Bedrock geology of the seacoast region of New Hampshire, United States

    Get PDF
The seacoast region of New Hampshire is underlain by two lithotectonic belts: the Rye Complex (RC), and the eastern portion of the Merrimack Group (MG). The Rye Formation and the Breakfast Hill member constitute the RC; the Kittery, Eliot, and Berwick Formations, the MG. The stratigraphic order interpreted in this study places the Kittery Formation transitionally above the Eliot, and identifies the contact between the Berwick and the Eliot Formations as a fault. Study of folds using a variant of the Fourier series analysis indicates that the degree of asymmetry and shape of folds in the MG and the RC are similar. Besides documenting the folding event that affected the RC and the MG simultaneously (Acadian Orogeny), the method has proven its effectiveness as an educational tool. Occurrence of pyrite crystals in MG rocks permitted the application of Finite Element Analysis. It consisted of numerical simulation of a set of controlled load cases applied to models of distorted pyrite crystals to reconstruct their assumed regular square shape. Results suggest that deformation of the crystals is related to folding that affected the host rock and not to the emplacement of a nearby Mesozoic dike. Fieldwork, microstructural analysis, and digital elevation models, provide refinement of the traces of the Calef, Nannie Island, Portsmouth, and Great Common Fault Zones; and the identification of the brittle Exeter Fault . Petrographic and microstructural analyses document the temperature of deformation in the south block of the Great Common Fault Zone, and support the correlation of these rocks with outcrops on New Castle Island and to the northeast on Gerrish Island, ME. A proposed transpressional tectonic model involving a continuum from the late Silurian through early Paleozoic suggests that folding, magmatic intrusion(s), and ductile followed by brittle faulting affected the seacoast. In this model, after juxtaposition, simultaneous folding of the MG and RC was followed by northeast-trending, right lateral ductile shear. Later, right lateral, normal, northeast-trending, and east-west trending brittle faulting occurred affecting most Paleozoic plutons. The emplacement of Mesozoic mafic dikes is associated to the opening of the Atlantic Ocean

Graph Attention and Persistence for Traveling Salesman Problem

Combinatorial optimization problems have long been a computationally-challenging family of problems with high importance within science. Although algorithms to solve such problems exist, these classical/exact algorithms tend to become computationally intractable as the problem size increases. Due to the relevancy of such problems in real life, research has explored other algorithms that forego the optimality guarantee of classical algorithms. In doing so, heuristic algorithms have achieved fast inference times with performance that is not too far from the optimal performance of classical algorithms. A particular heuristic algorithm from artificial intelligence, the attention model (AM), has achieved state-of-the-art performance in prevalent combinatorial optimization problems such as the traveling salesman, vehicle routing, and orienteering problems, where the gap between classical and heuristic algorithms was diminished. This success is attributed to the ability of the AM to tend to the structure of the input through the use of graph attention (GAT) mechanisms, a type of graph neural network. While the mechanism by which these models extract structural information, it is unknown what kind of information is extracted. This thesis presents a novel variant of the attention model (AM), the persistence attention model (AM-P), which explicitly uses a type of structural information, persistent homology. The model is tested on the traveling salesman problem with different problem node counts to compare the performance of the attention model with and without persistent homology information. It is hypothesized that persistent homology information will help the attention model better exploit the structure of the model, achieving better performance on combinatorial problems. This hypothesis is demonstrated false as there is no statistically-significant differences between the performance of the AM and AM-P. This negative result raises the possibility that the attention model may already extract structural information similar to persistent homology through its GAT mechanisms

Neurodegenerative diseases are a group of neurological conditions characterized by the loss or destruction of neurons in the central nervous system, resulting in severe impairments and death. Researchers commonly used a two-group classification (Patients with a Neurodegenerative disease vs. healthy subjects of control). Thus, the principal purpose of this article is to distinguish between Parkinson\u27s patients and subjects with Hereditary Ataxias using machine learning techniques. We conducted experiments using a real dataset comprising Gait characteristics derived from the inertial motion sensors of a smartphone (iPhone 5S). This investigation had 67 participants, 53 of who had Parkinson\u27s disease and 14 of whom had Hereditary Ataxias. Methods of feature selection were applied to reduce dimensionality. In addition, five classification algorithms were constructed and assessed based on their accuracy, precision, sensitivity, and specificity. The Support Vector Machine algorithm achieved an accuracy of 92.7%, a precision of 91.1%, a sensitivity of 96.2%, and a specificity of 89.1%. These results show that the suggested technique might inspire new research issues and have a direct therapeutic impact

Identification and characterization of the PhhR regulon in Pseudomonas putida

Pseudomonas putida is a soil microorganism that utilizes aromatic amino acids present in root exudates as a nitrogen source. We have previously shown that the PhhR transcriptional regulator induces phhAB genes encoding a phenylalanine hydroxylase. In this study we show, using microarray assays and promoter fusions, that PhhR is a global regulator responsible for the activation of genes essential for phenylalanine degradation, phenylalanine homeostasis and other genes of unknown function. Recently, it has been shown that phenylalanine catabolism occurs through more than one pathway. One of these possible pathways involves the metabolism of phenylalanine via tyrosine, p-hydroxyphenylpyruvate, and homogentisate. We identified two genes within this pathway that encode an acyl-CoA transferase involved in the metabolism of acetoacetate. All genes in this pathway were induced in response to phenylalanine in a PhhR-proficient background. The second potential degradative pathway involves the degradation of phenylalanine to produce phenylpyruvate, which seems to be degraded via phenylacetyl-CoA. A number of mutants in the paa genes encoding phenylacetyl-CoA degradation enzymes fail to grow on phenylpyruvate or phenylacetate, further supporting the existence of this second pathway. We found that the PhhR regulon also includes genes involved in the biosynthesis of aromatic amino acids that are repressed in the presence of phenylalanine, suggesting the possibility of feedback at the transcriptional level. In addition, we found that PhhR modulates the level of expression of the broad-substrate-specificity MexEF/OprN efflux pump. Expression from this pump is under the control of mexT gene product because phenylalanine-dependent transcription from the mexE promoter does not occur in a mexT mutant background. These results place PhhR as an important regulator in the control of bacterial responses to aromatic amino acids

Hispanic Health in the USA: A Scoping Review of the Literature

    Get PDF
Hispanics are the largest minority group in the USA. They contribute to the economy, cultural diversity, and health of the nation. Assessing their health status and health needs is key to inform health policy formulation and program implementation. To this end, we conducted a scoping review of the literature and national statistics on Hispanic health in the USA using a modified social-ecological framework that includes social determinants of health, health disparities, risk factors, and health services, as they shape the leading causes of morbidity and mortality. These social, environmental, and biological forces have modified the epidemiologic profile of Hispanics in the USA, with cancer being the leading cause of mortality, followed by cardiovascular diseases and unintentional injuries. Implementation of the Affordable Care Act has resulted in improved access to health services for Hispanics, but challenges remain due to limited cultural sensitivity, health literacy, and a shortage of Hispanic health care providers. Acculturation barriers and underinsured or uninsured status remain as major obstacles to health care access. Advantageous health outcomes from the “Hispanic Mortality Paradox” and the “Latina Birth Outcomes Paradox” persist, but health gains may be offset in the future by increasing rates of obesity and diabetes. Recommendations focus on the adoption of the Health in All Policies framework, expanding access to health care, developing cultural sensitivity in the health care workforce, and generating and disseminating research findings on Hispanic health
