    Specialist taxa restricted to threatened habitats contribute significantly to the regional diversity of Peltigera (Lecanoromycetes, Ascomycota) in Estonia

    The widespread cyanolichen genus Peltigera comprises many insufficiently known poorly delimited and/ or undescribed species. Phylogenetic analysis of 252 Peltigera specimens from a wide range of habitat types in Estonia revealed 31 putative taxa (OTUs). Multivariate analysis revealed habitat-specific segregation between the Peltigera species along a gradient from humid eutrophic forests to dry oligotrophic forests and grasslands and along a soil pH gradient from alkaline soils of alvar grasslands to acidic soils of conifer forests. The diversity of Peltigera was the highest on roadsides and dunes and the lowest in alvar habitats which, however, supported the unique assemblage of undescribed Peltigera taxa. Deciduous broad-leaved forests, too, included several undescribed or rare and red-listed species. The results demonstrate that in Estonia many Peltigera species have narrow habitat requirements and are at present threatened by habitat loss and degradation.Peer reviewe

    Relationships between mycobiont identity, photobiont specificity and ecological preferences in the lichen genus Peltigera (Ascomycota) in Estonia (northeastern Europe)

    We studied the genotype diversity of cyanobacterial symbionts in the predominately terricolous cyanolichen genus Peltigera (Peltigerales, Lecanoromycetes) in Estonia. Our sampling comprised 252 lichen specimens collected in grasslands and forests from different parts of the country, which represented all common Peltigera taxa in the region. The cyanobacteria were grouped according to their tRNA(Leu) (UAA) intron sequences, and mycobiont identities were confirmed using fungal ITS sequences. The studied Peltigera species associated with 34 different "Peltigera-type" Nostoc trnL genotypes. Some Peltigera species associated with one or a few trnL genotypes while others associated with a much wider range of genotypes. Mycobiont identity was the primary factor that determined the presence of the specific Nostoc genotype within the studied Peltigera thalli. However, the species-specific patterns of cyanobiont selectivity did not always reflect phylogenetic relationships among the studied fungal species but correlated instead with habitat preferences. Several taxa from different sections of the genus Peltigera were associated with the same Nostoc genotype or with genotypes in the same habitat, indicating the presence of functional guild structure in the photobiont community. Some Nostoc trnL genotypes were only found in the Peltigera species of moist and mesic forest environments, while another set of Nostoc genotypes was typically found in the Peltigera species of xeric habitats. Some Nostoc trnL genotypes were only found in the Peltigera taxa that are common on alvars and may have specialized to living in this unusual and threatened habitat type.     Enriching strategic variety in new ventures through external knowledge

    To build profitable market positions, new ventures have to address multiple challenges on several fronts. These ventures can compete by being simple (focused) or applying varied ways to compete. The likelihood of these ventures remaining competitive depends on their ability to build novelty into their products and operations, an activity that requires infusing knowledge into their operations. Most ventures, however, have limited knowledge bases and the reach (scope) of their external connections is limited, a factor that prompts them to tap into different external sources in their local areas. This article reports an empirical study of 140 new ventures located in seven regional clusters in Spain. The results show that new ventures can enrich the variety of their strategic repertoire by accessing diverse sources of external knowledge and being exposed to external novel knowledge, while absorptive capacity moderates this relationship. The degree of social development of these clusters also has a positive impact on the strategic variety of new ventures, exhibiting an inverted U-shape curve

    Customer perceptions on logistics outsourcing in the European consumer goods industry

    This paper investigates customer perceptions on three key logistics outsourcing decisions: why to outsource, what to outsource and how to manage satisfaction within third party logistics providers (3PLs) partnerships. In addition to an analysis of the current literature, a Europe-wide postal and telephone survey revealed that outsourcing in the consumer good industry is heavily service driven and focused on the traditional logistics functions. The key findings of the work are that cost aspects play a smaller role for outsourcing in the consumer goods industry than anticipated, and that performance measurement systems will require increased sophistication over the coming years. It was found that a considerable number of consumer goods companies admitting that soft issues, such as cultural incompatibility and poor communication, may lead to the failure of the 3PL partnership

