    Master crossover behavior of parachor correlations for one-component fluids

    The master asymptotic behavior of the usual parachor correlations, expressing surface tension σ\sigma as a power law of the density difference ρLρV\rho_{L}-\rho_{V} between coexisting liquid and vapor, is analyzed for a series of pure compounds close to their liquid-vapor critical point, using only four critical parameters (βc)1(\beta_{c})^{-1}, αc\alpha_{c}, ZcZ_{c} and YcY_{c}, for each fluid. ... The main consequences of these theoretical estimations are discussed in the light of engineering applications and process simulations where parachor correlations constitute one of the most practical method for estimating surface tension from density and capillary rise measurements

    Master singular behavior for the Sugden factor of the one-component fluids near their gas-liquid critical point

    We present the master (i.e. unique) behavior of the squared capillary length - so called the Sudgen factor-, as a function of the temperature-like field along the critical isochore, asymptotically close to the gas-liquid critical point of twenty (one component) fluids. This master behavior is obtained using the scale dilatation of the relevant physical fields of the one-component fluids. The scale dilatation introduces the fluid-dependent scale factors in a manner analog with the linear relations between physical fields and scaling fields needed by the renormalization theory applied to the Ising-like universality class. The master behavior for the Sudgen factor satisfies hyperscaling and can be asymptotically fitted by the leading terms of the theoretical crossover functions for the correlation length and the susceptibility in the homogeneous domain recently obtained from massive renormalization in field theory. In the absence of corresponding estimation of the theoretical crossover functions for the interfacial tension, we define the range of the temperature-like field where the master leading power law can be practically used to predict the singular behavior of the Sudgen factor in conformity with the theoretical description provided by the massive renormalization scheme within the extended asymptotic domain of the one-component fluid "subclass"

    The development and implementation of a 12-month simulation-based learning curriculum for pediatric emergency medicine fellows utilizing debriefing with good judgment and rapid cycle deliberate practice

    Abstract Background There are currently training gaps, primarily procedural and teamwork skills, for pediatric emergency medicine (PEM) fellows. Simulation-based learning (SBL) has been suggested as an educational modality to help fill those gaps. However, there is little evidence suggesting how to do so. The objective of this project is to develop and implement an SBL curriculum for PEM fellows with established curriculum development processes and instructional design strategies to improve PEM fellowship training. Methods We developed a 12-month longitudinal SBL curriculum focused on needs assessment, instructional strategies, and evaluation. The curriculum development process led us to combine the instructional strategies of debriefing with good judgment, rapid cycle deliberate practice, and task-training to improve core PEM skills such as procedural competence, crisis resource management, and managing complex medical and traumatic emergencies. Using multiple approaches, we measured outcomes related to learners (attendance, performance, critical procedure opportunities), instructor performance, and program structure. Results Eight/Eight (100%) PEM fellows participated in this curriculum from July 2015 to June 2017 with an overall attendance rate of 68%. Learners self-reported high satisfaction (4.4/5, SD = 0.5) and perceived educational value (4.9/5, SD = 0.38) with the curriculum and overall program structure. Learners had numerous opportunities to practice critical procedures such as airway management (20 opportunities), defibrillator use (ten opportunities), and others (ten opportunities). Learner Debriefing Assessment for Simulation in Healthcare (short version) scores had mean scores greater than 5.8/7 (SD = 0.89) across all six elements. Conclusions This longitudinal SBL curriculum combining debriefing with good judgment and rapid cycle deliberate practice can be a feasible method of reducing current training gaps (specifically with critical procedure opportunities) in PEM fellowship training. More work is needed to quantify the training gap reduction and to refine the curriculum

    Pancreatic neuroendocrine tumors (PanNETs) are the second most common pancreatic malignancy and cause significant morbidity and mortality. Neuroendocrine microadenomas have been proposed as a potential precursor lesion for sporadic PanNETs. In this study, we applied telomere-specific fluorescent in situ hybridization (FISH) to a series of well-characterized sporadic neuroendocrine microadenomas and investigated the prevalence of alterations in known PanNET driver genes (MEN1 and ATRX/DAXX) in these same tumors using immunohistochemistry for the encoded proteins. We identified aberrant Menin expression in 14 of 19 (74%) microadenomas, suggesting that alterations in Menin, at least a subset of which was likely due to somatic mutation, are early events in pancreatic neuroendocrine tumorigenesis. In contrast, none of the microadenomas met criteria for the alternative lengthening of telomeres phenotype (ALT) based on telomere FISH, a phenotype that is strongly correlated to ATRX or DAXX mutations. Two of 13 microadenomas (15%) were noted to have very rare abnormal bright telomere foci on FISH, suggestive of early ALT, but these lesions did not show loss of ATRX or DAXX protein expression by immunohistochemistry. Overall, these data suggest that loss of Menin is an early event in pancreatic neuroendocrine tumorigenesis and that ATRX/DAXX loss and ALT are relatively late events
