This paper examines, using micro-data on the expenditures of Canadian households for 1978 and 1982, how their income, their size and make-up, their labour force participation, their place of residence and other sociodemographic characteristics (age, schooling, language, âŠ) explain their expenditures on fourteen aggregates (food at home, housing, clothing âŠ). The results show that economic factors such as the life cycle and the scarcity of time allow us to explain these expenditures

Combining transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation with therapeutic exercise to reduce pain in an elderly population: a pilot study
Purpose: Chronic pain is a highly prevalent and debilitating condition, and there is a pressing need to find safe, effective and affordable treatments to tackle this public health issue. This pilot study aimed to assess whether therapeutic exercises supplemented by transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation induces a greater hypoalgesic effect than therapeutic exercises supplemented by sham transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation, in an elderly population suffering from chronic pain. Materials and methods: Eighteen elderly participants suffering from chronic pain completed a therapeutic exercise program consisting of 45-min group sessions administered twice a week for 4 weeks. Half of the participants received real transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation during the exercise sessions, while the others received sham transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation. Participants completed pain questionnaires (McGill Pain Questionnaire, Brief Pain Inventory, Beck Depression Index) before and after the intervention, and recorded their pain levels on an 11-point numerical rating scale before and after each session (Clinical Trial.Gov ID: NCT02445677).
Results and conclusion: Our results suggest that supplementing exercise sessions with transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation does not improve the long-term outcomes of elderly patients suffering from chronic pain, but does induce short-term hypoalgesia during exercise sessions. Our study also offers valuable guidelines for the implementation of a future and adequately powered study looking at this research

Progressive Resistance Exercise and Parkinson's Disease: A Review of Potential Mechanisms
This paper reviews the therapeutically beneficial effects of progressive resistance exercise (PRE) on Parkinson's disease (PD). First, this paper discusses the rationale for PRE in PD. Within the first section, the review discusses the central mechanisms that underlie bradykinesia and muscle weakness, highlights findings related to the central changes that accompany PRE in healthy individuals, and extends these findings to individuals with PD. It then illustrates the hypothesized positive effects of PRE on nigro-striatal-thalamo-cortical activation and connectivity. Second, it reviews recent findings of the use of PRE in individuals with PD. Finally, knowledge gaps of using PRE on individuals with PD are discussed along with suggestions for future research
Clinical Study A Randomized Trial Assessing the Effectiveness of Ezetimibe in South Asian Canadians with Coronary Artery Disease or Diabetes: The INFINITY Study
Background. There is a paucity of data regarding the effectiveness and safety of lipid-lowering treatments among South-Asian patients. Methods. Sixty-four South-Asian Canadians with coronary artery disease or diabetes and persistent hypercholesterolemia on statin therapy, were randomized to ezetimibe 10 mg/day co-administered with statin therapy (EZE + Statin) or doubling their current statin dose (STAT 2 ). Primary outcome was the proportion of patients achieving target LDL-C (<2.0 mmol/L) after 6 weeks. Secondary outcomes included the change in lipid profile and the incidence of treatment-emergent adverse events through 12 weeks. Exploratory markers for vascular inflammation were assessed at baseline and 12 weeks. Results. At 6 weeks, the primary outcome was significantly higher among the EZE + Statin patients (68% versus 36%; P = 0.031) with an OR (95% CI) of 3.97 (1.19, 13.18) upon accounting for baseline LDL-C and adjusting for age. At 12 weeks, 76% of EZE + Statin patients achieved target LDL-C compared to 48% (P = 0.047) of the STAT 2 patients (adjusted OR (95% CI) = 3.31 (1.01,10.89)). No significant between-group differences in exploratory markers were observed with the exception of CRP. Conclusions. Patients receiving ezetimibe and statin were more likely to achieve target LDL-C after 6 and 12 weeks compared to patients doubling their statin dose. Ezetimibe/statin combination therapy was well tolerated among this cohort of South-Asian Canadians, without safety concerns
A systematic review and meta-analysis of the effect of dispatcher-assisted CPR on outcomes from sudden cardiac arrest in adults and children
Background: Dispatcher-assisted cardiopulmonary resuscitation (DA-CPR) has been reported in individual studies to significantly increase the rate of bystander CPR and survival from cardiac arrest. Methods: We undertook a systematic review and meta-analysis to evaluate the impact of DA-CPR programs on key clinical outcomes following out-of-hospital cardiac arrest. We searched the PubMED, EMBASE, CINAHL, ERIC and Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials databases from inception until July 2018. Eligible studies compared systems with and without dispatcher-assisted CPR programs. The results of included studies were classified into 3 categories for the purposes of more accurate analysis: comparison of outcomes in systems with DA-CPR programs, case-based comparison of DA-CPR to bystander CPR, and case-based comparisons of DA-CPR to no CPR before EMS arrival. The GRADE system was used to assess certainty of evidence at an outcome level. We used random-effects models to produce summary effect sizes across all outcomes. Results: Of 5531 citations screened, 33 studies were eligible for inclusion. All included studies were observational. Evidence certainty across all outcomes was assessed as low or very low. In system-level and patient-level comparisons, the provision of DA-CPR compared with no DA-CPR was consistently associated with improved outcome across all analyses. Comparison of DA-CPR to bystander CPR produced conflicting results. Findings were consistent across sensitivity analyses and the pediatric sub-group. Conclusion: These results support the recommendation that dispatchers provide CPR instructions to callers for adults and children with suspected OHCA. Review registration: PROSPERO- CRD42018091427
