Quiet Moments: My Artistic Exploration
I believe that fate led me to dive into my artistic study on the human form. I firmly believe all things happen for a reason. Every year, every day, every hour, every minute, and every second of my life play a significant role in how things turn out. Looking back on the past two decades, there have been numerous accounts that have brought me to where I am today. The classes I have taken and the interactions with various artists have led me to pursue art, one of my strongest passions, and have influenced the development of my current collection of work, Quiet Moments
Garfield Todd: The End of the Liberal Dream in Rhodesia, by Susan Woodhouse (Harare: Weaver Press, 2018)
Susan Woodhouse spent 25 years writing this biographic book about Garfield Todd. Todd was the prime minister of Southern Rhodesia for five years from 1953 to 1958. The book is derived from the author’s memory of working for Todd for two years while he was in office. More importantly, the author gathered data for the book from archival research in Zimbabwe over a period of seven years
'Debating 'The Rediscovery of Liberalism' in Zambia: Responses to Harri Englund
In Africa 83(4) (November 2013), Harri Englund discussed several recent books on Zambia published preceding the country’s fiftieth independence anniversary. His article explored the ways in which recent publications by Zambian and Zambianist authors have launched a fresh research agenda, and he focused in particular on the scholarly engagement with liberalism. Below, we publish responses from David M.Gordon, Bizeck Jube Phiri and Giacomo Macola, whose work was discussed in this article, and a comment by James Ferguson on more scholarly directions
Expression of bacterial genes in transgenic tobacco: methods, applications and future prospects
Expression of bacterial genes in transgenic tobacco: methods, applications and future prospects
Tobacco is the most commonly used plant for expression of transgenes
from a variety of organisms, because it is easily grown and
transformed, it provides abundant amounts of fresh tissue and has a
well-established cell culture system. Many bacterial proteins involved
in the synthesis of commercial products are currently engineered for
production in tobacco. Bacterial enzymes synthesized in tobacco can
enhance protection against abiotic stresses and diseases, and provide a
system to test applied strategies such as phytoremediation. Examples of
bacterial gene expression in tobacco include production of antigen
proteins from several human bacterial pathogens as vaccines, bacterial
proteins for enhancing resistance against insects, pathogens and
herbicides, and bacterial enzymes for the production of polymers,
sugars, and bioethanol. Further improvements in the expression of
recombinant proteins and their recovery from tobacco will enhance
production and commercial use of these proteins. This review highlights
the dynamic use of tobacco in bacterial protein production by examining
the most relevant research in this field

Evaluation of the physical, chemical and microbiological parameters of the drinking water at the city of Caraz during the period August 2017-January 2018 [Evaluación de los parámetros físicos, químicos y microbiológicos del agua potable de la ciudad de Caraz durante el período agosto 2017-enero 2018]
The objective of the present investigation was to evaluate the main physicochemical and microbiological parameters of drinking water in the city of Caraz, located in the province of Huaylas, department of Ancash, during the period between August 2017 and January 2018. For this purpose, samples were taken at four points in the city, from the supply reservoir to the home distribution network. Twenty-three physical, chemical and microbiological parameters were analyzed: color, conductivity, total dissolved solids, total suspended solids, temperature, turbidity, residual chlorine, chlorides, total hardness, fluorides, nitrates, dissolved oxygen, pH, sulfates, arsenic, cadmium, copper, iron, manganese, mercury, lead, total coliforms and fecal coliforms. In determining the indicated parameters, standardized chemical analysis methods were used for each of them. Some analyzes were carried out in the same place (in situ) and others in the chemistry laboratory as well as in the environmental quality laboratory of UNASAM. The results obtained were contrasted with the maximum permissible limits (MPL) of the Regulation of Water Quality for Human Consumption (MINSA, 2010). Of the 23 parameters evaluated, 20 were below the MPL (maximum permissible limit), with the exception of mercury and total and fecal coliforms, whose certainty given by the method used did not allow us to affirm that the values obtained are within the MPL.El objetivo de la presente investigación fue evaluar los principales parámetros fisicoquímicos y microbiológicos del agua potable en la ciudad de Caraz, ubicada en la provincia de Huaylas, departamento de Áncash, durante el periodo comprendido entre agosto de 2017 y enero de 2018.
