    Examining Heterosexual Women\u27s Social Comparisons and Perceptions of Sexual Competition with Porn Stars

    The current study investigated women’s social comparisons and perceptions of sexual competition with porn stars they imagined their romantic partners viewed for purposes of private masturbation. Two novel predictors were considered, the body size (thin vs. plus-size) and facial attractiveness (high vs. low) of the porn stars, to investigate conditions that were more or less threatening to women’s relationship satisfaction, sexual satisfaction, facial satisfaction, body satisfaction, and sexual desirability. Results from a 2 x 2 between-subjects online experiment (N = 762) suggest that women’s downward comparisons with porn stars’ facial attractiveness resulted in positive effects on facial satisfaction and downward comparisons with porn stars’ body size resulted in positive effects on relationship satisfaction, sexual satisfaction, and sexual desirability. Women’s upward comparisons with porn stars’ body size resulted in negative effects on sexual desirability. Facially attractive (vs. unattractive) porn stars evoked more emotional jealousy, however thin (vs. plus-size) porn stars did not. Emotional jealousy mediated the pathway between exposure to facially attractive (vs. unattractive) porn stars and negative interpersonal and intrapersonal satisfaction outcomes. However, emotional jealousy did not mediate the pathway between exposure to thin (vs. plus-size) porn stars and negative interpersonal or intrapersonal satisfaction outcomes. Women also perceived their romantic partners were comparing their faces and bodies to the facially attractive and thin porn stars which elicited emotional jealousy. This comparison threat also mediated the pathway between exposure to facially attractive porn stars and thin porn stars on emotional jealousy. The findings from the present study offers more insight into the boundary conditions and pathways that provoke better or worse satisfaction outcomes for women in romantic relationships as it relates to their partners’ pornography use

    Nanotoxicology : pulmonary toxicity studies on self-assembling rosette nanotubes

    A growing demand for information on the human health and environmental effects of materials produced using nanotechnology has led to a new area of investigation known as nanotoxicology. Research in this field has widespread implications in facilitating the medical applications of nanomaterials but also in addressing occupational and environmental toxicity concerns. Improving our understanding of these issues also has broad appeal in the stewardship of nanotechnology and its acceptance by the public. This work represents some of the early research in burgeoning field of nanotoxicology. Using a variety of in vivo and in vitro models, as well as cellular and molecular techniques I first studied a possible role for the novel cytokine endothelial monocyte activating polypeptide-II (EMAP-II) in acute lung inflammation in rats (Chapter 2).     Pandemic influenza: implications for occupational medicine

    This article reviews the biological and occupational medicine literature related to H5N1 pandemic influenza and its impact on infection control, cost and business continuity in settings outside the health care community. The literature on H5N1 biology is reviewed including the treatment and infection control mechanisms as they pertain to occupational medicine. Planning activity for the potential arrival of pandemic avian influenza is growing rapidly. Much has been published on the molecular biology of H5N1 but there remains a paucity of literature on the occupational medicine impacts to organizations. This review summarizes some of the basic science surrounding H5N1 influenza and raises some key concerns in pandemic planning for the occupational medicine professional. Workplaces other than health care settings will be impacted greatly by an H5N1 pandemic and the occupational physician will play an essential role in corporate preparation, response, and business continuity strategies

    Relational Effects of Romantic Partner’s Perceived Parasocial Romantic Attachment With Pornography

    An online experiment investigated heterosexual women’s responses to their romantic partners’ pornography use. Specifically, we examined how a perceived parasocial (i.e., entirely fanciful, one-sided) versus social (i.e., reciprocal) interaction with a porn actress, as well as a perceived parasocial romantic attachment to a porn actress, may pose a relational threat to one’s actual romantic relationship. Results revealed that perceptions of infidelity and jealousy were dampened by women’s belief that their romantic partner had a weak (vs. stronger) parasocial romantic attachment to and parasocial (vs. social) interaction with a porn actress. These findings advance our understanding of the effects of pornography use within romantic relationships and highlight how parasocial relationships can affect romance

    HIV-exposed uninfected children. A systematic review on psychological well-being and association with school performances in Africa

