Dinámica del crecimiento en los municipios colombianos. 1985 - 2010

Maestría en Economía, Facultad de Ciencias Contables, Económicas y Administrativas.La presente tesis se concentra en la validación de la hipótesis de convergencia condicional y club al interior de Colombia, utilizando como unidad de análisis el municipio, y como variable de análisis el valor del impuesto de industria y comercio per cápita de 787 municipios colombianos utilizando la aplicación de técnicas de econometría espacial. Los resultados encontrados rechazan la hipótesis de convergencia condicional en la visión Barro & Sala-i-Martin (1991, 1992) en el crecimiento de los municipios colombianos, encontrando una velocidad de divergencia entre -0.47% y -0.48% para el período 1985 – 2010 de acuerdo con la técnica econométrica empleada. La evidencia encontrada a través del análisis espacial de datos, la construcción de kernels estocásticos y el uso de matrices de Markov, confirma que el crecimiento municipal colombiano muestra evidencia de convergencia tipo club. El 61% de los municipios analizados generan una renta inferior a la mitad de la renta media per cápita nacional y sólo el 22% de los municipios logran superarla. El uso de cadenas ergódicas de Markov permite comprobar que el proceso de crecimiento municipal colombiano en el largo plazo se configura como un desequilibrio estable, donde persiste un mecanismo de doble vía que genera divergencia y fortalece la polarización

Structural study of the type II 3-dehydroquinate dehydratase from Actinobacillus pleuropneumoniae

9 pages, 7 figures, 2 tables.The structure of the type II dehydroquinate dehydratase (DHQase) from Actinobacillus pleuropneumoniae, the third enzyme of the shikimate pathway, has been determined. Crystals diffracting to 1.7 Å were obtained in space and on earth using the counter-diffusion technique. The structure was solved using molecular replacement and refined to high resolution. The overall structure of the dodecameric enzyme is described and compared with structures of DHQases from other bacteria. DHQases contain a flexible loop that presumably closes over the active site upon substrate binding. The enzyme can exist in an open or closed conformation. The present structure displays the open conformation, with a sulfate anion bound in the active site. The availability of this structure opens a route to structure-based antibiotics targetting this pathogenic bacterium.We thank Professor Kabsch for providing XDS free of charge. Encapsulation against Extrinsic Degradation Factors and Stability Testing of Perovskite Solar Cells

Commercialization of perovskite solar technology depends on reaching a stable functioning of the devices. In this regard, both intrinsic (chemistry phenomena of the different device layers) and extrinsic factors (environmental) need to be considered. In this chapter, we report the state of the art of encapsulation techniques against extrinsic degradation mechanisms. Our analysis includes the most common encapsulation structures, materials employed and their by-products, standard methods to test the stability of the devices (accelerated testing, outdoor and degradation monitoring), and security requirements to prevent the health/environmental hazard of lead leakage

Normal Pressure Hydrocephalus: Revisiting the Hydrodynamics of the Brain

Normal pressure hydrocephalus syndrome is the most common form of hydrocephalus in the elderly and produces a dementia which can be reversible surgically. It is characterized by ventriculomegaly and the classic triad of symmetric gait disturbance, cognitive decline and urinary incontinence, also known as Hakim’s triad. To date, the exact etiology of the disease has not been elucidated and the only effective treatment is a cerebrospinal fluid shunting procedure which can be a ventriculoatrial, ventriculoperitoneal or lumboperitoneal shunt. The most important problem is the high rate of underdiagnosis or misdiagnosis due to similarities in symptoms with other neurodegenerative disorders, and in some cases, coexistence. Hence, increasing awareness amongst the community and medical professionals in order to increase clinical suspicion, timely diagnosis and treatment are paramount. The best way to achieve this is by having a structured protocol with patient-centered tests that evaluates the entire myriad of alterations a clinician might encounter whenever treating patients with this disorder. Recent advances in imaging technology as well as cerebrospinal fluid biomarkers have given interesting insight into the pathophysiology of the disease and will certainly contribute greatly in diagnostic advancements. We finally present an institutional protocol which has been accredited by international peers with promising results in diagnostic and outcome rates

Predicting and Characterizing Neurodegenerative Subtypes with Multimodal Neurocognitive Signatures of Social and Cognitive Processes

