The impact of food price shocks on consumption and nutritional patterns of urban Mexican households
During the 2000s, recurrent food price shocks due to volatility in international markets and extreme weather events affected consumption and nutritional patterns of Mexican urban households. This research quantifies the impacts of food price shocks on the purchase of nutrients and on the weight gain of children in urban Mexican households. We find differentiated patterns of food consumption across income quintiles, which result in heterogeneous effects of price shocks on the purchase of nutrients and on weight gain according to age and sex in children. In particular, cereal price shocks are more detrimental and more regressive than price shocks on other categories like meats or beverages
Semiparametric copula-based stochastic weather generator
Stochastic Weather Generators (SWGs) try to replicate the stochastic patterns of climatological variables characterized by high dimensionality, non-normal probability density functions and non-linear dependence relationships. However, conventional SWGs usually typify weather variables with not always justified probability distributions assuming linear dependence between variables. This research proposes an alternative SWG that introduces the advantages of the copula modeling into the replication of stochastic weather patterns. The semiparametric copula-based SWG introduces more exibility allowing researcher to model non-linear dependence structures independently of the marginals involved. Also, it can better model tail dependence, which would result in a more accurate reproduction of extreme weather events

The Mars Environmental Dynamics Analyzer, MEDA. A Suite of Environmental Sensors for the Mars 2020 Mission
86 pags, 49 figs, 24 tabsNASA's Mars 2020 (M2020) rover mission includes a suite of sensors to monitor current environmental conditions near the surface of Mars and to constrain bulk aerosol properties from changes in atmospheric radiation at the surface. The Mars Environmental Dynamics Analyzer (MEDA) consists of a set of meteorological sensors including wind sensor, a barometer, a relative humidity sensor, a set of 5 thermocouples to measure atmospheric temperature at ∼1.5 m and ∼0.5 m above the surface, a set of thermopiles to characterize the thermal IR brightness temperatures of the surface and the lower atmosphere. MEDA adds a radiation and dust sensor to monitor the optical atmospheric properties that can be used to infer bulk aerosol physical properties such as particle size distribution, non-sphericity, and concentration. The MEDA package and its scientific purpose are described in this document as well as how it responded to the calibration tests and how it helps prepare for the human exploration of Mars. A comparison is also presented to previous environmental monitoring payloads landed on Mars on the Viking, Pathfinder, Phoenix, MSL, and InSight spacecraft. This work has been funded by the Spanish Ministry of Economy and Competitiveness, through the projects No. ESP2014-54256-C4-1-R (also -2-R, -3-R and -4-R) and AYA2015-65041-P; Ministry of Science, Innovation and Universities, projects No. ESP2016-79612-C3-1-R (also -2-R and -3-R), ESP2016-80320-C2-1-R, RTI2018-098728-B-C31 (also -C32 and -C33) and RTI2018-099825-B-C31; Instituto Nacional de Tecnica Aeroespacial; Ministry of Science and Innovation's Centre for the Development of Industrial Technology; Grupos Gobierno Vasco IT1366-19; and European Research Council Consolidator Grant no 818602.Peer reviewe
The Impact of Food Price Shocks on the Consumption and Nutritional Patterns of Mexican Households
In the last years food security has been an increasing concern for national governments, in particular in developing countries. Although food security is conceptualized by the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) in four dimensions: availability, access, utilization and stability, this research focuses only in access and utilization dimensions because the analysis of these aspects reflects more accurately the demand and nutrition sides of food security.
During the 2000’s decade, recurrent food price shocks have altered the consumption and nutritional patterns of Mexican households, having significant consequences in food security. However, little is known about their impacts on consumption quantities and on their effects in the quality of the individuals’ diet.
This research represents an effort to measure the effects of food price changes in a wider dimension that allows reasonably accurate analysis of who and how are the most likely adversely affected by harmful food price shocks, such as food price inflation, droughts, frost, flooding, etc.
The methodological approach of this research uses six household-level survey-based variables within a pseudo-panel framework to carry out the estimations of demand analysis model. These estimators constitute a reasonably accurate description of household consumption patterns. Furthermore, nutrient elasticities estimates measure the effects of food prices shocks on the nutrient quantity purchase of the individuals.
For the sake of the analysis, estimations are based in two groups of households and people, those in food poverty situation and those who are not in this condition. The estimations show interesting results; as expected, there exists important differences in terms of consumption patterns. Nonfood poverty households present a more diversified expenditure than households in food poverty condition, who mainly obtain their nutritional requirements from cereals and vegetables, pulses, tubers and fruits. As a consequence, the most vulnerable population is highly effected by price shocks on cereals.
Additional evaluations on past rising food prices episodes were performed to measure the impact in terms of quantity percentage purchased by people in food poverty condition and people who is not in these circumstances
Weather Derivatives and Water Management in Developing Countries: An Application for an Irrigation District in Central Mexico
This paper analyzes possible improvements to water allocation from introducing weather derivatives as an insurance instrument in irrigation districts with no water markets and two cropping seasons. Dry-season production depends completely on irrigation, while wet-season production depends on irrigation as a supplement to naturally occurring precipitation. Using an analytical model of water allocation and historical data from an irrigation district in Central Mexico, simulations show that weather derivatives could encourage interseasonal reallocation of water from wet to dry season, generating new Pareto-optimal water allocations that improve overall welfare among producers
