    Non-adiabatic effects in long-pulse mixed-field orientation of a linear polar molecule

    We present a theoretical study of the impact of an electrostatic field combined with non-resonant linearly polarized laser pulses on the rotational dynamics of linear molecules. Within the rigid rotor approximation, we solve the time-dependent Schr\"odinger equation for several field configurations. Using the OCS molecule as prototype, the field-dressed dynamics is analyzed in detail for experimentally accessible static field strengths and laser pulses. Results for directional cosines are presented and compared to the predictions of the adiabatic theory. We demonstrate that for prototypical field configuration used in current mixed-field orientation experiments, the molecular field dynamics is, in general, non-adiabatic, being mandatory a time-dependent description of these systems. We investigate several field regimes identifying the sources of non-adiabatic effects, and provide the field parameters under which the adiabatic dynamics would be achieved.Comment: 16 pages, 16 figures.     Perfect imaging with geodesic waveguides

    Transformation optics is used to prove that a spherical waveguide filled with an isotropic material with radial refractive index n=1/r has radial polarized modes (i.e. the electric field has only radial component) with the same perfect focusing properties as the Maxwell Fish-Eye lens. The approximate version of that device using a thin waveguide with a homogenous core paves the way to experimentally prove perfect imaging in the Maxwell Fish Eye lens

    Synthesis, characterization and performance of robust poison-resistant ultrathin film yttria stabilized zirconia – nickel anodes for application in solid electrolyte fuel cells

    We report on the synthesis of undoped ∼5 μm YSZ-Ni porous thin films prepared by reactive pulsed DC magnetron sputtering at an oblique angle of incidence. Pre-calcination of the amorphous unmodified precursor layers followed by reduction produces a film consisting of uniformly distributed tilted columnar aggregates having extensive three-phase boundaries and favorable gas diffusion characteristics. Similarly prepared films doped with 1.2 at.% Au are also porous and contain highly dispersed gold present as Ni-Au alloy particles whose surfaces are strongly enriched with Au. With hydrogen as fuel, the performance of the undoped thin film anodes is comparable to that of 10–20 times thicker typical commercial anodes. With a 1:1 steam/carbon feed, the un-doped anode cell current rapidly falls to zero after 60 h. In striking contrast, the initial performance of the Au-doped anode is much higher and remains unaffected after 170 h. Under deliberately harsh conditions the performance of the Au-doped anodes decreases progressively, almost certainly due to carbon deposition. Even so, the cell maintains some activity after 3 days operation in dramatic contrast with the un-doped anode, which stops working after only three hours of use.     Situación de la dislipemia en España. Las guías de práctica clínica (GPC) se han convertido en un instru- mento fundamental en nuestra actividad asistencial. La revisión deta- llada de la evidencia científica disponible permite la elaboración de documentos de recomendaciones diagnósticas y terapéuticas avala- dos por las principales instituciones científicas. A pesar de que habi- tualmente están basadas en los mismos estudios y, por lo tanto, se redactan a partir de los mismos resultados, pueden existir diferentes interpretaciones y distintos enfoques, como ha sucedido reciente- mente en las principales GPC que abordan el manejo de las dislipe- mias. En el año 2011 la Sociedad Europea de Cardiología (ESC) y la European Atherosclerosis Society (EAS) publicaron la Guía ESC/EAS para el manejo de las dislipemias1, con unas recomendaciones que se mantienen vigentes y la mayoría de las sociedades científicas de nuestro entorno respaldan. A finales de 2013, el American College of Cardiology (ACC) y la American Heart Association (AHA) hicieron pública su guía sobre el tratamiento del colesterol sanguíneo para reducir el riesgo cardiovascular aterosclerótico en adultos2. Aunque persiguen la misma finalidad, que es la reducción del riesgo cardio- vascular mediante el tratamiento de la dislipemia, lo hacen con una orientación completamente distinta que ha generado un gran debate en el último año y ha hecho correr ríos de tinta, no solo en la literatura médica, sino también en la prensa generalista. En este número de REVISTA ESPAÑOLA DE CARDIOLOGÍA SUPLEMENTOS se revisarán detalladamente ambas GPC, sus fortalezas y sus debilidades. Como sucede la mayoría de las veces, habrá aspectos positivos en una y otra, y no necesariamente debemos elegir entre las dos, sino que tenemos la oportunidad de conocer la visión de las sociedades impli- cadas y hacer un análisis constructivo de sus recomendaciones. En lo que sí hay un acuerdo total en las GPC del manejo de dislipemia es que el tratamiento debe basarse, además de en medidas de estilo de vida, en la utilización de estatinas como fármacos hipolipemiantes de elección cuando esté indicado, en prevención primaria según el nivel de riesgo y siempre en prevención secundaria, salvo contraindicación. Se ha demostrado rotundamente la eficacia de las estatinas en la disminución del colesterol plasmático, con una reducción proporcional de la morbimortalidad cardiovascular. Las estatinas, por su mecanismo de acción, no solo reducen el colesterol plasmático, sino que también poseen otros efectos extrali- pídicos; estas acciones pleotrópicas se están estudiando en diferentes escenarios, tanto clínicos como experimentales, con la finalidad de establecer posibles beneficios de las estatinas más allá de su capacidad hipolipemiante. Este aspecto, así como la utilización de las estatinas en el síndrome coronario agudo y el manejo de la dislipemia de pacientes con cardiopatía isquémica, diabéticos y otros grupos de riesgo, también se abordará en esta monografía. A lo largo de los seis artículos que la componen, expertos en el manejo de la enfermedad cardiovascular en nuestro país ofrecen una puesta al día sobre el manejo de la dislipemia

