Photoassociative Frequency Shift in a Quantum Degenerate Gas
We observe a light-induced frequency shift in single-photon photoassociative
spectra of magnetically trapped, quantum degenerate 7Li. The shift is a
manifestation of the coupling between the threshold continuum scattering states
and discrete bound levels in the excited-state molecular potential induced by
the photoassociation laser. The frequency shift is observed to be linear in the
laser intensity with a measured proportionality constant that is in good
agreement with theoretical predictions. The frequency shift has important
implications for a scheme to alter the interactions between atoms in a
Bose-Einstein condensate using photoassociation resonances.Comment: 3 figure
Classical simulation of infinite-size quantum lattice systems in two spatial dimensions
We present an algorithm to simulate two-dimensional quantum lattice systems
in the thermodynamic limit. Our approach builds on the {\em projected
entangled-pair state} algorithm for finite lattice systems [F. Verstraete and
J.I. Cirac, cond-mat/0407066] and the infinite {\em time-evolving block
decimation} algorithm for infinite one-dimensional lattice systems [G. Vidal,
Phys. Rev. Lett. 98, 070201 (2007)]. The present algorithm allows for the
computation of the ground state and the simulation of time evolution in
infinite two-dimensional systems that are invariant under translations. We
demonstrate its performance by obtaining the ground state of the quantum Ising
model and analysing its second order quantum phase transition.Comment: 4 pages, 6 figures, 1 table. Revised version, with new diagrams and

Migration as Adaptation? Exploring The Scope for Co-ordinating Environmental and Migration Policies in the European Union
Analysis of Skylab 2 S193 scatterometer data
SKYLAB II S193 Scatterometer data for the passes of June 5, 1973, over the Gulf of Mexico and June 6, 1973, over Pacific Hurricane AVA were analyzed. The S193 scatterometer measured the radar cross section of the ocean at 13.9 GHz (Ku-band) as a function of incidence angle. The fields-of-view of the scatterometer were known. In the absence of a large body of Ku-band ocean radar data, the results of the NRL experiments at X-band (8.9 GHz) were used for comparison. The S193 data of June 5, 1973, when a practically uniform wind field was present, show reasonable agreement with the NRL empirical and theoretical models
Chiral Spin Textures of Strongly Interacting Particles in Quantum Dots
We probe for statistical and Coulomb induced spin textures among the
low-lying states of repulsively-interacting particles confined to potentials
that are both rotationally and time-reversal invariant. In particular, we focus
on two-dimensional quantum dots and employ configuration-interaction techniques
to directly compute the correlated many-body eigenstates of the system. We
produce spatial maps of the single-particle charge and spin density and verify
the annular structure of the charge density and the rotational invariance of
the spin field. We further compute two-point spin correlations to determine the
correlated structure of a single component of the spin vector field. In
addition, we compute three-point spin correlation functions to uncover chiral
structures. We present evidence for both chiral and quasi-topological spin
textures within energetically degenerate subspaces in the three- and
four-particle system.Comment: 13 pages, 17 figures, 1 tabl
QUASAT: An orbiting very long baseline interferometer program using large space antenna systems
QUASAT, which stands for QUASAR SATELLITE, is the name given to a new mission being studied by NASA. The QUASAT mission concept involves a free flying Earth orbiting large radio telescope, which will observe astronomical radio sources simultaneously with ground radio telescopes. The primary goal of QUASAT is to provide a system capable of collecting radio frequency data which will lead to a better understanding of extremely high energy events taking place in a variety of celestial objects including quasars, galactic nuclei, interstellar masers, radio stars and pulsars. QUASAT's unique scientific contribution will be the increased resolution in the emission brightness profile maps of the celestial objects
Temporal variations in scattering and dispersion measure in the Crab Pulsar and their effect on timing precision
We have measured variations in scattering time scales in the Crab Pulsar over
a 30-year period, using observations made at 610 MHz with the 42-ft telescope
at Jodrell Bank Observatory. Over more recent years, where regular Lovell
Telescope observations at frequencies around 1400 MHz were available, we have
also determined the dispersion measure variations, after disentangling the
scattering delay from the dispersive delay. We demonstrate a relationship
between scattering and dispersion measure variations, with a correlation
coefficient of . The short time scales over which these quantities
vary, the size of the variations, and the close correlation between scattering
and dispersion measure all suggest that the effects are due to discrete
structures within the Crab Nebula, with size scales of AU
(corresponding to an angular size of mas at an assumed distance of 2200
pc). We mitigate the effects of scattering on the observed pulse shape by using
the measured scattering information to modify the template used for generating
the pulse arrival times, thus improving the precision to which the pulsar can
be timed. We test this on timing data taken during periods of high scattering,
and obtain a factor of two improvement in the root mean square of the timing
residuals.Comment: 10 pages, 7 figures. Accepted for publication in MNRA

Tetrachromacy: the mysterious case of extra-ordinary color vision
Recent years have witnessed a growing public interest in human tetrachromacy – the possibility that a subpopulation of women enjoy an extra dimension of color vision. Yet, by contrast, rigorous studies of this unusual phenotype are sparse. The aim here is to offer the reader a guide to the facts and myths regarding this potential‘superpower’ and to address the core methodological issues that need to be considered when investigating it
Directed flow in non-adiabatic stochastic pumps
We analyze the operation of a molecular machine driven by the non-adiabatic
variation of external parameters. We derive a formula for the integrated flow
from one configuration to another, obtain a "no-pumping theorem" for cyclic
processes with thermally activated transitions, and show that in the adiabatic
limit the pumped current is given by a geometric expression.Comment: 5 pages, 2 figures, very minor change
Phase-resolved far-ultraviolet HST spectroscopy of the peculiar magnetic white dwarf RE J0317-853
We present phase resolved FUV HST FOS spectra of the rapidly rotating, highly
magnetic white dwarf RE J0317-853. Using these data, we construct a new model
for the magnetic field morphology across the stellar surface. From an expansion
into spherical harmonics, we find the range of magnetic field strengths present
is 180-800MG. For the first time we could identify an absorption feature
present at certain phases at 1160A as a ``forbidden'' 1s_0 -> 2s_0 component,
due to the combined presence of an electric and magnetic field.Comment: 15 pages including 4 figures. Accepted for publication in ApJ Letter
