Ancient Wisdom and the Modern Temper. On the Role of Greek Philosophy and the Jewish Tradition in Hans Jonas’s Philosophical Anthropology

    Get PDF
The question on the essence of man and his relationship to nature is certainly one of the most important themes in the philosophy of Hans Jonas. One of the ways by which Jonas approaches the issue consists in a comparison between the contemporary interpretation of man and forms of wisdom such as those conveyed by ancient Greek philosophy and the Jewish tradition. The reconstruction and discussion of these frameworks play a fundamental role in Jonas’s critique of the modern mind. In the first section I introduce the anthropological problem in Hans Jonas’s oeuvre. Moreover, I clarify why it becomes essential for Jonas to resort to different forms of traditional wisdom. In the second and third sections I try to give an account (as complete as possible) of the two generalisations which Jonas shapes in order to criticise the modern concepts of man and nature. In the last section I show how Jonas links these generalisations to his own philosophical assessment of modernity. Finally, I focus on his methodology, which exemplifies how critical thinking may arise from a reconsideration of traditional contents

Jewish Philosophies After Heidegger: Imagining a Dialogue between Jonas and Levinas

    Get PDF
Emmanuel Levinas and Hans Jonas draw on their roots in phenomenology and Judaism to answer the ethical nihilism of Heidegger\u27s thought. Though both Levinas and Jonas aim to ground an imperative of responsibility in a Good-in-itself ultimately sourced in God, their disagreements are basic and revolve around three fundamental questions: (1) Can Jews after Auschwitz have a theology without lapsing into theodicy?; (2) Is the Good-in-itself within Being or otherwise than Being ?; and (3) Is ethics the completion of nature or against nature? I explore possibilities for integrating the apparently incompatible ideas of Levinas and Jonas

    Emergent Leadership Detection Across Datasets

    Get PDF
Automatic detection of emergent leaders in small groups from nonverbal behaviour is a growing research topic in social signal processing but existing methods were evaluated on single datasets -- an unrealistic assumption for real-world applications in which systems are required to also work in settings unseen at training time. It therefore remains unclear whether current methods for emergent leadership detection generalise to similar but new settings and to which extent. To overcome this limitation, we are the first to study a cross-dataset evaluation setting for the emergent leadership detection task. We provide evaluations for within- and cross-dataset prediction using two current datasets (PAVIS and MPIIGroupInteraction), as well as an investigation on the robustness of commonly used feature channels (visual focus of attention, body pose, facial action units, speaking activity) and online prediction in the cross-dataset setting. Our evaluations show that using pose and eye contact based features, cross-dataset prediction is possible with an accuracy of 0.68, as such providing another important piece of the puzzle towards emergent leadership detection in the real world.Comment: 5 pages, 3 figure

ANALYZING SELF-ACTUALIZATION OF JONAS CHARACTER IN THE GIVER NOVEL

This study concerns with Self-Actualization in The Giver novel. Aiming to find the character and personality of Jonas through the Self-Actualization described in the novel. The source of data is taken from The Giver novel by Lois Lowry. This study used Self-Actualization theory by Abraham Maslow. The researchers was employed that Jonas has bravery, sensitive feelings, and intelligence. The results of this research showed that self-actualization found in Jonas are: 1) objective perception, (2) general acceptance of nature, others and oneself, (3) spontaneity, simplicity, and naturalness behaving, (4) needs for privacy and independence, (5) autonomous functioning, (6) freshness of appreciation, (7) mystical or “peak” experiences, (8) concern in social interest, (9) interpersonal relations, (10) recognize discrimination between means and ends, good and evil, (11) present creativeness. When Jonas gets the memories from The Giver, then he shows his self-actualization. The memories open up his mind to think, and to realize that the real world is much beautiful with the difference between one and another. Thus, Jonas is a dynamic character. From Jonas self-actualization, he tries to recognize his own self, develop his ability, his personal uniqueness, and to actualize his potentials as a human being that capable of becoming what he wants to achieve.

'A woman like any other' : female sodomy, hermaphroditism and witchcraft in seventeenth-century Bruges

    Get PDF
This article discusses the official and popular responses to a particular sodomy trial held at Bruges in 1618 during which two women, Mayken and Magdaleene, were accused of several sexual and moral transgressions. The interrogation records of the accused female sodomites illustrate the remarkable self-consciousness of early modern women with same-sex desires. Their attitudes collided, however, with popular mentalities towards female sodomy, which local testimonies explained away as a physical abnormality or an act of diabolical witchcraft. This article offers an in-depth analysis of these discourses in order to gain a fuller understanding of the perception of female sodomy in early modern urban society

Constitutional Law: Evidence Obtained During an Administrative Search Without a Warrant Held Inadmissible in Subsequent Criminal Prosecution

For small integrated CMOS digital chips that communicate via analog signals the size and the cost of the AD-converters is a problem. An integrated CMOS AD-converter that could be built into the chip would solve this problem. In a CMOS process, the manufacturers only guarantee a very low accuracy of the recistances. The components of the ADC is therefore very inaccurate. The purpose of this report is to present a method for identication of the errors in the ADC and to perform simulations that evaluate the method. The estimated values can then be used in the chip to compensate for the errors in the ADC
