Effective spin chains for fractional quantum Hall states
Fractional quantum Hall (FQH) states are topologically ordered which
indicates that their essential properties are insensitive to smooth
deformations of the manifold on which they are studied. Their microscopic
Hamiltonian description, however, strongly depends on geometrical details.
Recent work has shown how this dependence can be exploited to generate
effective models that are both interesting in their own right and also provide
further insight into the quantum Hall system. We review and expand on recent
efforts to understand the FQH system close to the solvable thin-torus limit in
terms of effective spin chains. In particular, we clarify how the difference
between the bosonic and fermionic FQH states, which is not apparent in the
thin-torus limit, can be seen at this level. Additionally, we discuss the
relation of the Haldane-Shastry chain to the so-called QH circle limit and
comment on its significance to recent entanglement studies.Comment: 6 pages, 5 figures. Written for a Special Issue on Foundations of

Link between the hierarchy of fractional quantum Hall states and Haldane's conjecture for quantum spin chains
We study a strong coupling expansion of the fractional quantum Hall
state away from the Tao-Thouless limit and show that the leading quantum
fluctuations lead to an effective spin-1 Hamiltonian that lacks parity
symmetry. By analyzing the energetics, discrete symmetries of low-lying
excitations, and string order parameters, we demonstrate that the
fractional quantum Hall state is adiabatically connected to both Haldane and
large- phases, and is characterized by a string order parameter which is
dual to the ordinary one. This result indicates a close relation between (a
generalized form of) the Haldane conjecture for spin chains and the fractional
quantum Hall effect.Comment: 8 pages, 9 figure
Condensate-induced transitions and critical spin chains
We show that condensate-induced transitions between two-dimensional
topological phases provide a general framework to relate one-dimensional spin
models at their critical points. We demonstrate this using two examples. First,
we show that two well-known spin chains, namely the XY chain and the transverse
field Ising chain with only next-nearest-neighbor interactions, differ at their
critical points only by a non-local boundary term and can be related via an
exact mapping. The boundary term constrains the set of possible boundary
conditions of the transverse field Ising chain, reducing the number of primary
fields in the conformal field theory that describes its critical behavior. We
argue that the reduction of the field content is equivalent to the confinement
of a set of primary fields, in precise analogy to the confinement of
quasiparticles resulting from a condensation of a boson in a topological phase.
As the second example we show that when a similar confining boundary term is
applied to the XY chain with only next-nearest-neighbor interactions, the
resulting system can be mapped to a local spin chain with the u(1)_2 x u(1)_2
critical behavior predicted by the condensation framework.Comment: 5 pages, 1 figure; v2: several minor textual change
Comparison of Sedentary Time Between Thigh-Worn and Wrist-Worn Accelerometers
Background: The accuracy of wrist-worn accelerometers in identifying sedentary time has been scarcely studied in free-living conditions. The aim of this study was to compare daily sedentary time estimates between a thigh-worn accelerometer, which measured sitting and lying postures, and a wrist-worn accelerometer, which measured low levels of movement. Methods: The study population consisted of 259 participants (Mage = 62.8 years, SD = 0.9) from the Finnish Retirement and Aging Study (FIREA). Participants wore an Axivity AX3 accelerometeron their mid-thigh and an Actigraph wActiSleep-BT accelerometer on their non-dominant wrist simultaneously for a minimum of 4 days in free-living conditions. Two definitions to estimate daily sedentary time were used for data from the wrist-worn accelerometer: 1) the count cutpoint, ≤1853 counts per minute; and 2) the Euclidean Norm Minus One (ENMO) cutpoint, </p
Students’ perceptions of learning management systems. An explorative case study of upper secondary school students
IT has for a time been a part of the everyday life in schools. Learning management (LMS) system is intended to help students by facilitating learning and communication. While the systems employ a variety of functions and benefits they also present challenges to the individual student. Results from prior research indicate that these systems are often underutilised or unable to deliver desired effects by failing to comply with the user’s expectations and needs. The purpose of this study was to gain insights into how learning management systems are perceived by students in upper secondary school. Ten students were interviewed to identify factors influencing student perceptions of LMS. Our findings indicated that student’s perceptions are affected by sociological and technological factors. Yet, despite the system limitations, students can adopt the system if it can correspond with the student’s unique learning expectancies
Monihiukkastilat ja vaihepyörteet alimmalla Landaun tasolla
Tässä työssä tutkitaan kaksiulotteisen, vahvasti korreloituneen elektronisysteemin stationäärisiä ominaisuuksia matalan lämpötilan rajalla.
Tutkimus keskittyy äärellisen systeemin energeettisesti alimpien ominaistilojen käyttäytymiseen ulkoisen magneettikentän funktiona.
Työssä rajoitutaan parametrialueelle, jossa ulkoinen kenttä on riittävän voimakas ja ns. alimman Landaun tason approksimaatio pätevä.
Approksimaation puitteissa on mahdollista ratkaista Hamiltonin operaattorin ominaisarvoyhtälö tarkasti.

Tuloksena on syntynyt sähköinen poikkeusolojen valmiussuunnitelma, näin poikkeusolojen valmiussuunnitelmaa on helppo jatkossa päivittää. Poikkeusolojen valmiussuunnitelma on otettu Selänteen peruspalvelu-kuntayhtymässä käyttöön, tätä pidämme oman työmme kannalta erinomaisena tuloksena.ABSTRACT
The law insists that every utilities district must have their own contingency plan for exceptional circumstances. Selänne utilities district did not have a common plan of their own earlier. Every municipality has their own contingency plan for exceptional circumstances. Our work was to unify these plans.
The contingency plan for exceptional circumstances includes guidelines for carrying out operations and tasks under exceptional circumstances, as well as staff job descriptions and task placement.
The Interior Ministry has laid out clear written instructions for the contingency plan. The instructions include a model of the plan, with specific instructions on what to include in it.
Starting point for our thesis was to create a new contingency plan for exceptional circumstance for the Selänne utilities district. The Selänne utilities district consists of municipalities of Haapajärvi, Kärsämäki, Pyhäjärvi and Reisjärvi. All these municipalities’ health care centres have different plans, because the utilities district was formed in the beginning of the year 2010.
The authors have done the contingency plan as a project work. The work was done in cooperation with the Selänne utilities district. The plan is classified information which is only meant to be used by authorities. Therefore, this work does not include the plan itself.
As a result of our work, we have done an electronic version of the contingency plan for exceptional circumstances for the Selänne utilities district. The Selänne task force favoured an electronic product, because the plan would then be easily upgradable later on. Our contingency plan has been taken into use, and we consider this an outstanding result of our word
