Analysis of structural and functional brain networks
The brain is a representative example of a network. It consists of numerous spatially distributed regions that continuously exchange information through structural connections. In the past decade, an increasing number of studies have explored the brain network in both structural and functional aspects; they have begun to decipher complex brain wirings, as well as elucidate how the rich functionality emerges from this architecture. Based upon previous studies, this thesis addresses three critical gaps in the field. (I) Although it is known that the community structures of brain network are spatially overlapping, conventional studies have focused on grouping brain regions into communities such that each region belongs to only one community. Therefore, a recent “link community” concept was employed to disentangle those overlapping architectures. (II) Spatial independent component analysis (sICA) and k-means clustering are two representative data-driven algorithms used to analyze functional networks. However, it is still unclear how these two methods compare to each other in terms of their theoretical basis and biological relevance. Hence, the relationship between these two methods were investigated. (III) Despite the multi-scale functional organization of the brain, previous studies have primarily examined the large-scale networks of the entire brain. Complex neural activity patterns in relatively smaller spatial scales have been poorly understood. Therefore, the fine-scale spatiotemporal patterns within visual cortex were explored. The distinguishing results obtained in this study may provide new insights regarding the brain\u27s organization, as well as a better understanding of mathematical and statistical tools for functional and structural network analysis
Near-field spectroscopy of bimodal size distribution of InAs/AlGaAs quantum dots
We report on high-resolution photoluminescence (PL) spectroscopy of spatial
structure of InAs/AlGaAs quantum dots (QDs) by using a near-field scanning
optical microscope (NSOM). The double-peaked distribution of PL spectra is
clearly observed, which is associated with the bimodal size distribution of
single QDs. In particular, the size difference of single QDs, represented by
the doublet spectral distribution, can be directly observed by the NSOM images

Contextual Linear Bandits under Noisy Features: Towards Bayesian Oracles
We study contextual linear bandit problems under uncertainty on features;
they are noisy with missing entries. To address the challenges from the noise,
we analyze Bayesian oracles given observed noisy features. Our Bayesian
analysis finds that the optimal hypothesis can be far from the underlying
realizability function, depending on noise characteristics, which is highly
non-intuitive and does not occur for classical noiseless setups. This implies
that classical approaches cannot guarantee a non-trivial regret bound. We thus
propose an algorithm aiming at the Bayesian oracle from observed information
under this model, achieving regret bound with respect to
feature dimension and time horizon . We demonstrate the proposed
algorithm using synthetic and real-world datasets.Comment: 30 page
Progressive Processing of Continuous Range Queries in Hierarchical Wireless Sensor Networks
In this paper, we study the problem of processing continuous range queries in
a hierarchical wireless sensor network. Contrasted with the traditional
approach of building networks in a "flat" structure using sensor devices of the
same capability, the hierarchical approach deploys devices of higher capability
in a higher tier, i.e., a tier closer to the server. While query processing in
flat sensor networks has been widely studied, the study on query processing in
hierarchical sensor networks has been inadequate. In wireless sensor networks,
the main costs that should be considered are the energy for sending data and
the storage for storing queries. There is a trade-off between these two costs.
Based on this, we first propose a progressive processing method that
effectively processes a large number of continuous range queries in
hierarchical sensor networks. The proposed method uses the query merging
technique proposed by Xiang et al. as the basis and additionally considers the
trade-off between the two costs. More specifically, it works toward reducing
the storage cost at lower-tier nodes by merging more queries, and toward
reducing the energy cost at higher-tier nodes by merging fewer queries (thereby
reducing "false alarms"). We then present how to build a hierarchical sensor
network that is optimal with respect to the weighted sum of the two costs. It
allows for a cost-based systematic control of the trade-off based on the
relative importance between the storage and energy in a given network
environment and application. Experimental results show that the proposed method
achieves a near-optimal control between the storage and energy and reduces the
cost by 0.989~84.995 times compared with the cost achieved using the flat
(i.e., non-hierarchical) setup as in the work by Xiang et al.Comment: 41 pages, 20 figure

Monitoring of multi-frequency polarization of gamma-ray bright AGNs
We started two observing programs with the Korean VLBI Network (KVN)
monitoring changes in the flux density and polarization of relativistic jets in
gamma-ray bright AGNs simultaneously at 22, 43, 86, 129 GHz. One is a
single-dish weekly-observing program in dual polarization with KVN 21-m
diameter radio telescopes beginning in 2011 May. The other is a VLBI
monthly-observing program with the three-element VLBI network at an angular
resolution range of 1.0--9.2 mas beginning in 2012 December. The monitoring
observations aim to study correlation of variability in gamma-ray with that in
radio flux density and polarization of relativistic jets when they flare up.
These observations enable us to study the origin of the gamma-ray flares of

Proto-type installation of a double-station system for the optical-video-detection and orbital characterisation of a meteor/fireball in South Korea
We give a detailed description of the installation and operation of a
double-station meteor detection system which formed part of a research &
education project between Korea Astronomy Space Science Institute and Daejeon
Science Highschool. A total of six light-sensitive CCD cameras were installed
with three cameras at SOAO and three cameras at BOAO observatory. A
double-station observation of a meteor event enables the determination of the
three-dimensional orbit in space. This project was initiated in response to the
Jinju fireball event in March 2014. The cameras were installed in
October/November 2014. The two stations are identical in hardware as well as
software. Each station employes sensitive Watec-902H2 cameras in combination
with relatively fast f/1.2 lenses. Various fields of views were used for
measuring differences in detection rates of meteor events. We employed the
SonotaCo UFO software suite for meteor detection and their subsequent analysis.
The system setup as well as installation/operation experience is described and
first results are presented. We also give a brief overview of historic as well
