MICU1 Interacts with the D-Ring of the MCU Pore to Control Its Ca2+ Flux and Sensitivity to Ru360

Proper control of the mitochondrial Ca2+ uniporter's pore (MCU) is required to allow Ca2+-dependent activation of oxidative metabolism and to avoid mitochondrial Ca2+ overload and cell death. The MCU's gatekeeping and cooperative activation is mediated by the Ca2+-sensing MICU1 protein, which has been proposed to form dimeric complexes anchored to the EMRE scaffold of MCU. We unexpectedly find that MICU1 suppresses inhibition of MCU by ruthenium red/Ru360, which bind to MCU's DIME motif, the selectivity filter. This led us to recognize in MICU1's sequence a putative DIME interacting domain (DID), which is required for both gatekeeping and cooperative activation of MCU and for cell survival. Thus, we propose that MICU1 has to interact with the D-ring formed by the DIME domains in MCU to control the uniporter. Copyright © 2018 Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved

Detonation in hydrogen–nitrous oxide–diluent mixtures: An experimental and numerical study

Knowledge of H_2–N_2O mixtures explosive properties is important to the safety of nuclear waste storage and semi-conductor manufacturing processes. The present study provides new experimental data on H_2–N_2O detonations, and proposes a thermochemical model which is used to numerically simulate detonation propagation. Detonation cell size has been measured in a variety of H_2–N_2O–Ar mixtures. Even at low initial pressure, these mixtures are very sensitive to detonation with cell size of few millimeters. Using a reduced version of a detailed reaction scheme, 2-D Euler simulations have been used to examine the features of detonation in H_2–N_2O–Diluent mixtures. A PLIF model has been applied to allow for direct comparison with experimental results. Statistical analysis of the cellular cycle dynamics has been performed

CADDA: Class-wise Automatic Differentiable Data Augmentation for EEG Signals

International audienceData augmentation is a key element of deep learning pipelines, as it informs the network during training about transformations of the input data that keep the label unchanged. Manually finding adequate augmentation methods and parameters for a given pipeline is however rapidly cumbersome. In particular, while intuition can guide this decision for images, the design and choice of augmentation policies remains unclear for more complex types of data, such as neuroscience signals. Besides, class-dependent augmentation strategies have been surprisingly unexplored in the literature, although it is quite intuitive: changing the color of a car image does not change the object class to be predicted, but doing the same to the picture of an orange does. This paper investigates gradient-based automatic data augmentation algorithms amenable to class-wise policies with exponentially larger search spaces. Motivated by supervised learning applications using EEG signals for which good augmentation policies are mostly unknown, we propose a new differentiable relaxation of the problem. In the class-agnostic setting, results show that our new relaxation leads to optimal performance with faster training than competing gradient-based methods, while also outperforming gradient-free methods in the class-wise setting. This work proposes also novel differentiable augmentation operations relevant for sleep stage classification

The ABC130 barrel module prototyping programme for the ATLAS strip tracker

For the Phase-II Upgrade of the ATLAS Detector, its Inner Detector, consisting of silicon pixel, silicon strip and transition radiation sub-detectors, will be replaced with an all new 100 % silicon tracker, composed of a pixel tracker at inner radii and a strip tracker at outer radii. The future ATLAS strip tracker will include 11,000 silicon sensor modules in the central region (barrel) and 7,000 modules in the forward region (end-caps), which are foreseen to be constructed over a period of 3.5 years. The construction of each module consists of a series of assembly and quality control steps, which were engineered to be identical for all production sites. In order to develop the tooling and procedures for assembly and testing of these modules, two series of major prototyping programs were conducted: an early program using readout chips designed using a 250 nm fabrication process (ABCN-25) and a subsequent program using a follow-up chip set made using 130 nm processing (ABC130 and HCC130 chips). This second generation of readout chips was used for an extensive prototyping program that produced around 100 barrel-type modules and contributed significantly to the development of the final module layout. This paper gives an overview of the components used in ABC130 barrel modules, their assembly procedure and findings resulting from their tests.Comment: 82 pages, 66 figure

In standard grammars (such as Gorgonief (1966), Huffman (1970), Khin Sok (2000)), kʰlah is associated with the notions of plurality and indefinition, but, as far as we know, there is no systematical description. kʰlah proves to have a fairly complex distribution

The verb trɜɨ in Khmer displays a wide range of uses and values which, as this analysis aims to show, can be given a unitary description. Based on a systematic description of the five main groups of uses ("necessity", "conformity", "detrimental", "passive" and "touch"), it is possible to formulate a set of syntactic and semantic constraints and regularities which account for this range of uses through postulation of a stable semantic identity for the verb. Deth Thach Joseph, Paillard Denis.
