Mechanical and thermal performance characterisation of compressed earth blocks
The present research is focused on an experimental investigation to evaluate the mechanical, durability, and thermal performance of compressed earth blocks (CEBs) produced in Portugal. CEBs were analysed in terms of electrical resistivity, ultrasonic pulse velocity, compressive strength, total water absorption, water absorption by capillarity, accelerated erosion test, and thermal transmittance evaluated in a guarded hotbox setup apparatus. Overall, the results showed that compressed earth blocks presented good mechanical and durability properties. Still, they had some issues in terms of porosity due to the particle size distribution of soil used for their production. The compressive strength value obtained was 9 MPa, which is considerably higher than the minimum requirements for compressed earth blocks. Moreover, they presented a heat transfer coefficient of 2.66 W/(m2·K). This heat transfer coefficient means that this type of masonry unit cannot be used in the building envelope without an additional thermal insulation layer but shows that they are suitable to be used in partition walls. Although CEBs have promising characteristics when compared to conventional bricks, results also showed that their proprieties could even be improved if optimisation of the soil mixture is implemented. The authors would like to acknowledge the support granted by the FEDER funds through

Aerobic Exercise Attenuated Bleomycin-Induced Lung Fibrosis in Th2-Dominant Mice
Introduction The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of aerobic exercise (AE) in reducing bleomycin- induced fibrosis in mice of a Th2-dominant immune background (BALB/c). Methods BALB/c mice were distributed into: sedentary, control (CON), Exercise-only (EX), sedentary, bleomycin-treated (BLEO) and bleomycin-treated+exercised (BLEO+EX);(n = 8/group). Following treadmill adaptation, 15 days following a single, oro-tracheal administration of bleomycin (1.5U/kg), AE was performed 5 days/week, 60min/day for 4 weeks at moderate intensity (60% of maximum velocity reached during a physical test) and assessed for pulmonary inflammation and remodeling, and cytokine levels in bronchoalveolar lavage (BAL). Results At 45 days post injury, compared to BLEO, BLEO+EX demonstrated reduced collagen deposition in the airways (p<0.001) and also in the lung parenchyma (p<0.001). In BAL, a decreased number of total leukocytes (p<0.01), eosinophils (p<0.001), lymphocytes (p<0.01), macrophages (p<0.01), and neutrophils (p<0.01), as well as reduced pro-inflammatory cytokines (CXCL-1;p<0.01), (IL-1 beta;p<0.001), (IL-5;p<0.01), (IL-6;p<0.001), (IL-13;p<0.01) and pro-fibrotic growth factor IGF-1 (p<0.001) were observed. Anti-inflammatory cytokine IL-10 was increased (p<0.001). Conclusion AE attenuated bleomycin-induced collagen deposition, inflammation and cytokines accumulation in the lungs of mice with a predominately Th2-background suggesting that therapeutic AE (15-44 days post injury) attenuates the pro-inflammatory, Th2 immune response and fibrosis in the bleomycin model
CARACTERÍSTICAS DA PAISAGEM PARA AUXILIAR NO PLANEJAMENTO E MANEJO DOS RECURSOS NATURAIS NA MICROBACIA DO RIO TUCUNARÉ, AMAZÔNIA OCIDENTAL, BRASIL
The identification of landscape characteristics helps the planning and management of natural resources, making decision-making easier and more efficient for the sustainable development of the region. The objective of this work was to provide information about the landscape characteristics of the Tucunaré river microbasin. The information was obtained through remote sensing, using free software and satellite images. The Tucunaré river microbasin has an area of 52.98 km2, perimeter of 37.27 km, elongated shape, altitudes of 287 to 571 m, predominance of wavy and smooth-wavy reliefs, predominance of area with low influence on the spread of fires and very apt for agricultural mechanization, 6th order dendritic drainage pattern, 15.16 springs km-2, drainage density of 4.33 km km-2, maintenance coefficient of 230.8 m2 m-1, sinuosity index of 55.66% and concentration time of 3.88 h. In the period of 34 years (1984 to 2022), there was a large reduction in the area of native forest in the microbasin (65.25% to 25.58% of the total area) and in the riparian zone (61.56% to 30.35% of the total area), compromising the sustainable development of the region. It is concluded that the microbasin has potential for the development of agricultural activities, however, it is necessary to adopt a series of measures to reduce the impact of these activities on natural resources, including the adoption of conservation practices in production systems and the recovery of native vegetation in the areas protected by law (eg. riparian zone).La identificación de las características del paisaje ayuda a la planificación y gestión de los recursos naturales, haciendo que la toma de decisiones sea más fácil y eficiente para el desarrollo sostenible de la región. MECANISMOS FISIOLÓGICOS E FISIOPATOLÓGICOS DETERMINANTES DA ATIVIDADE VASOMOTORA SIMPÁTICA
The sympathetic vasomotor activity is one of determinants of blood pressure (BP). Understanding the mechanisms involved in the control of the cardiovascular system is important in physiological and pathophysiological condition. The principal sympathetic premotor brain nuclei are confined in the paraventricular nucleus of hypothalamus (PVN) and in the rostralventrolateral medulla (RVLM). In different patophysiological condition, there is an increase in the sympathetic vasomotor tone, in part due to an increase in the activity of the PVN and RVLM neurons. In this brief review, we discussed the major mechanisms of sympathetic activation in different experimental models: 1) renovascular hypertension, 2) renoprival hypertension, 3) cardiac failure, 4) hypertension induced by nitric oxide blockade, 5) obesity and 6) gender differences. The actions of different mediators in the PVN and in the RVLM acting in long term, can change the level of sympathetic nerve activity and blood pressure and therefore, contributing for the progression of cardiovascular disease.
