Gewerkschaften und undokumentierte Arbeit von Migrant_innen in Österreich: über die Entstehung gewerkschaftlicher Beratungs- und Unterstützungsstrukturen
Gewerkschaften vertreten in Bezug auf Migration und die Unterstützung von Migrant_innen mitunter widersprüchliche Positionen. In Österreich sahen sie sich historisch mit unterschiedlichen Dilemmata konfrontiert. Dabei verfolgten sie in der Vergangenheit oftmals restriktive Ansätze. Allerdings ist gerade innerhalb der letzten Jahre auch ein Wandel der Positionen zu beobachten. Das äußert sich unter anderem darin, dass die Gewerkschaften nicht mehr nur Migration im Hinblick auf Lohn- und Sozialdumping problematisieren, sondern zunehmend auch die Folgen undokumentierter Arbeit für Migrant_innen selbst thematisieren. Mit dem Versuch, Beratungs- und Unterstützungsstrukturen, die auch Anleihen bei US-amerikanischen Worker Centers nehmen, in den Gewerkschaften zu verankern, sind jedoch auch neue Herausforderungen verbunden. Der Artikel zeigt, dass sich mit Hilfe von internen und externen Akteur_innen in den Gewerkschaften unterstützende Ansätze in Gestalt der UNDOK-Anlaufstelle etablieren konnten.How trade unions engage migrants and position themselves in regards to immigration is disputed and contested. While historically trade unions in Austria have faced dilemmas in dealing with migrants and undocumented work, they have recently started to engage new strategies. In the past, trade unions in Austria have often held restrictive positions in regards to immigration and foreign labour. However, over the last couple of years they have changed their position. Trade unions have started to refrain from discussing only the negative aspects of wage dumping and have begun to recognise the negative consequences of undocumented work on immigrants. While trying to implement organising approaches similar to working centres in the United States, Austrian trade unions face various challenges. This paper argues that with the help of actors inside and outside of trade unions, other positions and projects have been able to establish themselves. This has culminated in the emergence of a support structure, namely an advice centre, which acts as a physical manifestation of change implemented in the union structures
The nuclear envelope localization of DYT1 dystonia torsinA-ΔE requires the SUN1 LINC complex component
<p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>DYT1 dystonia is an autosomal dominant neurological condition caused by a mutation that removes a single glutamic acid residue (ΔE) from the torsinA (torA) AAA+ protein. TorA appears to possess a nuclear envelope (NE) localized activity that requires Lamina-Associated-Polypeptide 1 (LAP1), which is an inner nuclear membrane localized torA-binding partner. Although hypoactive, the DYT1 dystonia torA-ΔE isoform often concentrates in the NE, suggesting that torA-ΔE also interacts with an NE-localized binding partner.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>We confirm that NE-localized torA-ΔE does not co-immunoprecipitate with LAP1, and find that torA-ΔE continues to concentrate in the NE of cells that lack LAP1. Instead, we find that variability in torA-ΔE localization correlates with the presence of the SUN-domain and Nesprin proteins that assemble into the LINC complex. We also find that siRNA depletion of SUN1, but not other LINC complex components, removes torA-ΔE from the NE. In contrast, the LAP1-dependent NE-accumulation of an ATP-locked torA mutant is unaffected by loss of LINC complex proteins. This SUN1 dependent torA-ΔE localization requires the torA membrane association domain, as well as a putative substrate-interaction residue, Y147, neither of which are required for torA interaction with LAP1. We also find that mutation of these motifs, or depletion of SUN1, decreases the amount of torA-WT that colocalizes with NE markers, indicating that each also underlies a normal NE-localized torA binding interaction.</p> <p>Conclusions</p> <p>These data suggest that the disease causing ΔE mutation promotes an association between torA and SUN1 that is distinct to the interaction between LAP1 and ATP-bound torA. This evidence for two NE-localized binding partners suggests that torA may act on multiple substrates and/or possesses regulatory co-factor partners. In addition, finding that the DYT1 mutation causes abnormal association with SUN1 implicates LINC complex dysfunction in DYT1 dystonia pathogenesis, and suggests a gain-of-function activity contributes to this dominantly inherited disease.</p
Observation of the Anomalous Hall Effect in a Collinear Antiferromagnet
Time-reversal symmetry breaking is the basic physics concept underpinning
many magnetic topological phenomena such as the anomalous Hall effect (AHE) and
its quantized variant. The AHE has been primarily accompanied by a
ferromagnetic dipole moment, which hinders the topological quantum states and
limits data density in memory devices, or by a delicate noncollinear magnetic
order with strong spin decoherence, both limiting their applicability. A
potential breakthrough is the recent theoretical prediction of the AHE arising
from collinear antiferromagnetism in an anisotropic crystal environment. This
new mechanism does not require magnetic dipolar or noncollinear fields.
However, it has not been experimentally observed to date. Here we demonstrate
this unconventional mechanism by measuring the AHE in an epilayer of a rutile
collinear antiferromagnet RuO. The observed anomalous Hall conductivity is
large, exceeding 300 S/cm, and is in agreement with the Berry phase topological
transport contribution. Our results open a new unexplored chapter of
time-reversal symmetry breaking phenomena in the abundant class of collinear

