Understanding the complex interaction among landscape elements can improve the management of environmental conservation and anthropic activities. The aim of the present study was to develop a methodology that assists in the planning and management, harmonizing the conservation of natural areas with anthropic activities in the city of Ouro Preto (state of Minas Gerais, Brazil). The methodology used the weighted overlay algorithm of the ArcMap™ software, which weights among land use characteristics. In the present study, the following classes were used: slope; relief; soil; landscape ownership by individuals; presence of protected areas; economy; and type of management applied to the preservation or conservation of forests and fields. The most relevant anthropic activities (contained in the classes) were simulated, to the detriment of the forest reduction, according to their spatial locations. Consequently, a map with five weights was obtained, which were verified in the field with their respective descriptions. The physical changes occurred as a reflection of the economy, promoting environmental effects, especially related to the mining, tourism, agricultural and livestock activities, besides conservation of natural areas. All of them require ideally a shared management. The interactions among simulated classes aid to increase information in future planning. Understanding the anthropic and natural processes, which have taken place by either consolidation or isolation along the territory, can assist decision-making on the current directions and in the definition of future proposals. It was noticed that the landscape needs a management which creates sustainable alternatives for anthropic activities.Understanding the complex interaction among landscape elements can improve the management of environmental conservation and anthropic activities. The objective of this work was to adjust the coefficients of six mathematical models and to identify the one that best represents the drying of flint corn grains in a thin layer. For this purpose, a drying column was developed to obtain experimental data. Nine tests were performed for each model, using the velocities of 0.5, 1.0, and 1.5 m s-1 at 40, 50, and 60°C, respectively, for drying air. The thin-layer drying models of Lewis, Page, Thompson, Overhults, Brooker, and Midilli were tested. All adjusted models represent the phenomenon of flint corn drying at 5% probability (χ2 test). After adjusted, the models of Page, Midilli, and Overhults are the best ones for drying corn, with a coefficient of determination equal to 1.000 for all tests and errors lower than 1.0%. For the drying conditions of this work, the n parameter of the model of Page does not depend on the velocity and temperature of drying air, while the k parameter depends only on air temperature, which is confirmed by the analysis of variance. The adjusted model of Page can be used with precision for the prediction of thin-layer flint corn drying

To investigate the usefulness of descriptive terms applied to the sensation of dyspnea (dyspnea descriptors) that were developed in English and translated to Brazilian Portuguese in patients with four distinct clinical conditions that can be accompanied by dyspnea. METHODS: We translated, from English to Brazilian Portuguese, a list of 15 dyspnea descriptors reported in a study conducted in the USA. Those 15 descriptors were applied in 50 asthma patients, 50 COPD patients, 30 patients with heart failure, and 50 patients with class II or III obesity. The three best descriptors, as selected by the patients, were studied by cluster analysis. Potential associations between the identified clusters and the four clinical conditions were also investigated. RESULTS: The use of this set of descriptors led to a solution with nine clusters, designated expiração (exhalation), fome de ar (air hunger), sufoco (suffocating), superficial (shallow), rápido (rapid), aperto (tight), falta de ar (shortness of breath), trabalho (work), and inspiração (inhalation). Overlapping of the descriptors was quite common among the patients, regardless of their clinical condition. Asthma, COPD, and heart failure were significantly associated with the inspiração cluster. Heart failure was also associated with the trabalho cluster, whereas obesity was not associated with any of the clusters. CONCLUSIONS: In our study sample, the application of dyspnea descriptors translated from English to Portuguese led to the identification of distinct clusters, some of which were similar to those identified in a study conducted in the USA. The translated descriptors were less useful than were those developed in Brazil regarding their ability to generate significant associations among the clinical conditions investigated here

One of the biggest challenges on health surveillance during COVID-19 pandemic was surveillance and detection of new cases of infection with the objective of stopping fast disease propagation. Mass gatherings are receiving attention from public authorities, considering their roles in circulating COVID-19 virus on an extensive contingent of people. Considering the limitation for mass laboratory tests, high rates of sub-notification and asymptomatic infections, some complementary surveillance strategies were implemented in many countries, such as sewage epidemiological surveillance. This study aimed to detect the presence of SARS-CoV-2 on sewage of the Araguaína-TO, Brazil, community during a mass gathering; a traditional agricultural exposition that gathered many people in a few weeks. Quantification of SARS-Cov-2 through sewage was performed by RT-qPCR and the detected viral loads were normalized using the population served by the studied sewage points. Data generated were compared to the city’s epidemiological data of clinical and laboratory trials of COVID-19 displaying a sub-notification of infections. Amidst vaccination progression, reduction of symptomatic infections and return of events, sewage monitoring presented itself as a fast alert system, exposing virus circulation in the city before and after an increase in case notifications. Results demonstrated a tool to aid surveillance, indirectly testing hundreds of people through a single sample, therefore, enhancing the health system to give assistance to new cases.
