An examination of new ventures going through the initial public offering: The impact of firm capabilities and characteristics on performance.
Entrepreneurship as a field of study generally focuses on the pursuit of new opportunities and the activities of firms engaged in bringing new ideas to financial fruition. Due to their liability of newness, growth and survival are never a certainty for new ventures; indeed, organizational failure is much more common. Those new ventures that do attain a modicum of success often seek to "go public" through an initial public offering (IPO) of their stock in order to raise additional capital. This three-essay dissertation examines the performance of a sample of new ventures both at the time of the IPO as well as one year hence. The first study examines how venture capitalists (VCs) assist their organizations during the post-IPO period. Results suggest that VCs assist their organizations in reacting better to identified threats. The second study examines the nature of the underwriting process and identifies when greater underpricing is expected. Results provide evidence that underwriters pursue greater underpricing when possible (likely in order to create loyalty among their institutional investors). On the other hand, we find that new ventures can mitigate the likelihood of underpricing by reducing their information asymmetry concerning the value of the venture and by demonstrating stronger insider representation on the board of directors. The third study examines how signals impact the new venture at the time of the IPO. We find that the lockup period is often used in lieu of other signals which may be unavailable (such as prestigious underwriter backing or venture capital backing). Ventures with higher uncertainty or performance problems at the time of the IPO can reduce investor uncertainty and concomitantly the amount of underpricing when the lockup period is extended
Chaste: an open source C++ library for computational physiology and biology
Chaste - Cancer, Heart And Soft Tissue Environment - is an open source C++ library for the computational simulation of mathematical models developed for physiology and biology. Code development has been driven by two initial applications: cardiac electrophysiology and cancer development. A large number of cardiac electrophysiology studies have been enabled and performed, including high performance computational investigations of defibrillation on realistic human cardiac geometries. New models for the initiation and growth of tumours have been developed. In particular, cell-based simulations have provided novel insight into the role of stem cells in the colorectal crypt. Chaste is constantly evolving and is now being applied to a far wider range of problems. The code provides modules for handling common scientific computing components, such as meshes and solvers for ordinary and partial differential equations (ODEs/PDEs). Re-use of these components avoids the need for researchers to "re-invent the wheel" with each new project, accelerating the rate of progress in new applications. Chaste is developed using industrially-derived techniques, in particular test-driven development, to ensure code quality, re-use and reliability. In this article we provide examples that illustrate the types of problems Chaste can be used to solve, which can be run on a desktop computer. We highlight some scientific studies that have used or are using Chaste, and the insights they have provided. The Stock Market Evaluation of IPO-Firm Takeovers
We conduct an event study to assess the stock market evaluation of public takeover announcements. Unlike the majority of previous research, we specifically focus on acquisitions targeted at newly public IPO-firms and show that the stock market positively evaluates these M&As as R&D. However, bidders' abnormal announcement returns are significantly lower for takeovers directed at targets with critical intangible assets and innovative capabilities inalienably bound to their initial owners than for those that have internally accumulated respective resources and capabilities. We explain these findings with the acquirer's post-acquisition dependence on continued access to the IPO-firm founders' target-specific human capital. Our results contribute to literature in that they show that the stock market perceives these potential impediments to successful exploitation of acquired strategic resources and thus identify a potential cause for heretofore mostly inconsistent evidence on bidder abnormal returns in corporate takeovers found in previous research
Appendicectomy plus standard medical therapy versus standard medical therapy alone for maintenance of remission in ulcerative colitis (ACCURE): a pragmatic, open-label, international, randomised trial
BackgroundThe appendix might have an immunomodulatory role in ulcerative colitis. Appendicectomy has been suggested as a potentially therapeutic intervention to maintain remission in ulcerative colitis. We aimed to evaluate the clinical effectiveness of laparoscopic appendicectomy in maintaining remission in patients with ulcerative colitis.MethodsWe did a pragmatic, open-label, international, randomised controlled superiority trial in 22 centres across the Netherlands, Ireland, and the UK. Patients with established ulcerative colitis who were in remission but had been treated for disease relapse within the preceding 12 months were randomly assigned (1:1) to undergo appendicectomy plus continued maintenance medical therapy (intervention group) or to continue maintenance medical therapy alone (control group). Randomisation was done with a central, computer-generated allocation concealment, stratified by disease extent. Patients and treating physicians were unmasked to group allocation. The prespecified primary outcome was the proportion of patients with a disease relapse within 1 year, predefined as a total Mayo score of 5 or higher with an endoscopic subscore of 2 or 3, or, in absence of endoscopy, based on a centrally independent masked review by a critical event committee as an exacerbation of abdominal symptoms (eg, elevated stool frequency subscore of ≥1 point from baseline) with a rectal bleeding subscore of ≥1 or faecal calprotectin level above 150 μg/g or necessitating treatment intensification other than mesalazine. Analyses were done on an intention-to-treat principle. This trial is complete and was registered with the Netherlands Trial Register (NTR2883) and ISRCTN (ISRCTN60945764).FindingsBetween Sept 20, 2012, and Sept 21, 2022, 1386 patients were screened. 201 patients were randomly assigned to the appendicectomy group (n=101) or the control group (n=100). After exclusion of four patients due to eligibility violations (three had active disease and one received biological agents at time of randomisation), 99 patients in the appendicectomy group and 98 patients in the control group were included in the intention-to-treat analyses. The 1-year relapse rate was significantly lower in the appendicectomy group than in the control group (36 [36%] of 99 patients vs 55 [56%] of 98 patients; relative risk 0·65 [95% CI 0·47–0·89]; p=0·005; adjusted p=0·002). Adverse events occurred in 11 (11%) of 96 patients in the appendicectomy group and 10 (10%) of 101 patients in the control group. The most frequently reported adverse events were postoperative temporary self-limiting abdominal pain in the appendicectomy group (three [3%] patients) and skin rash in the control group (three [3%] patients). Two cases (2%) of low-grade appendiceal mucinous neoplasm were incidentally found in resected appendix specimens in the appendicectomy group. Serious adverse events occurred in two (2%) of 96 patients who underwent appendicectomy and none in the control group. There were no deaths.InterpretationAppendicectomy is superior to standard medical therapy alone in maintaining remission in patients with ulcerative colitis
The effects of venture capital syndicate diversity on earnings management and performance of IPOs in the US and UK: An institutional perspective
This study examines the extent to which principal-principal agency conflicts within venture capital (VC) syndicates lead to additional principal-agent conflicts in IPO firms in two institutional contexts. Using a matched sample of 274 VC-backed IPOs in the US and the UK, it shows that the diversity of a VC syndicate increases pre-IPO discretionary current accruals, used as a proxy for earnings management, but the impact of such diversity is higher in the US. There
is also evidence of higher underpricing and lower aftermarket performance in firms with higher
earnings management and VC diversity, and these negative performance effects are also higher in the US. Our findings indicate that local and informal institutions have a significant effect on multiple agency conflicts in IPO firms and performance outcomes