Solvation free energy profile of the SCN- ion across the water-1,2-dichloroethane liquid/liquid interface. A computer simulation study
The solvation free energy profile of a single SCN- ion is calculated across the water-1,2-dichloroethane liquid/liquid interface at 298 K by the constraint force method. The obtained results show that the free energy cost of transferring the ion from the aqueous to the organic phase is about 70 kJ/mol, The free energy profile shows a small but clear well at the aqueous side of the interface, in the subsurface region of the water phase, indicating the ability of the SCN- ion to be adsorbed in the close vicinity of the interface. Upon entrance of the SCN- ion to the organic phase a coextraction of the water molecules of its first hydration shell occurs. Accordingly, when it is located at the boundary of the two phases the SCN- ion prefers orientations in which its bulky S atom is located at the aqueous side, and the small N atom, together with its first hydration shell, at the organic side of the interface
Upper limits on the strength of periodic gravitational waves from PSR J1939+2134
The first science run of the LIGO and GEO gravitational wave detectors
presented the opportunity to test methods of searching for gravitational waves
from known pulsars. Here we present new direct upper limits on the strength of
waves from the pulsar PSR J1939+2134 using two independent analysis methods,
one in the frequency domain using frequentist statistics and one in the time
domain using Bayesian inference. Both methods show that the strain amplitude at

Improving the sensitivity to gravitational-wave sources by modifying the input-output optics of advanced interferometers
We study frequency dependent (FD) input-output schemes for signal-recycling
interferometers, the baseline design of Advanced LIGO and the current
configuration of GEO 600. Complementary to a recent proposal by Harms et al. to
use FD input squeezing and ordinary homodyne detection, we explore a scheme
which uses ordinary squeezed vacuum, but FD readout. Both schemes, which are
sub-optimal among all possible input-output schemes, provide a global noise
suppression by the power squeeze factor, while being realizable by using
detuned Fabry-Perot cavities as input/output filters. At high frequencies, the
two schemes are shown to be equivalent, while at low frequencies our scheme
gives better performance than that of Harms et al., and is nearly fully
optimal. We then study the sensitivity improvement achievable by these schemes
in Advanced LIGO era (with 30-m filter cavities and current estimates of
filter-mirror losses and thermal noise), for neutron star binary inspirals, and
for narrowband GW sources such as low-mass X-ray binaries and known radio
pulsars. Optical losses are shown to be a major obstacle for the actual
implementation of these techniques in Advanced LIGO. On time scales of
third-generation interferometers, like EURO/LIGO-III (~2012), with
kilometer-scale filter cavities, a signal-recycling interferometer with the FD
readout scheme explored in this paper can have performances comparable to

Guidelines and Recommendations on Yeast Cell Death Nomenclature
Elucidating the biology of yeast in its full complexity has major implications for science, medicine and industry. One of the most critical processes determining yeast life and physiology is cellular demise. However, the investigation of yeast cell death is a relatively young field, and a widely accepted set of concepts and terms is still missing. Here, we propose unified criteria for the definition of accidental, regulated, and programmed forms of cell death in yeast based on a series of morphological and biochemical criteria. Specifically, we provide consensus guidelines on the differential definition of terms including apoptosis, regulated necrosis, and autophagic cell death, as we refer to additional cell death routines that are relevant for the biology of (at least some species of) yeast. As this area of investigation advances rapidly, changes and extensions to this set of recommendations will be implemented in the years to come. Nonetheless, we strongly encourage the authors, reviewers and editors of scientific articles to adopt these collective standards in order to establish an accurate framework for yeast cell death research and, ultimately, to accelerate the progress of this vibrant field of research
Prediction of Dementia in Primary Care Patients
BACKGROUND: Current approaches for AD prediction are based on biomarkers, which are however of restricted availability in primary care. AD prediction tools for primary care are therefore needed. We present a prediction score based on information that can be obtained in the primary care setting. METHODOLOGY/PRINCIPAL FINDINGS: We performed a longitudinal cohort study in 3.055 non-demented individuals above 75 years recruited via primary care chart registries (Study on Aging, Cognition and Dementia, AgeCoDe). After the baseline investigation we performed three follow-up investigations at 18 months intervals with incident dementia as the primary outcome. The best set of predictors was extracted from the baseline variables in one randomly selected half of the sample. This set included age, subjective memory impairment, performance on delayed verbal recall and verbal fluency, on the Mini-Mental-State-Examination, and on an instrumental activities of daily living scale. These variables were aggregated to a prediction score, which achieved a prediction accuracy of 0.84 for AD. The score was applied to the second half of the sample (test cohort). Here, the prediction accuracy was 0.79. With a cut-off of at least 80% sensitivity in the first cohort, 79.6% sensitivity, 66.4% specificity, 14.7% positive predictive value (PPV) and 97.8% negative predictive value of (NPV) for AD were achieved in the test cohort. At a cut-off for a high risk population (5% of individuals with the highest risk score in the first cohort) the PPV for AD was 39.1% (52% for any dementia) in the test cohort. CONCLUSIONS: The prediction score has useful prediction accuracy. It can define individuals (1) sensitively for low cost-low risk interventions, or (2) more specific and with increased PPV for measures of prevention with greater costs or risks. As it is independent of technical aids, it may be used within large scale prevention programs
