This article discusses the results of PISA 2009 from seven Asian countries. The analysis focuses on three hubs of educational inequality: academic inequalities, inequalities by gender and social inequalities. The main conclusion drawn from the results of this work is that is not possible to affirm that Asian education systems constitute a homogeneous educational model

In times of crisis it is good and necessary reflecting on some basic elements of our profession and to take this opportunity to relate the different actors who are constructing our daily discipline. On the one hand, the academic side, this includes professors who are responsible for teaching and research, and students, who are the future of the profession. On the other hand, the professional world comprising the heads of government and social institutions that provides social services and social welfare, and the professionals who carry out their functions. From the relationship between this set of stakeholders arise difficulties and possibilities. It is essential that the Social Work make a set of approaches that turn their threats into opportunities and strengthen our contribution to society.</p

The chronicity within the framework of the social services: contributions for its discussion

In this article we are starting from a research work in progress which is carried out in the social services of a Spanish municipality about the population in situations of chronicity. On the basis of that research we want to point out a set of contributions on this phenomenon and the context in which it occurs. Firstly, we suggest the desirability of making a theoretical effort to provide content to the term chronicity, since this is a concept too empty within the social sphere, and therefore it has little technical value. As a hypothesis, we propose its use as a conceptual category, in order to integrate the various manifestations and typologies associated with the phenomenon. Then, we take into account the treatment of chronicity in the field of health, and we underline the interest in certain proactive lines of work, whose guidelines can be significant for the social sphere. Finally, we support the need to deepen on the scientific basis of the interventions that take place within the social services - in this case regarding the phenomenon of chronicity - as a strategic way which enable to overcome the reactive dominant actions in this field.Departamento de Trabajo Social y Servicios Sociales; Facultad de Trabajo Socia

An Eight-Gene Blood Expression Profile Predicts the Response to Infliximab in Rheumatoid Arthritis

BACKGROUND: TNF alpha blockade agents like infliximab are actually the treatment of choice for those rheumatoid arthritis (RA) patients who fail standard therapy. However, a considerable percentage of anti-TNF alpha treated patients do not show a significant clinical response. Given that new therapies for treatment of RA have been recently approved, there is a pressing need to find a system that reliably predicts treatment response. We hypothesized that the analysis of whole blood gene expression profiles of RA patients could be used to build a robust predictor to infliximab therapy. METHODS AND FINDINGS: We performed microarray gene expression analysis on whole blood RNA samples from RA patients starting infliximab therapy (n = 44). The clinical response to infliximab was determined at week 14 using the EULAR criteria. Blood cell populations were determined using flow cytometry at baseline, week 2 and week 14 of treatment. Using complete cross-validation and repeated random sampling we identified a robust 8-gene predictor model (96.6% Leave One Out prediction accuracy, P = 0.0001). Applying this model to an independent validation set of RA patients, we estimated an 85.7% prediction accuracy (75-100%, 95% CI). In parallel, we also observed a significantly higher number of CD4+CD25+ cells (i.e. regulatory T cells) in the responder group compared to the non responder group at baseline (P = 0.0009). CONCLUSIONS: The present 8-gene model obtained from whole blood expression efficiently predicts response to infliximab in RA patients. The application of the present system in the clinical setting could assist the clinician in the selection of the optimal treatment strategy in RA
