Center-based care and parenting activities
We estimate the effects of center-based care on parenting activities with children using data from time diaries and a family survey for Germany. Our estimates imply that usage of center-based care reduces the amount of time that a parent spends with their enrolled child, but only small negative effects on the amount of time spent on parenting activities. Correspondingly, center-based care increases parenting activities as a share of time spent with the child. Our estimates of direct (center hours) and indirect effects (evening and weekend) are more pronounced for parents in households where the mother has lower educational attainment
Maternal life satisfaction and child development from toddlerhood to adolescence
In this paper we analyse the association between maternal well-being and child development at different ages. We use data from the German Socio-Economic Panel (SOEP) which captures maternal life satisfaction and numerous cognitive and non-cognitive child development outcomes. We identify a strong positive association between mothers' life satisfaction and their children's development when these are toddlers (2-3 years, VAB scores), of primary school age (5-10 years, SEB scores and Big 5) and in adolescence (11-14 years, life satisfaction, school grades and self-reported Big 5). This relationship holds when we control for a wide range of potentially confounding factors, including maternal education, employment, household income and maternal personality traits. We confirm our main findings with an IV estimation where we instrument contemporaneous maternal life satisfaction with that measured pre-birth and with a value-added model as some child outcomes are observed twice at different ages. Our findings suggest that mothers' life satisfaction is beneficial for their children's development at all ages and that it is fruitful for policy makers to identify measures through which maternal well-being can be raised

Biological Risk Assessment of Three Dental Composite Materials following Gas Plasma Exposure
Gas plasma is an approved technology that generates a plethora of reactive oxygen species, which are actively applied for chronic wound healing. Its particular antimicrobial action has spurred interest in other medical fields, such as periodontitis in dentistry. Recent work has indicated the possibility of performing gas plasma-mediated biofilm removal on teeth. Teeth frequently contain restoration materials for filling cavities, e.g., resin-based composites. However, it is unknown if such materials are altered upon gas plasma exposure. To this end, we generated a new in-house workflow for three commonly used resin-based composites following gas plasma treatment and incubated the material with human HaCaT keratinocytes in vitro. Cytotoxicity was investigated by metabolic activity analysis, flow cytometry, and quantitative high-content fluorescence imaging. The inflammatory consequences were assessed using quantitative analysis of 13 different chemokines and cytokines in the culture supernatants. Hydrogen peroxide served as the control condition. A modest but significant cytotoxic effect was observed in the metabolic activity and viability after plasma treatment for all three composites. This was only partially treatment time-dependent and the composites alone affected the cells to some extent, as evident by differential secretion profiles of VEGF, for example. Gas plasma composite modification markedly elevated the secretion of IL6, IL8, IL18, and CCL2, with the latter showing the highest correlation with treatment time (Pearson’s r > 0.95). Cell culture media incubated with gas plasma-treated composite chips and added to cells thereafter could not replicate the effects, pointing to the potential that surface modifications elicited the findings. In conclusion, our data suggest that gas plasma treatment modifies composite material surfaces to a certain extent, leading to measurable but overall modest biological effects
Lumbar vertebropexy after unilateral total facetectomy
BACKGROUND CONTEXT
Posterior decompression with spinal instrumentation and fusion is associated with well-known complications. Alternatives that include decompression and restoration of native stability of the motion segment without fusion continue to be explored, however, an ideal solution has yet to be identified.
PURPOSE
The aim of this study was to test two different synthetic lumbar vertebral stabilization techniques that can be used after unilateral total facetectomy.
STUDY DESIGN
Biomechanical cadaveric study.
METHODS
Twelve spinal segments were biomechanically tested after unilateral total facetectomy and stabilized with a FiberTape cerclage. The cerclage was pulled through the superior and inferior spinous process (interspinous technique) or through the spinous process and around both laminae (spinolaminar technique). The specimens were tested after (1) unilateral total facetectomy, (2) interspinous vertebropexy and (3) spinolaminar vertebropexy. The segments were loaded in flexion-extension (FE), lateral shear (LS), lateral bending (LB), anterior shear (AS) and axial rotation (AR).
RESULTS
Unilateral facetectomy increased native ROM in FE by 10.6% (7.6%-12.6%), in LS by 25.8% (18.7%-28.4%), in LB 7.5% (4.6%-12.7%), in AS 39.4% (22.6%-49.2%), and in AR by 27.2% (15.8%-38.6%). Interspinous vertebropexy significantly reduced ROM after unilateral facetectomy: in FE by 73% (p=.001), in LS by 23% (p=.001), in LB by 13% (p=.003), in AS by 16% (p=.007), and in AR by 20% (p=.001). In FE and LS the ROM was lower than in the baseline/native condition. In AS and AR, the baseline ROM was not reached by 17% and 1%, respectively. Spinolaminar vertebropexy significantly reduced ROM after unilateral facetectomy: in FE by 74% (p=.001), in LS by 24% (p=.001), in LB by 13% (p=.003), in AS by 28% (p=.004), and in AR by 15 % (p=.001). Baseline ROM was not reached by 9% in AR.
CONCLUSION
Interspinous vertebropexy seems to sufficiently counteract destabilization after unilateral total facetectomy, and limits range of motion in flexion and extension while avoiding full segmental immobilization. Spinolaminar vertebropexy additionally restores native anteroposterior stability, allowing satisfactory control of shear forces after facetectomy.
CLINICAL SIGNIFICANCE
Lumbar vertebropexy seems promising to counteract the destabilizating effect of facetectomy by targeted stabilization

Europium cyclooctatetraene nanowire carpets: A low-dimensional, organometallic, and ferromagnetic insulator
We investigate the magnetic and electronic properties of europium cyclooctatetraene (EuCot) nanowires by means of low-temperature X-ray magnetic circular dichroism (XMCD) and scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) and spectroscopy (STS). The EuCot nanowires are prepared in situ on a graphene surface. STS measurements identify EuCot as an insulator with a minority band gap of 2.3 eV. By means of Eu M5,4 edge XMCD, orbital and spin magnetic moments of (−0.1 ± 0.3)μB and (+7.0 ± 0.6)μB, respectively, were determined. Field-dependent measurements of the XMCD signal at the Eu M5 edge show hysteresis for grazing X-ray incidence at 5 K, thus confirming EuCot as a ferromagnetic material. Our density functional theory calculations reproduce the experimentally observed minority band gap. Modeling the experimental results theoretically, we find that the effective interatomic exchange interaction between Eu atoms is on the order of millielectronvolts, that magnetocrystalline anisotropy energy is roughly half as big, and that dipolar energy is approximately ten times lower
