Entanglement Energetics in the Ground State
We show how many-body ground state entanglement information may be extracted
from sub-system energy measurements at zero temperature. A precise relation
between entanglement and energy fluctuations is demonstrated in the weak
coupling limit. Examples are given with the two-state system and the harmonic
oscillator, and energy probability distributions are calculated. Comparisons
made with recent qubit experiments show this type of measurement provides

Quantum control without access to the controlling interaction
In our model a fixed Hamiltonian acts on the joint Hilbert space of a quantum
system and its controller. We show under which conditions measurements, state
preparations, and unitary implementations on the system can be performed by
quantum operations on the controller only.
It turns out that a measurement of the observable A and an implementation of
the one-parameter group exp(iAr) can be performed by almost the same sequence
of control operations. Furthermore measurement procedures for A+B, for (AB+BA),
and for i[A,B] can be constructed from measurements of A and B. This shows that
the algebraic structure of the set of observables can be explained by the Lie
group structure of the unitary evolutions on the joint Hilbert space of the
measuring device and the measured system.
A spin chain model with nearest neighborhood coupling shows that the border

Learning democracy in social work
In this contribution, we discuss the role of social work in processes of democracy. A key question in this discussion concerns the meaning of ‘the social’ in social work. This question has often been answered in a self-referential way, referring to a methodological identity of social work. This defines the educational role of social work as socialisation (be it socialisation into obedience or into an empowered citizen). However, the idea of democracy as ‘ongoing experiment’ and ‘beyond order’ challenges this methodological identity of social work. From the perspective of democracy as an ‘ongoing experiment’, the social is to be regarded as a platform for dissensus, for ongoing discussions on the relation between private and public issues in the light of human rights and social justice. Hence, the identity of social work cannot be defined in a methodological way; social work is a complex of (institutionalized) welfare practices, to be studied on their underlying views on the ‘social’ as a political and educational concept, and on the way they influence the situation of children, young people and adults in society
HATS-13b and HATS-14b: two transiting hot Jupiters from the HATSouth survey
We report the discovery of HATS-13b and HATS-14b, two hot-Jupiter transiting
planets discovered by the HATSouth survey. The host stars are quite similar to
each other (HATS-13: V = 13.9 mag, M* = 0.96 Msun, R* = 0.89 Rsun, Teff = 5500
K, [Fe/H] = 0.05; HATS-14: V = 13.8 mag, M* = 0.97 Msun, R* = 0.93 Rsun, Teff =
5350 K, [Fe/H] = 0.33) and both the planets orbit around them with a period of
roughly 3 days and a separation of roughly 0.04 au. However, even though they
are irradiated in a similar way, the physical characteristics of the two
planets are very different. HATS-13b, with a mass of Mp = 0.543 MJ and a radius
of Rp = 1.212 RJ, appears as an inflated planet, while HATS-14b, having a mass
of Mp = 1.071 MJ and a radius of Rp = 1.039 RJ, is only slightly larger in