    There is a growing number of children affected by HIV in Africa. Research on HIV-exposed uninfected children (HEU) is also growing. This systematic review focuses on the psychological well-being of HEU and its association with school intervention, outcomes, and enrollment in the African context, which is where the rate of HIV reaches its highest levels. Research on public databases was conducted according to PRISMA standards. Only studies on HEU primary school children in Africa, both quantitative and qualitative, were included. Out of 1510 papers retrieved, 50 met the inclusion criteria. These studies demonstrate that HEU children are more likely to perform worse in school compared to their counterparts who were not exposed to HIV and to show poorer concentration in the classroom. Children with parents suffering from AIDS are worried for them and have to take household responsibility, resulting in school dropouts, juvenile work, and risky behaviors. Few interventions have been conducted in the school environment with some of them being successful; therefore, future research should involve schools to create an inclusive environment where HEU children could enhance their potential and improve their psychological health

    Rosette nanotubes inhibit bovine neutrophil chemotaxis

    Migration of activated neutrophils that have prolonged lifespan into inflamed organs is an important component of host defense but also contributes to tissue damage and mortality. In this report, we used biologically-inspired RGD-tagged rosette nanotubes (RNT) to inhibit neutrophil chemotaxis. We hypothesize that RGD-RNT will block neutrophil migration through inhibition of MAPK. In this report, RNT conjugated to lysine (K–RNT) and arginine-glycine-aspartic acid-serine-lysine (RGDSK-RNT) were co-assembled in a molar ratio of 95/5. The effect of the resulting composite RNT (RGDSK/K–RNT) on neutrophil chemotaxis, cell signaling and apoptosis was then investigated. Exposure to RGDSK/K–RNT reduced bovine neutrophil migration when compared to the non-treated group (p < 0.001). Similar effect was seen following treatment with ERK1/2 or p38 MAPK inhibitors. Phosphorylation of the ERK1/2 and p38 MAPK was inhibited at 5 min by RGDSK/K–RNT (p < 0.05). The RGDSD/K-RNT did not affect the migration of neutrophils pre-treated with αvÎČ3 integrin antibody suggesting that both bind to the same receptor. RGDSK/K–RNT did not induce apoptosis in bovine neutrophils, which was suppressed by pre-exposing them to LPS (p < 0.001). We conclude that RGDSK/K–RNT inhibit phosphorylation of ERK1/2 and p38 MAPK and inhibit chemotaxis of bovine neutrophils

    Passive Heating Attenuates Post-Exercise Cardiac Autonomic Recovery in Healthy Young Males

    Post-exercise heart rate (HR) recovery (HRR) presents a biphasic pattern, which is mediated by parasympathetic reactivation and sympathetic withdrawal. Several mechanisms regulate these post-exercise autonomic responses and thermoregulation has been proposed to play an important role. The aim of this study was to test the effects of heat stress on HRR and HR variability (HRV) after aerobic exercise in healthy subjects. Twelve healthy males (25 ± 1 years, 23.8 ± 0.5 kg/m2) performed 14 min of moderate-intensity cycling exercise (40–60% HRreserve) followed by 5 min of loadless active recovery in two conditions: heat stress (HS) and normothermia (NT). In HS, subjects dressed in a whole-body water-perfused tube-lined suit to increase internal temperature (Tc) by ~1°C. In NT, subjects did not wear the suit. HR, core and skin temperatures (Tc and Tsk), mean arterial pressure (MAP) skin blood flow (SKBF), and cutaneous vascular conductance (CVC) were measured throughout and analyzed during post-exercise recovery. HRR was assessed through calculations of HR decay after 60 and 300 s of recovery (HRR60s and HRR300s), and the short- and long-term time constants of HRR (T30 and HRRt). Post-exercise HRV was examined via calculations of RMSSD (root mean square of successive RR intervals) and RMS (root mean square residual of RR intervals). The HS protocol promoted significant thermal stress and hemodynamic adjustments during the recovery (HS-NT differences: Tc = +0.7 ± 0.3°C; Tsk = +3.2 ± 1.5°C; MAP = −12 ± 14 mmHg; SKBF = +90 ± 80 a.u; CVC = +1.5 ± 1.3 a.u./mmHg). HRR and post-exercise HRV were significantly delayed in HS (e.g., HRR60s = 27 ± 9 vs. 44 ± 12 bpm, P < 0.01; HRR300s = 39 ± 12 vs. 59 ± 16 bpm, P < 0.01). The effects of heat stress (e.g., the HS-NT differences) on HRR were associated with its effects on thermal and hemodynamic responses. In conclusion, heat stress delays HRR, and this effect seems to be mediated by an attenuated parasympathetic reactivation and sympathetic withdrawal after exercise. In addition, the impact of heat stress on HRR is related to the magnitude of the heat stress-induced thermal stress and hemodynamic changes
