Almost invariant half-spaces for operators on Hilbert space. II: operator matrices

This paper is a sequel to [6]. In that paper we transferred the discussions in [1] and [13] concerning almost invariant half-spaces for operators on complex Banach spaces to the context of operators on Hilbert space, and we gave easier proofs of the main results in [1] and [13]. In the present paper we discuss consequences of the above-mentioned results for the matricial structure of operators on Hilbert space

Coherence and Consistency in Domains (Extended Outline)

Almost all of the categories normally used as a mathematical foundation for denotational semantics satisfy a condition known as consistent completeness. The goal of this paper is to explore the possibility of using a different condition - that of coherence - which has its origins in topology and logic. In particular, we concentrate on those posets whose principal ideals are algebraic lattices and whose topologies are coherent. These form a cartesian closed category which has fixed points for domain equations. It is shown that a universal domain exists. Since the construction of this domain seems to be of general significance, a categorical treatment is provided and its relationship to other applications discussed

D-π-D chromophores based on dithieno[3,2-b:2′,3'-d]thiophene (DTT) : potential application in the fabrication of solar cell

In this work, four stable dithieno[3,2-b:2′,3'-d]thiophene-based π-extended molecules were designed and synthesized via a Pd-catalysed Sonogashira coupling reaction. The structures of these symmetrical compounds, including dithieno[3,2-b:2′,3'-d]thiophene (DTT) as the π-center and various donor (D) groups, were determined on the basis of NMR spectral data, elemental analysis, and X-ray crystallography. The photo-physical properties of the DTT-based derivatives 2 were fully investigated in both solution and solid state. The notable optical features of their solid-state powders showed significant red-shift in comparison with the luminescence of their dilute dichloromethane solutions. These results combined with the theoretical calculations indicate that they are promising candidates for the several applications in electronic and optoelectronic devices, as well as organic dyes for solar cells

Topographic signatures and manipulations of Fe atoms, CO molecules and NaCl islands on superconducting Pb(111)

Topological superconductivity emerging in one- or two-dimensional hybrid materials is predicted as a key ingredient for quantum computing. However, not only the design of complex heterostructures is primordial for future applications but also the characterization of their electronic and structural properties at the atomic scale using the most advanced scanning probe microscopy techniques with functionalized tips. We report on the topographic signatures observed by scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) of carbon monoxide (CO) molecules, iron (Fe) atoms and sodium chloride (NaCl) islands deposited on superconducting Pb(111). For the CO adsorption a comparison with the Pb(110) substrate is demonstrated. We show a general propensity of these adsorbates to diffuse at low temperature under gentle scanning conditions. Our findings provide new insights into high-resolution probe microscopy imaging with terminated tips, decoupling atoms and molecules by NaCl islands or tip-induced lateral manipulation of iron atoms on top of the prototypical Pb(111) superconducting surface

Do words matter? Consumers’ perceptions of words used to describe restaurant menu items

INTRODUCTION: The menu is an integral component of a restaurant’s core strategy (McCall & Lynn, 2008). Menus are used to describe dishes to help consumers understand potential ingredients, textures, and tastes (Kincaid & Corsun, 2003). Analogous to speeches by professional speakers, a menu requires carefully chosen words to make it exciting and memorable (Bowen & Morris, 1995). Menu descriptions build a mental image of the food prior to consumption, which can influence consumers’ decision-making process (Drysdale & Galipue, 2008). Subsequently, the congruency of this mental image with customer expectation drives selection behavior (Lockyer, 2006). Given that menus are critical tools for marketing a restaurant meal, word selection and patterns must be carefully crafted in order to facilitate this communication. The menu serves several functions for both the restaurateur and the customer (McCall & Lynn, 2008). Practitioners and academic researchers alike agree that the menu is an important communicative tool, though how menu items should be described is still debatable. Mills and Thomas (2008) proposed the Customer Information Expectation of Restaurant Menu (CIERM) model, suggesting that menu effectiveness is affected by nutrition information, product information and availability of food preparation. Building upon the CIERM model, this study aims to examine consumers’ preferences over menu word choice based on current industry practice. This study could contribute to enriches the literature on menu word item descriptions by first examining current practices and then testing the effect of menu word choice on consumers’ choice.Accepted manuscrip
