Exploring College Student Experiences in a Kinesiology Course Using a Gamified Grading System

Past findings indicate mixed results on the effectiveness of gamification in college courses. The use of a gamified version of specifications-based grading (e.g., gamified grading) is not yet well understood. The purpose of this two-part study was to understand students’ perceptions of intrinsic motivation and engagement in a kinesiology course using gamified grading, facilitated by a gamified grading platform called GradeCraft©. We used qualitative inquiry to capture a robust description of the student experience across a semester, identifying themes describing the course management (e.g., comparison with traditional course, individual approach), and the psychological experience (e.g., autonomy, stress). The following semester, we surveyed students, finding an increase in competence and choice and decrease in pressure from the beginning of the term to the end. Findings suggest that students perceived GradeCraft to promote intrinsic motivation, but only to a small degree and not without some initial stress due to the novelty associated with the gamified grading system

Factors Associated with Revision Surgery after Internal Fixation of Hip Fractures

Background: Femoral neck fractures are associated with high rates of revision surgery after management with internal fixation. Using data from the Fixation using Alternative Implants for the Treatment of Hip fractures (FAITH) trial evaluating methods of internal fixation in patients with femoral neck fractures, we investigated associations between baseline and surgical factors and the need for revision surgery to promote healing, relieve pain, treat infection or improve function over 24 months postsurgery. Additionally, we investigated factors associated with (1) hardware removal and (2) implant exchange from cancellous screws (CS) or sliding hip screw (SHS) to total hip arthroplasty, hemiarthroplasty, or another internal fixation device. Methods: We identified 15 potential factors a priori that may be associated with revision surgery, 7 with hardware removal, and 14 with implant exchange. We used multivariable Cox proportional hazards analyses in our investigation. Results: Factors associated with increased risk of revision surgery included: female sex, [hazard ratio (HR) 1.79, 95% confidence interval (CI) 1.25-2.50; P = 0.001], higher body mass index (fo

In the late sixties rock music was typically seen as an important aspect of the revolutionary counterculture ; but the Beatles’ ‘White Album’ was ambivalently received, amidst allegations of reactionary nostalgia. The song ‘Helter Skelter’ was difficult to classify at the time; its subsequent associations with cult murderers the Manson Family made it notorious. Largely overlooked for several years, the few early covers usually rendered it as hard rock. Later, more generically diverse and deviant renditions would reinflect the song as a critique of the sixties’ countercultural project. Patterns of reclamation and contestation have made covers of the song a telling index of revisionist attitudes to the 1960s and their legacies.À la fin des annĂ©es 1960, on considĂ©rait le rock comme un aspect important de la contre-culture rĂ©volutionnaire.

Global camera trap synthesis highlights the importance of protected areas in maintaining mammal diversity

The establishment of protected areas (PAs) is a central strategy for global biodiversity conservation. While the role of PAs in protecting habitat has been highlighted, their effectiveness at protecting mammal communities remains unclear. We analyzed a global dataset from over 8671 camera traps in 23 countries on four continents that detected 321 medium- to large-bodied mammal species. We found a strong positive correlation between mammal taxonomic diversity and the proportion of a surveyed area covered by PAs at a global scale (ÎČ = 0.39, 95% confidence interval [CI] = 0.19–0.60) and in Indomalaya (ÎČ = 0.69, 95% CI = 0.19–1.2), as well as between functional diversity and PA coverage in the Nearctic (ÎČ = 0.47, 95% CI = 0.09–0.85), after controlling for human disturbances and environmental variation. Functional diversity was only weakly (and insignificantly) correlated with PA coverage at the global scale (ÎČ = 0.22, 95% CI = −0.02–0.46), pointing to a need to better understand the functional response of mammal communities to protection. Our study provides important evidence of the global effectiveness of PAs in conserving terrestrial mammals and emphasizes the critical role of area-based conservation in a post-2020 biodiversity framework