    Size and emission wavelength control of InAs/InP quantum wires

    For a certain heteroepitaxial system, the optical properties of self-assembled nanostructures basically depend on their size. In this work, we have studied different ways to modify the height of InAs/InP quantum wires (QWrs) in order to change the photoluminescence emission wavelength. One procedure consists of changing the QWr size by varying the amount of InAs deposited. The other two methods explored rely on the control of As/P exchange process, in one case during growth of InAs on InP for QWr formation and in the other case during growth of InP on InAs for QWr capping. The combination of the three approaches provides a fine tuning of QWr emission wavelength between 1.2 and 1.9 μm at room [email protected]

    SMusket: Spark-based DNA error correction on distributed-memory systems

Error correction in NGS datasets is considered an important preprocessing step in many workflows as sequencing errors can severely affect the quality of downstream analysis. Although current error correction approaches provide reasonably high accuracies, their computational cost can be still unacceptable when processing large datasets. In this paper we propose SparkMusket (SMusket), a Big Data tool built upon the open-source Apache Spark cluster computing framework to boost the performance of Musket, one of the most widely adopted and top-performing multithreaded correctors. Our tool efficiently exploits Spark features to implement a scalable error correction algorithm intended for distributed-memory systems built using commodity hardware. The experimental evaluation on a 16-node cluster using four publicly available datasets has shown that SMusket is up to 15.3 times faster than previous state-of-the-art MPI-based tools, also providing a maximum speedup of 29.8 over its multithreaded counterpart.     A viscoplastic constitutive model with strain rate variables for asphalt mixtures—numerical simulation

    The study and development of recycling techniques for pavements is an increasing activity in engineering nowadays. This research line demands a more realistic characterization of the material properties with the aim of simulate the asphalt mixture’s response placed into a multilayered system over granular bases, under dynamic loads, considering also temperature variation or strength reduction for cyclic loads. In order to improve the current formulations, a new viscoplastic model has been developed assuming the strain rate dependency of the material’s response observed in the experimental tests. The strain rate variable affects in a significant way the Young modulus and the viscosity parameter of the model. According to this hypothesis a constitutive equations have been formulated. The mechanical variables involved have been calibrated according to experimental results, developing new expressions for the strain rate dependent parameters. The new viscoplastic model permits us to characterize the material’s response with a few mechanical values, easily obtained from standard laboratory tests. The results obtained show a good approximation to experimental laboratory curves for different rates of loading and temperatures. The model has been applied to simulate the response of a real flexible pavement structure conformed by two asphalt layers over two granular bases, that’s materials with different constitutive behaviors. Experimental tests in the recycled track have been made obtaining the horizontal strain evolution under dynamic load. Different loading rates and temperatures, as well as cracked and continuum pavement responses have been considered in the study. Strains were measured in the interface between the two asphalt layers and simulated using the here proposed model offering a fairly good approximation of the real response observed in the track, although the degree of variation even in the experimental curves is quite high. The results of this study represent a proper base for further developments in structural analysis of pavement layers, considering more complex phenomena, determinant in the long term material’s response, to develop a numerical tool for pavements’ design and lifetime prediction

    First evidence is presented for Leishmania (Viannia) spp. dissemination and tissue tropism in the domestic dog. Using PCR and histology, parasites were detected in the conjunctiva, lung, lymph nodes and ovaries of 2 naturally infected Peruvian dogs. The detection of parasites in the blood indicates that parasite dissemination to those organs may have been haematogenous