Background: Social cognition is critically compromised across neurodegenerative diseases, including the behavioral variant frontotemporal dementia (bvFTD), Alzheimer's disease (AD), and Parkinson's disease (PD). However, no previous study has used social cognition and other cognitive tasks to predict diagnoses of these conditions, let alone reporting the brain correlates of prediction outcomes. Objective: We performed a diagnostic classification analysis using social cognition, cognitive screening (CS), and executive function (EF) measures, and explored which anatomical and functional networks were associated with main predictors. Methods: Multiple group discriminant function analyses (MDAs) and ROC analyses of social cognition (facial emotional recognition, theory of mind), CS, and EF were implemented in 223 participants (bvFTD, AD, PD, controls). Gray matter volume and functional connectivity correlates of top discriminant scores were investigated. Results: Although all patient groups revealed deficits in social cognition, CS, and EF, our classification approach provided robust discriminatory characterizations. Regarding controls, probabilistic social cognition outcomes provided the best characterization for bvFTD (together with CS) and PD, but not AD (for which CS alone was the best predictor). Within patient groups, the best MDA probabilities scores yielded high classification rates for bvFTD versus PD (98.3%, social cognition), AD versus PD (98.6%, social cognition+CS), and bvFTD versus AD (71.7%, social cognition+CS). Top MDA scores were associated with specific patterns of atrophy and functional networks across neurodegenerative conditions. Conclusion: Standardized validated measures of social cognition, in combination with CS, can provide a dimensional classification with specific pathophysiological markers of neurodegeneration diagnoses.Fil: Ibanez Barassi, Agustin Mariano. Una nueva especie de rana Pristimantis (Terrarana: Strabomantidae) de los bosques nublados de la cuenca alta del río Pastaza, Ecuador

A new species of frog of the genus Pristimantis is described from the cloud forests of the upper Pastaza basin, on the eastern versant of the central Andes of Ecuador. Pristimantis tungurahua sp. nov. is characterized by lacking cranial crests and vocal sacs, showing a visible tympanic membrane and annulus, conical tubercles on the upper eyelid and heel, and by having red coloration on the groin, underarm, and ventral surfaces in females (in males, red is restricted to the underarms and groins).Una nueva especie de rana del género Pristimantis es descrita de los bosques nublados de la cuenca alta del río Pastaza, en la vertiente oriental de los Andes centrales de Ecuador. Pristimantis tungurahua sp. nov. se caracteriza por la ausencia de crestas craneales y sacos vocales, presencia de tímpano y anillo timpánico, tubérculos cónicos en el párpado y talón, y en particular porque las hembras presentan una coloración rojiza muy llamativa en las ingles, axilas y superficies ventrales (en machos el color rojizo se restringe a ingles y axilas)

Power Quality Indices Estimation Platform

En este artículo se presenta una plataforma interactiva para la estimación de índices de calidad de la potencia de sistemas eléctricos monofásicos, en conformidad con el estándar IEEE 1459-2010. La plataforma PQanalizador se desarrolló con el objetivo de apoyar actividades de docencia e investigación en calidad de la energía eléctrica. La plataforma estima los índices a partir de señales de voltaje y corriente usando tres diferentes algoritmos basados en la transformada rápida de Fourier (FFT), la transformada Wavelet Packet (WPT) y la metodología de mínimos cuadrados. Los resultados muestran que los algoritmos implementados son eficientes para la estimación de los índices de calidad de la potencia y que la plataforma puede ser usada según los objetivos propuestos.An interactive platform for estimating the quality indices in single phase electric power systems is presented. It meets the IEEE 1459-2010 standard recommendations. The platform was developed in order to support teaching and research activities in electric power quality. The platform estimates the power quality indices from voltage and current signals using three different algorithms based on fast Fourier transform (FFT), wavelet packet transform (WPT) and least squares method. The results show that the algorithms implemented are efficient for estimating the quality indices of the power and the platform can be used according to the objectives established.

Tendencias de la investigación en Ingeniería Ambiental

Esta obra incluye las memorias del Simposio “Tendencias de la Investigación en Ingeniería Ambiental”, organizado por el Grupo de Investigaciones y Mediciones Ambientales (GEMA), realizado en la Universidad de Medellín en agosto de 2007. El texto está conformado por 14 capítulos agrupados en cuatro partes. En la primera se agrupan los trabajos relacionados con la calidad y alternativas de tratamiento del agua e hidráulica ambiental (capítulos 1 al 4). La segunda trata temas relacionados con la contaminación atmosférica y calidad del aire (capítulos 5 al 6).
