Reducing the Health Care Burden Caused by Undocumented Immigrants

    • Uncompensated health care and Emergency Department (ED) overcrowding are a national crisis in the United States, and uninsured patients are a major contributor. Undocumented Immigrants (UIs) are a large component of the uninsured patient population. • The purpose of this study is to evaluate for efficacy and taxpayer value two large-scale potential solutions: Federally Qualified Health Centers (FQHCs), and expanded Medicaid. • The method of research included a variety of key terms in electronic search databases such as CINAHL Complete, PubMed, and Google Scholar, and only articles published between 2014 and 2018 by peer- reviewed journals or gray literature (.gov) were included. • A Limitation of this study was the inability to conduct a single or limited number of systematic searches of related studies or articles and filter the results using a prescribed set of inclusion or exclusion criteria. • Data results suggest that while expanded Medicaid does reduce uncompensated health care, it has been shown to increase ED use and overcrowding, at least in the short-term. Therefore, the notion that expanded Medicaid successfully reduces ED overcrowding, was found to be false. FQHCs are a reasonable solution, but there are too few, and relatively unheard of among the target population.https://commons.und.edu/pas-grad-posters/1156/thumbnail.jp

Information and Communication Technologies (ICTS) as a Tool for Intercultural Education. A collaborative experience in secondary education in Tlapa de Comonfort, Guerrero, Mexico

    Get PDF
This paper discusses the collaborative experience of creating educational materials for a secondary school in Tlapa de Comonfort, Guerrero, México. In this school, students from Nahuatl, Tun savi, Me'phaa and Spanish speaking communities live and learn together. The intercultural context provides challenges for science education that we sought to address. The use of collaborative technologies in science classes has made visible the cultural diversity in the classroom, helping students and teachers recognize themselves as active agents in the construction of common knowledge and in sharing their\ud knowledge. This experience also shows the importance of ICTs as technologies of expression that reinforce individual and collective identity in intercultural contexts

To increase the concentration of gelatin in a formulation for pound cake reduced in margarine and partially replaced by canola oil, there is a proportional increase in specific gravity, apparent viscosity and viscoelastic modules, decreasing the size and number of bubbles formed in the batter. In pound cake, there is a proportional decrease in volume and uniformity of the crumb and increase in the firmness, however, the addition of 1.25% of gelatin was the most accepted sensory formulation due to perceived a crumb more consistent and wet, so, the functionality of the gelatin as hydrocolloid, is limited to the final texture of the pound cake, concluding that it may be an alternative to improve the acceptability of a pound cake reduced in margarine, which is also of lower cost. The use of different hydrocolloids in the partial substitution of margarine by vegetable oils, are evaluated to achieve products with characteristics similar to the traditional product. The objective of this study was to evaluate the effect of the addition of different concentrations of gelatin (0%, 0.75%, 1.25%, and 2.0%) in pound cake formulation reduced in margarine and partially replaced with canola oil. It was determined specific gravity (SG), apparent viscosity, modules of viscoelasticity (G' and G") and number and size of air bubbles in the batter. In the pound cake was determined texture (TPA and sensory evaluation), crumb structure and moisture. By increasing the concentration of gelatin, it was observed a proportional increase of SG, apparent viscosity and elastic and viscous modules, predominating the viscous module with respect to elastic module, and a decrease in the number and size of air bubbles in the batter. In the pound cake, there was a proportional decrease in the volume and uniformity of the crumb, with respect to the size and number of cavities formed, however, sensorially, the most accepted formulation was the addition of 1.25% of gelatin because it perceives a more consistent and moist crumb, therefore, adding gelatin can be an alternative to improve the acceptability of a reduced pancake in margarine, which It's also less expensive.CONACy

Experimental-Theoretic Approach to Drug-Lymphocyte Interactome Networks with Flow Cytometry and Spectral Moments Perturbation Theory

Modelos matematicos y citometria de flujoAbstract: We can combine experimental techniques like Flow Cytometry Analysis (FCA) with Chemoinformatics methods to predict the complex networks of interactions between organic compounds and targets in the immune system. In this work, we determined experimentally the values of EC50 = 17.82 μg/mL and Cytotoxicity = 20.6 % for the antimicrobial / anti-parasite drug Dermofural over Balb/C CD9 lymphocytes using flow cytometry. After that, we developed a new Perturbation-theory model for Drug-Cell Target Interactome in Lymphocytes based on dispersion-polarization moments of drug structure. The models correctly classifies 34591 out of 42715 (Accuracy = 80.9%) cases of perturbations in assay endpoints of 11492 drugs (including both train and validation series). Each endpoint correspond to one out of 2616 assays, 38 molecular and cellular targets, 77 standard type measures, in four possible (human and rodentsCONACY

Molecular findings of colombian patients with type VI mucopolysaccharidosis (Maroteaux-Lamy syndrome)

Q483-89Introduction: Maroteaux–Lamy syndrome, or mucopolysaccharidosis (MPS) type VI, is an autosomal recessive lysosomal storage disease caused by a deficient activity of the enzyme arylsulfatase B (ARSB), required to degrade dermatan sulfate. The onset and progression of the disease vary, producing a spectrum of clinical presentation. So far, 133 mutations have been reported. The aim of this study is to determine the mutations in the ARSB gene that are responsible for this disease in Colombian patients. Results: Fourteen patients with clinical manifestations and biochemical diagnosis of MPS VI were studied, including two siblings. The 8 exons of the gene were directly sequenced from patients' DNA, and 14 mutations were found. 57% of these mutations had not been previously reported (p.H111P, p.C121R, p.G446S, p.*534W, p.S334I, p.H147P, c.900TNG, and c.1531_1553del) and 43% had been previously reported (p.G144R, p.W322*, p.G302R, p.C447F, p.L128del, and c.1143-1GNC). Of the previously reported mutations, 80% have been associated with severe phenotypes and 20% with intermediate-severe phenotypes. Bioinformatic predictions indicate that the new mutations reported in this paper are also highly deleterious. Conclusions: Most of the Colombian patients in this study had private mutations