The search for environmental preservation and conservation of natural resources, motivated by
the activities harmful to the environment associated with the construction industry, makes new
concepts and technical solutions viable for sustainable development. The genesis of the present
work derives precisely from the lack of financial resources that characterize the current
economic situation of brazilian universities, together with the growing demand for repairs in
the Federal University of Juiz de Fora buildings: to use the large amount of concrete waste
generated and deposited in areas of the Campus replacing natural aggregates in the production
of pervious concrete, which, in turn, represents an excellent artifice in the fight against the
phenomenon of urban surface waterproofing. There are numerous benefits of using permeable
coatings in paving: reduce runoff; temporarily storing the surplus water, relieving the drainage
system; to feed the underground aquifer and recover the soil filtration capacity; in addition to
presenting lower life cycle cost in detriment to other conventional materials. This research
involves the pioneering assessment about the influence of the use of these recycled waste in
replacement to 100% of the conventional aggregate of stone origin in the mechanical and
hydraulic behavior of the pervious concrete by means of tests recommended by ABNT NBR
16416: 2015, without the use of additives. For that, a dosage study was carried out to determine
the most suitable trait for the preparation of the drainage composite as a floor, and it was hoped
to obtain a material in accordance with the normative requirements of resistance and
permeability, from technically feasible procedures. All the permeability coefficients obtained
in the laboratory exceeded the normative limit of 0.1 cm/s, reaching values of up to 2.36 cm/s.
Likewise, average compressive strength values of the test pieces close to the limit of 20 MPa
stipulated by the standard (23.98 MPa and 19.57 MPa for 60 mm and 80 mm pieces
respectively) were obtained and the flexural tensile strength was also observed: mean of 2.08
MPa, higher than the recommended minimum (2 MPa). In view of the favorable outlook, the
final products can be manufactured in series by the institution and used in the maintenance of
the Campus areas, directly and indirectly reducing the expenses associated with the construction
waste and the waterproofing of the urban pavements.
A gênese
Do
Development of optimized compressed earth blocks based on circular economy concepts
With the growing concern in adopting more sustainable technical solutions, interest in earth as a construction material has been renewed. This work has as main objective to evaluate the mechanical behavior of CEBs from the incorporation of waste and industrial by-products without neglecting their termal performance and durability. In this context, the incorporation of CDW will be studied in order to contribute to the implementation of the circular economy in the construction sector
2302 Review and analysis of existing methods to assess the Indoor Environmental Quality (IEQ) for office buildings
Population in developed countries spend most of their time indoors, whether in their homes, workplaces, stores or leisure areas. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, this situation worsened and now, more than ever, the importance of a high Indoor Environmental Quality (IEQ) is highlighted. The IEQ is very important in building performance since it is directly related to its occupants’ comfort, health, wellbeing, and productivity and the Sick Building Syndrome (SBS) concept. Therefore, it is essential to develop tools to support designers’ decision-making in the materialization of indoor environments with higher quality. From the state-of-art analysis, it is possible to conclude that the methods to assess the overall building performance already consider the IEQ. Still, most use an approach that does not cover all relevant indicators. In this context, this paper presents the first milestone of a research work that aims to develop a new method to rate the overall IEQ of office buildings in Portugal. The main objective of the present study is to propose a list of IEQ indicators for office buildings, adapted to the Portuguese context, based on the analysis of existing rating methods for buildings and the recommendations of national and international standards
