On the existence of infinitely many closed geodesics on orbifolds of revolution
Using the theory of geodesics on surfaces of revolution, we introduce the
period function. We use this as our main tool in showing that any
two-dimensional orbifold of revolution homeomorphic to S^2 must contain an
infinite number of geometrically distinct closed geodesics. Since any such
orbifold of revolution can be regarded as a topological two-sphere with metric
singularities, we will have extended Bangert's theorem on the existence of
infinitely many closed geodesics on any smooth Riemannian two-sphere. In
addition, we give an example of a two-sphere cone-manifold of revolution which
possesses a single closed geodesic, thus showing that Bangert's result does not
hold in the wider class of closed surfaces with cone manifold structures.Comment: 21 pages, 4 figures; for a PDF version see

An astronomical search for evidence of new physics: Limits on gravity-induced birefringence from the magnetic white dwarf RE J0317-853
The coupling of the electromagnetic field directly with gravitational gauge
fields leads to new physical effects that can be tested using astronomical
data. Here we consider a particular case for closer scrutiny, a specific
nonminimal coupling of torsion to electromagnetism, which enters into a
metric-affine geometry of space-time. We show that under the assumption of this
nonminimal coupling, spacetime is birefringent in the presence of such a
gravitational field. This leads to the depolarization of light emitted from
extended astrophysical sources. We use polarimetric data of the magnetic white
dwarf to set strong constraints on the essential coupling
constant for this effect, giving k^2 \lsim (19 {m})^2 .Comment: Statements about Moffat's NGT modified. Accepted for publication in

Assessing the effectiveness of direct gesture interaction for a safety critical maritime application
Multi-touch interaction, in particular multi-touch gesture interaction, is widely believed to give a more natural interaction style. We investigated the utility of multi-touch interaction in the safety critical domain of maritime dynamic positioning (DP) vessels. We conducted initial paper prototyping with domain experts to gain an insight into natural gestures; we then conducted observational studies aboard a DP vessel during operational duties and two rounds of formal evaluation of prototypes - the second on a motion platform ship simulator. Despite following a careful user-centred design process, the final results show that traditional touch-screen button and menu interaction was quicker and less erroneous than gestures. Furthermore, the moving environment accentuated this difference and we observed initial use problems and handedness asymmetries on some multi-touch gestures. On the positive side, our results showed that users were able to suspend gestural interaction more naturally, thus improving situational awareness
Mass fluxes and isofluxes of methane (CH4) at a New Hampshire fen measured by a continuous wave quantum cascade laser spectrometer
We have developed a midâinfrared continuousâwave quantum cascade laser directâabsorption spectrometer (QCLS) capable of high frequency (â„1 Hz) measurements of 12CH4 and 13CH4 isotopologues of methane (CH4) with in situ 1âs RMS image precision of 1.5 â° and Allanâminimum precision of 0.2 â°. We deployed this QCLS in a wellâstudied New Hampshire fen to compare measurements of CH4 isoflux by eddy covariance (EC) to Keeling regressions of data from automated flux chamber sampling. Mean CH4 fluxes of 6.5 ± 0.7 mg CH4 mâ2 hrâ1 over two days of EC sampling in July, 2009 were indistinguishable from mean autochamber CH4 fluxes (6.6 ± 0.8 mgCH4 mâ2 hrâ1) over the same period. Mean image composition of emitted CH4 calculated using EC isoflux methods was â71 ± 8 â° (95% C.I.) while Keeling regressions of 332 chamber closing events over 8 days yielded a corresponding value of â64.5 ± 0.8 â°. Ebullitive fluxes, representing âŒ10% of total CH4 fluxes at this site, were on average 1.2 â° enriched in 13C compared to diffusive fluxes. CH4 isoflux time series have the potential to improve processâbased understanding of methanogenesis, fully characterize source isotopic distributions, and serve as additional constraints for both regional and global CH4 modeling analysis
Effect of asthma and PTSD on persistence and onset of gastroesophageal reflux symptoms among adults exposed to the September 11, 2001, terrorist attacks
Background:
Little is known about the direction of causality among asthma, posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD), and onset of gastroesophageal reflux symptoms (GERS) after exposure to the 9/11/2001 World Trade Center (WTC) disaster.
Methods:
Using data from the WTC Health Registry, we investigated the effects of early diagnosed post-9/11 asthma and PTSD on the late onset and persistence of GERS using log-binomial regression, and examined whether PTSD mediated the asthma-GERS association using structural equation modeling.
Results:
Of 29,406 enrollees, 23% reported GERS at follow-up in 2011â2012. Early post-9/11 asthma and PTSD were each independently associated with both the persistence of GERS that was present at baseline and the development of GERS in persons without a prior history. PTSD mediated the association between early post-9/11 asthma and late-onset GERS.
Conclusions:
Clinicians should assess patients with post-9/11 GERS for comorbid asthma and PTSD, and plan medical care for these conditions in an integrated fashion