    Epiphytic and Epixylic Lichen Species Diversity in Estonian Natural Forests

    The epiphytic and epixylic lichen flora of natural forests was recorded in different parts of Estonia. Altogether 232 taxa of lichens, lichenicolous fungi, or non-lichenized fungi were recorded, 10 of them listed in the Estonian Red Data Book. We found regional differences in lichen species composition and diversity caused by differences in the forest types. The tree-species-rich boreo-nemoral forests had the most diverse lichen flora, while the boreal forest dominated by coniferous trees or birch had the lowest diversity. The stand age proved to be significant in regard to the number of lichen species in a forest. The most remarkable effect on the diversity of forest lichen species was caused by the presence of Populus tremula. Aspen had the highest number of lichen species on the basal trunk and twigs, and also the highest number of host-specific lichen species

    ESTONIAN OUTWARD FOREIGN DIRECT INVESTMENTS

    This paper aims to analyse the role of outward foreign direct investments in the Estonian economy. The research is based on the macro data provided by the Bank of Estonia and on the results obtained from 70 firms that responded to the survey conducted by the authors in autumn 2001. In the process of research the firms in the sample were classified as follows: by the type of investors (direct and indirect), by the type of investments (production, trade, other services), and by the age of affiliations. It allowed us to find interesting differences in the behaviour patterns of various investors. The survey revealed that market related motives appear to be redominant among the factors that make Estonian firms to invest abroad. The most important effects on the parent company are related to additional market shares gained abroad and enhanced exports. Investments into the other Baltic countries have been more in line with earlier expectations than those into the CIS or the European Union..

    peer reviewedApplying molecular methods to fungi establishing lichenized associations with green algae or cyanobacteria has repeatedly revealed the existence of numerous phylogenetic taxa overlooked by classical taxonomic approaches. Here, we report taxonomical conclusions based on multiple species delimitation and validation analyses performed on an eight-locus dataset that includes world-wide representatives of the dolichorhizoid and scabrosoid clades in section Polydactylon of the genus Peltigera. Following the recommendations resulting from a consensus species delimitation approach and additional species validation analysis (BPP) performed in this study, we present a total of 25 species in the dolichorhizoid clade and nine in the scabrosoid clade, including respectively 18 and six species that are new to science and formally described. Additionnaly, one combination and three varieties (including two new to science) are proposed in the dolichorhizoid clade. The following 24 new species are described: P. appalachiensis, P. asiatica, P. borealis, P. borinquensis, P. chabanenkoae, P. clathrata, P. elixii, P. esslingeri, P. flabellae, P. gallowayi, P. hawaiiensis, P. holtanhartwigii, P. itatiaiae, P. hokkaidoensis, P. kukwae, P. massonii, P. mikado, P. nigriventris, P. orientalis, P. rangiferina, P. sipmanii, P. stanleyensis, P. vitikainenii and P. willdenowii; the following new varieties are introduced: P. kukwae var. phyllidiata and P. truculenta var. austroscabrosa; and the following new combination is introduced: P. hymenina var. dissecta. Each species from the dolichorhizoid and scabrosoid clades is morphologically and chemically described, illustrated, and characterized with ITS sequences. Identification keys are provided for the main biogeographic regions where species from the two clades occur. Morphological and chemical characters that are commonly used for species identification in the genus Peltigera cannot be applied to unambiguously recognize most molecularly circumscribed species, due to high variation of thalli formed by individuals within a fungal species, including the presence of distinct morphs in some cases, or low interspecific variation in others. The four commonly recognized morphospecies: P. dolichorhiza, P. neopolydactyla, P. pulverulenta and P. scabrosa in the dolichorhizoid and scabrosoid clades represent species complexes spread across multiple and often phylogenetically distantly related lineages. Geographic origin of specimens is often helpful for species recognition; however, ITS sequences are frequently required for a reliable identification
