.9% vs. 24.4%; p = 0.005). The strongest predictors of good functional outcome were intravenous thrombolysis (IVT) treatment (odds ratio [OR] 3.04, 95% confidence interval [CI] 1.76–5.23) and successful reperfusion (OR 4.92, 95% CI 1.15–21.11), while the effect of time between symptom onset and reperfusion seemed to be small. Conclusions Acute reperfusion strategies in BAO are common in daily practice and can achieve good rates of successful reperfusion, neurological improvement and good functional outcome. Our data suggest that, in addition to IVT treatment, successful and, in particular, complete reperfusion (mTICI3) strongly predicts good outcome, while time from symptom onset seemed to have a lower impact

    Unexpected diversity in socially synchronized rhythms of shorebirds

    The behavioural rhythms of organisms are thought to be under strong selection, influenced by the rhythmicity of the environment. Such behavioural rhythms are well studied in isolated individuals under laboratory conditions, but free-living individuals have to temporally synchronize their activities with those of others, including potential mates, competitors, prey and predators. Individuals can temporally segregate their daily activities (for example, prey avoiding predators, subordinates avoiding dominants) or synchronize their activities (for example, group foraging, communal defence, pairs reproducing or caring for offspring). The behavioural rhythms that emerge from such social synchronization and the underlying evolutionary and ecological drivers that shape them remain poorly understood. Here we investigate these rhythms in the context of biparental care, a particularly sensitive phase of social synchronization where pair members potentially compromise their individual rhythms. Using data from 729 nests of 91 populations of 32 biparentally incubating shorebird species, where parents synchronize to achieve continuous coverage of developing eggs, we report remarkable within-and between-species diversity in incubation rhythms. Between species, the median length of one parent's incubation bout varied from 1-19 h, whereas period length-the time in which a parent's probability to incubate cycles once between its highest and lowest value-varied from 6-43 h. The length of incubation bouts was unrelated to variables reflecting energetic demands, but species relying on crypsis (the ability to avoid detection by other animals) had longer incubation bouts than those that are readily visible or who actively protect their nest against predators. Rhythms entrainable to the 24-h light-dark cycle were less prevalent at high latitudes and absent in 18 species. Our results indicate that even under similar environmental conditions and despite 24-h environmental cues, social synchronization can generate far more diverse behavioural rhythms than expected from studies of individuals in captivity. The risk of predation, not the risk of starvation, may be a key factor underlying the diversity in these rhythms.</p

    Improved upper limb function in non-ambulant children with SMA type 2 and 3 during nusinersen treatment: a prospective 3-years SMArtCARE registry study

    Background The development and approval of disease modifying treatments have dramatically changed disease progression in patients with spinal muscular atrophy (SMA). Nusinersen was approved in Europe in 2017 for the treatment of SMA patients irrespective of age and disease severity. Most data on therapeutic efficacy are available for the infantile-onset SMA. For patients with SMA type 2 and type 3, there is still a lack of sufficient evidence and long-term experience for nusinersen treatment. Here, we report data from the SMArtCARE registry of non-ambulant children with SMA type 2 and typen 3 under nusinersen treatment with a follow-up period of up to 38 months. Methods SMArtCARE is a disease-specific registry with data on patients with SMA irrespective of age, treatment regime or disease severity. Data are collected during routine patient visits as real-world outcome data. This analysis included all non-ambulant patients with SMA type 2 or 3 below 18 years of age before initiation of treatment. Primary outcomes were changes in motor function evaluated with the Hammersmith Functional Motor Scale Expanded (HFMSE) and the Revised Upper Limb Module (RULM). Results Data from 256 non-ambulant, pediatric patients with SMA were included in the data analysis. Improvements in motor function were more prominent in upper limb: 32.4% of patients experienced clinically meaningful improvements in RULM and 24.6% in HFMSE. 8.6% of patients gained a new motor milestone, whereas no motor milestones were lost. Only 4.3% of patients showed a clinically meaningful worsening in HFMSE and 1.2% in RULM score. Conclusion Our results demonstrate clinically meaningful improvements or stabilization of disease progression in non-ambulant, pediatric patients with SMA under nusinersen treatment. Changes were most evident in upper limb function and were observed continuously over the follow-up period. Our data confirm clinical trial data, while providing longer follow-up, an increased number of treated patients, and a wider range of age and disease severity

    The time window for successful right-hemispheric language reorganization in children.

    AIM To identify, in a retrospective, observational study, the time window during which successful right-hemispheric language reorganization is possible after left-hemispheric brain damage. METHOD 25 patients (10 females; age 6-41 years; ≥12 months after insult; age at insult 0;3-15;11 years) with acute, language-relevant left-hemispheric insults acquired during childhood and adolescence completed questionnaires for self-assessment of language problems. 12 patients of those reporting no (n = 8) or only moderate (n = 4) language problems participated in language fMRI. RESULTS Language outcome of lesions occurring before 5 years of age (n = 7) was always favorable, and language was right-lateralized (2 patients: age at lesion < 2 years) or bilateral (3 patients: age at lesion 2-5 years). Following lesions occurring after 5 years of age, language outcome was often unfavorable (11/18 patients: moderate or severe problems), and of the 7 patients without problems, none showed right-hemispheric reorganization (fMRI available in 4). INTERPRETATION The combination of normal language outcome and right-hemispheric language reorganization after a left-hemispheric lesion sustained after the neonatal period is extremely rare. Functionally sufficient right-hemispheric language was documented in only two patients with lesions acquired before two years of age
