Total Quality Management (TQM) practices have been positively associated with organizational performance particularly for business-oriented organization in the manufacturing and service sectors. While TQM as a successful managerial strategy is generally accepted in commercial organizations, its role in public sector especially in higher education institution is still controversial. Only a few empirical studies exist to support the implementation of TQM in higher education institution. Besides, previous studies have shown that the TQM practices adapted in higher education institution are predominantly in administrative areas and teaching activities only. Accordingly it is too hard to find any TQM literatures focusing and discussing on the issues of research and development (R&D) management in higher education setting. Therefore there is a big gap in the TQM literature that has to be filled and a new framework of TQM is called for, along with the modification of the TQM practices for a unique culture of research. In addition, having a good practice of research management in higher education institution is really critical since it will affects the research performance such as the level of technology transfer. Looking at the current phenomenon of technology transfer in higher education institution, there is a need and the justification for doing a research is to understand how TQM practices in R&D management would explain the level of technology transfer. This study is able to prove that there is a positive impact of TQM practices on the level of technology transfer. There are seven constructs in measuring TQM practices i.e. leadership, strategic planning, customer focus, data and information management, people management, process and system management, and partnership and resources. While the indicators of technology transfer are ranging from publication, seminar, consultation, invention disclosure, patenting, licensing, royalties and spin-off company. This study used academic researchers from four research universities as the unit of analysis and had employed stratified sampling technique in the data collection procedure. The instrument used in the data collection process is a set of questionnaire which recorded a high response rate. The instrument had been validated using certain procedure such as expert opinion assessment, pilot test and factor analysis. It also has a higher degree of reliability. The factor analysis was carried out and Hierarchical Multiple Regression analysis that takes into account the personal factor was used to test the main hypothesis of the study. The analyses revealed that there are some modifications on the original construct of TQM and there is a positive significant relationship between TQM practices and level of technology transfer. In conclusion the findings of the study have contributed to the enhancement of understanding on the subject matter and more importantly it also contribute to the development and affirmation of theories in the field of quality management

Flow equations in commercial gas piping system

    Get PDF
There are various types of flow equations in commercial gas piping system and this thesis will covered about the comparison of Cox and Pole‟s method. FORTRAN 90 software was used to validate the manual calculation of both equations and a comparative study was made. The analytical solutions of the resulting differential equations are obtained in the form of Cox and Pole‟s equations. The equations give functional relationship between flow rate, inlet pressure and outlet pressure, as well as pressure drop at any given length. The effect of pressure drop per segment on gas flow rate is presented. Both of the equation was calculated manually from the commercial area gas piping route and the syntax generated from the equations were compiled and executed in F90 with no errors. The Cox‟s method was found more economically with smaller pipe size but allowable pressure drop in each section, compared to Pole‟s method. The equations considerably enhance gas pipeline design in terms of both ease of usage and accuracy. A simple computer program in FORTRAN 90 is developed to handle these calculations

The concept of democratic classroom is controversial for being vague and idealistic. It has been termed more rhetorical than a realistic. Despite of this, the role of democratic classroom in socialization of students has well recognized in every age. Therefore, a noticeable need exists to assess the degree and direction of relationship between democratic classroom and students’ social skill development. Previous studies have reported that classroom environment is a good predictor of social development of students. However, little research has explored the perspectives of students about their social skill development in a classroom environment, particularly focusing the three social skills such as listening to others carefully, waiting for turn and raising hands to ask questions. The present study fills this gap in the current literature on the relationship between democracy and education. The aim of this paper is to examine the effect of democratic classroom environment on social skills development of students. Based on causal comparative design, the study used a self-developed questionnaire to examine the perceptions of 80 male and female students selected on random sampling basis from 20 secondary schools in one district of Khyber Pkahtunkwa, Pakistan. For data analysis, Chi-square test was applied. Results of the study showed that there was no significant difference in the perceptions of male versus female secondary school students regarding the effect of classroom environment on social skills of students. Both equally considered democratic classroom environment important for social skills development. The study concludes that democratic classroom has a positive effect on all the three social skills development of students. DOI: 10.5901/mjss.2015.v6n2s1p1

A Study on Work Design and Country Values

    Get PDF
The performance of an organization is dependent on the work design or in other words, the job design. It includes the elements of work included in the job as well as the work environment. With the creation of multinational companies operating in different countries, the cultural element has been added to the organization entity. The question has been whether work design of an MNC, which was originated in the country of origin of the MNC, can also be exported to other countries resulting in the same efficiency of work. This study through literature review looks into major work designs developed in various countries and regions of the world to answer the above given question i.e. whether culture is the moderating factor between job design and the performance

This paper puts forwards different existing theories on classifying cultures of different countries. The first theory it introduces is of Hofstede’s cultural aspects, then the Hall’s Method of classifying culture into low and high context, and lastly the model of cultural differences by Trompenaars. Following that is the discussion on the interaction between organizational behaviour and the national culture. The focus would be the influence of culture on employee motivation, communication, organizational changes and conflict resolution

Does the Suitability of National Culture Matters in the Adoption of Six Sigma?

    Get PDF
The concept and methodology of Six Sigma was developed by the American companies within the local culture of America. Therefore it is grounded on the standards, ethics and behaviours represented by America. The present study proposes that implementing Six Sigma in other countries with different cultures, norms and behaviours may have adjustment problems, as the required culture, values and behaviours for Six Sigma do not match with the local cultures of countries. A conceptual model is proposed which would utilize the Hofstede’s cultural dimensions to determine the effect of national culture at each phase of Six Sigma process
