    WaveCat, a novel overtopping Wave Energy Converter, was tested with the aim of determining its performance under different sea states, establishing a starting point for optimisation of the device, numerical model validation and proof-of-concept for the control systems. The tests were carried out at a 1:30 scale in the Ocean Basin of the COAST Laboratory at University of Plymouth. A state-of-the-art control system was implemented, and overtopping rates and device motions were recorded alongside the wave field. It was observed that power generation is dependent on both the wave height and period, with smaller periods tending to produce greater overtopping rates, and therefore greater power generation, for the same wave height. Due to time constraints in the laboratory, only one configuration of draft/freeboard was tested; with this configuration, overtopping occurred under significant wave heights of 0.083 m or more, corresponding to 2.5 m or more in prototype values. These experimental results form the basis for future development and optimisation of WaveCat

    A Spatially Robust ICA Algorithm for Multiple fMRI Data Sets

    In this paper we derive an independent-component analysis (ICA) method for analyzing two or more data sets simultaneously. Our model extracts independent components common to all data sets and independent data-set-specific components. We use time-delayed autocorrelations to obtain independent signal components and base our algorithm on prediction analysis. We applied this method to functional brain mapping using functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI). The results of our 3-subject analysis demonstrate the robustness of the algorithm to the spatial misalignment intrinsic in multiple-subject fMRI data sets. 1

    SUMOylation of DISC1: a potential role in neural progenitor proliferation in the developing cortex

    DISC1 is a multifunctional, intracellular scaffold protein. At the cellular level, DISC1 plays a pivotal role in neural progenitor proliferation, migration, and synaptic maturation. Perturbation of the biological pathways involving DISC1 is known to lead to behavioral changes in rodents, which supports a clinical report of a Scottish pedigree in which the majority of family members with disruption of the DISC1 gene manifest depression, schizophrenia, and related mental conditions. The discrepancy between modest evidence in genetics and strong biological support for the role of DISC1 in mental conditions suggests a working hypothesis that regulation of DISC1 at the protein level, such as posttranslational modification, may play a role in the pathology of mental conditions. In this study, we report on the SUMOylation of DISC1. This posttranslational modification occurs on lysine residues where the small ubiquitin-related modifier (SUMO) and its homologs are conjugated to a large number of cellular proteins, which in turn regulates their subcellular distribution and protein stability. By using in silico, biochemical, and cell-biological approaches, we now demonstrate that human DISC1 is SUMOylated at one specific lysine 643 (K643). We also show that this residue is crucial for proper neural progenitor proliferation in the developing cortex

    “True fan = watch match”? In Search of the ‘Authentic’ Soccer Fan.

    Academics have created typologies to divide association football (soccer) fans into categories based upon the assumed ‘authenticity’ of their fandom practices. One of the main requirements of ‘authentic’ fandom has been assumed to be match attendance. The goal of this paper was to critically assess this assumption through considering how fans themselves talk about the significance of match attendance as evidence of ‘authentic’ fandom. In light of the fact that the voices of English non-league fans on the ‘authenticity’ debate have so far been overshadowed by the overbearing focus of much previous research on the upper echelons of English soccer, an e-survey was conducted with 151 members of an online community of fans of English Northern League (NL) clubs (a semi-professional / amateur league based in North East England). Findings revealed that opinion was divided on the constituents of ‘authentic’ fandom and match attendance was not deemed to be the core evidence of support for a club by 42% of the sample. Elias (1978) suggested that dichotomous thinking hinders sociological understanding and it is concluded that fan typologies are not sufficient for assessing the ‘authenticity’ of fan activities

    Luminosity Functions of XMM-LSS C1 Galaxy Clusters

    CFHTLS optical photometry has been used to study the galaxy luminosity functions of 14 X-ray selected clusters from the XMM-LSS survey. These are mostly groups and poor clusters, with masses (M_{500}) in the range 0.6 to 19x10 ^{13} M_solar and redshifts 0.05-0.61. Hence these are some of the highest redshift X-ray selected groups to have been studied. Lower and upper colour cuts were used to determine cluster members. We derive individual luminosity functions (LFs) for all clusters as well as redshift-stacked and temperature-stacked LFs in three filters, g', r' and z', down to M=-14.5. All LFs were fitted by Schechter functions which constrained the faint-end slope, alpha, but did not always fit well to the bright end. Derived values of alpha ranged from -1.03 to as steep as -2.1. We find no evidence for upturns at faint magnitudes. Evolution in alpha was apparent in all bands: it becomes shallower with increasing redshift; for example, in the z' band it flattened from -1.75 at low redshift to -1.22 in the redshift range z=0.43-0.61. Eight of our systems lie at z~0.3, and we combine these to generate a galaxy LF in three colours for X-ray selected groups and poor clusters at redshift 0.3. We find that at z~0.3 alpha is steeper (-1.67) in the green (g') band than it is (-1.30) in the red (z') band. This colour trend disappears at low redshift, which we attribute to reddening of faint blue galaxies from z~0.3 to z~0. We also calculated the total optical luminosity and found it to correlate strongly with X-ray luminosity (L_X proportional to L_OPT^(2.1)), and also with ICM temperature (L_OPT proportional to T^(1.62)), consistent with expectations for self-similar clusters with constant mass-to-light ratio. We did not find any convincing correlation of Schechter parameters with mean cluster temperature.Comment: 23 pages, 17 figure