Does the initiation of urate lowering treatment during an acute gout attack prolong the current episode and precipitate recurrent attacks: a systematic literature review
Objectives: To systematically review the literature on effect of initiating urate lowering treatment (ULT) during an acute attack of gout on duration of index attack and persistence on ULT.
Methods: OVID (MEDLINE), EMBASE and AMED were searched to identify randomized controlled trials (RCTs) of ULT initiation during acute gout attack published in English language. Two reviewers appraised the study quality and extracted data independently. Standardised mean difference (SMD) and relative risk (RR) were used to pool continuous and categorical data. Meta-analysis was carried out using STATA v14.
Results: 537 studies were selected. 487 titles and abstracts were reviewed after removing duplicates. Three RCTs were identified. There was evidence from two high quality studies that early initiation of allopurinol did not increase pain severity at days 10 to 15 (SMDpooled (95%CI) 0.18(-0.58, 0.93)). Data from three studies suggested that initiation of ULT during an acute attack of gout did not associate with drop-outs (RRpooled (95%CI) 1.16(0.58, 2.31)).
Conclusion: There is moderate-quality evidence that the initiation of ULT during an acute attack of gout does not increase pain severity and risk of ULT discontinuation. Larger studies are required to confirm these findings so that patients with acute gout can be initiated on ULT with confidence
Manipulating a qubit through the backaction of sequential partial measurements and real-time feedback
Quantum measurements not only extract information from a system but also
alter its state. Although the outcome of the measurement is probabilistic, the
backaction imparted on the measured system is accurately described by quantum
theory. Therefore, quantum measurements can be exploited for manipulating
quantum systems without the need for control fields. We demonstrate
measurement-only state manipulation on a nuclear spin qubit in diamond by
adaptive partial measurements. We implement the partial measurement via tunable
correlation with an electron ancilla qubit and subsequent ancilla readout. We
vary the measurement strength to observe controlled wavefunction collapse and
find post-selected quantum weak values. By combining a novel quantum
non-demolition readout on the ancilla with real-time adaption of the
measurement strength we realize steering of the nuclear spin to a target state
by measurements alone. Besides being of fundamental interest, adaptive
measurements can improve metrology applications and are key to
measurement-based quantum computing.Comment: 6 pages, 4 figure
A Computational Approach for Designing Tiger Corridors in India
Wildlife corridors are components of landscapes, which facilitate the
movement of organisms and processes between intact habitat areas, and thus
provide connectivity between the habitats within the landscapes. Corridors are
thus regions within a given landscape that connect fragmented habitat patches
within the landscape. The major concern of designing corridors as a
conservation strategy is primarily to counter, and to the extent possible,
mitigate the effects of habitat fragmentation and loss on the biodiversity of
the landscape, as well as support continuance of land use for essential local
and global economic activities in the region of reference. In this paper, we
use game theory, graph theory, membership functions and chain code algorithm to
model and design a set of wildlife corridors with tiger (Panthera tigris
tigris) as the focal species. We identify the parameters which would affect the
tiger population in a landscape complex and using the presence of these
identified parameters construct a graph using the habitat patches supporting
tiger presence in the landscape complex as vertices and the possible paths
between them as edges. The passage of tigers through the possible paths have
been modelled as an Assurance game, with tigers as an individual player. The
game is played recursively as the tiger passes through each grid considered for
the model. The iteration causes the tiger to choose the most suitable path
signifying the emergence of adaptability. As a formal explanation of the game,
we model this interaction of tiger with the parameters as deterministic finite

The LEECH Exoplanet Imaging Survey: Limits on Planet Occurrence Rates Under Conservative Assumptions
We present the results of the largest (m) direct
imaging survey for exoplanets to date, the Large Binocular Telescope
Interferometer (LBTI) Exozodi Exoplanet Common Hunt (LEECH). We observed 98
stars with spectral types from B to M. Cool planets emit a larger share of
their flux in compared to shorter wavelengths, affording LEECH an
advantage in detecting low-mass, old, and cold-start giant planets. We
emphasize proximity over youth in our target selection, probing physical
separations smaller than other direct imaging surveys. For FGK stars, LEECH
outperforms many previous studies, placing tighter constraints on the hot-start
planet occurrence frequency interior to au. For less luminous,
cold-start planets, LEECH provides the best constraints on giant-planet
frequency interior to au around FGK stars. Direct imaging survey
results depend sensitively on both the choice of evolutionary model (e.g., hot-
or cold-start) and assumptions (explicit or implicit) about the shape of the
underlying planet distribution, in particular its radial extent. Artificially
low limits on the planet occurrence frequency can be derived when the shape of
the planet distribution is assumed to extend to very large separations, well
beyond typical protoplanetary dust-disk radii ( au), and when
hot-start models are used exclusively. We place a conservative upper limit on
the planet occurrence frequency using cold-start models and planetary
population distributions that do not extend beyond typical protoplanetary
dust-disk radii. We find that of FGK systems can host a 7 to 10
planet from 5 to 50 au. This limit leaves open the
