    Development of competences while solving real industrial interdisciplinary problems: a successful cooperation with industry

    The development of projects in industrial context constitutes an exceptional opportunity for engineering students to develop competences expected by the labour market. Therefore, the adoption of this type of interaction within engineering curricula is highly recommended, not only at the end of the degree, but also in the previous years. The main purpose of this paper is to present and analyse a Project-Based Learning (PBL) semester in which six teams of Industrial Engineering and Management (IEM) students integrate different areas of knowledge, while solving real problems of five companies, emphasizing the technical solutions developed by the students and the feedback provided by the companies. Students' feedback will be also addressed. The main outcomes of this study reveal that most of the technical solutions lie in areas of Lean applications and ergonomic improvement of workplaces.     Efeitos de alguns adubos nitrogenados sobrea reação do solo

    An experiment was made in pots using a "Terra Roxa Estruturada" soil in order to study the effect of urea, sodium nitrate, ammonium sulfate and di-ammonium phosphate on the soil pH. The pH measure were made 15, 30, 45 and 60 days after begining the incubation period. The nitrogen was employed at the rate of 100 kg/ha. The main conclusions were as follows : 1 - Sodium nitrate did have any effect on the soil pH. 2 - Ammonium phosphate and ammonium sulfate made the soil pH decrease. 3 - Urea did not show any concludent result.Em um experimento feito em vasos, utilizando uma Terra Roxa Estruturada procurou-se verificar a influência dos adubos nitrogenados Uréia, Nitrato de sódio' Sulfato de amônio e Fosfato diamônio (DAP) sobre o pH do solo, dentro de um período de 60 dias de incubação. Foram efetuadas medidas de pH aos 15, 30, 45 e 60 dias após o início da incubação. A dose de N empregada foi de 100 kg/ha. Os principais resultados obtidos foram: 1 - O Nitrato de sódio não alterou o pH do solo. 2 - O DAP e o Sulfato de amônio baixaram o pH do solo. 3 - A Uréia não apresentou resultado concludente

    Agricultura e biodiversidade nas ciências sociais brasileiras: alimentando a comunicação entre ciência e políticas públicas.

    O presente artigo decorre de uma reflexão sustentada em dois pressupostos: a) que as ciências e, em particular, as sociais, podem contribuir para informar as tomadas de decisão e a formulação de políticas públicas visando a melhoria da vida das pessoas no planeta e b) que o papel da agricultura na conservação da biodiversidade é uma questão atual de extrema relevância e que merece ser aprofundada. A relação entre a agricultura e a biodiversidade tem sido objeto de questionamentos recentes na sociedade e no campo das políticas públicas. Contudo, se os estudos relacionados à biodiversidade e à agricultura, separadamente, têm observado um considerável crescimento no Brasil, poucos são os investimentos de pesquisa sobre a relação entre esses dois grandes temas. A partir dessas considerações, seguimos dois objetivos principais: 1) investigar como o papel da agricultura familiar na preservação da biodiversidade tem sido abordado pelas Ciências Sociais no Brasil, particularmente nos artigos publicados em periódicos brasileiros nos últimos 20 anos; 2) testar uma metodologia de revisão bibliográfica, criteriosa, que possa ser útil aos tomadores de decisão em políticas públicas e demais interessados

    Genetic diversity in natural populations of Jacaranda decurrens Cham. determined using RAPD and AFLP markers

    Jacaranda decurrens (Bignoniaceae) is an endemic species of the Cerrado with validated antitumoral activity. The genetic diversity of six populations of J. decurrens located in the State of São Paulo was determined in this study by using molecular markers for randomly amplified polymorphic DNA (RAPD) and amplified fragment length polymorphism (AFLP). Following optimization of the amplification reaction, 10 selected primers generated 78 reproducible RAPD fragments that were mostly (69.2%) polymorphic. Two hundred and five reproducible AFLP fragments were generated by using four selected primer combinations; 46.3% of these fragments were polymorphic, indicating a considerable level of genetic diversity. Analysis of molecular variance (AMOVA) using these two groups of markers indicated that variability was strongly structured amongst populations. The unweighted pair group method with arithmatic mean (UPGMA) and Pearson's correlation coefficient (RAPD -0.16, p = 0.2082; AFLP 0.37, p = 0.1006) between genetic matrices and geographic distances suggested that the population structure followed an island model in which a single population of infinite size gave rise to the current populations of J. decurrens, independently of their spatial position. The results of this study indicate that RAPD and AFLP markers were similarly efficient in measuring the genetic variability amongst natural populations of J. decurrens. These data may be useful for developing strategies for the preservation of this medicinal species in the Cerrado
