    Over the past two decades, the financial services industry has experienced a significant increase in competition and internal rivalry. Driven by deregulation and advances in information technologies, many historical institutional distinctions among financial intermediaries have disappeared or blurred considerably. The fundamental assumption that has guided many of the policy changes is that consumers are best served when businesses offering the same services are allowed to compete within a similar regulatory or institutional environment. Despite this general leveling of the playing field, credit unions continue to operate under tax and regulatory rules that differ, in important ways, from most of the firms in the financial services industry. Many of the tax and regulatory distinctions arose in the early 20th century during a time when credit unions were being established to meet the needs of individuals or communities that could not or were not being adequately served by commercial banks.     A method and apparatus are disclosed for maintaining continuous, long-term microbial control in the water supply for potable, hygiene, and experimental water for space activities, as well as treatment of water supplies on Earth. The water purification is accomplished by introduction of molecular iodine into the water supply to impart a desired iodine residual. The water is passed through an iodinated anion exchange resin bed. The iodine is bound as I-(sub n) at the anion exchange sites and releases I(sub 2) into the water stream flowing through the bed. The concentration of I(sub 2) in the flowing water gradually decreases and, in the prior art, the ion-exchange bed has had to be replaced. In a preferred embodiment, a bed of iodine crystals is provided with connections for flowing water therethrough to produce a concentrated (substantially saturated) aqueous iodine solution which is passed through the iodinated resin bed to recharge the bed with bound iodine. The bed of iodine crystals is connected in parallel with the iodinated resin bed and is activated periodically (e.g., by timer, by measured flow of water, or by iodine residual level) to recharge the bed. Novelty resides in the capability of inexpensively and repeatedly regenerating the ion-exchange bed in situ

    The effects of increased exports from NAFTA member countries on the U.S. domestic catfish industry were evaluated. Results showed that the quantity of catfish imported will fall if the domestic price of catfish falls relative to the import price. Past imports have no effect on present imports. The income elasticity was negative indicating that imported catfish may be an inferior good.     Sharing the Wealth: Movement Toward Gender Parity in Managerial & Professional Specialty Occupations from 1950 to 1980

    Data on the managerial and professional specialty occupations that were specified by the United States Census of the Population for the years 1950 through 1980 were used to analyze the influence of occupational sex ratios, growth rates, and male and female salary levels on the ability of females to move into those occupations. An analysis of the change in the Standardized Occupational Sex Ratio (SSR) showed that, over the thirty year period studied, growth rates became more important than salary levels in influencing movement toward parity in high status occupations. Before the 1980 census year, occupational growth rates were found to interact with both male and female salary levels. During all four census years, slowly growing occupations experienced the smallest movement toward parity regardless of salary level. The lack of movement toward parity in slowly growing occupations shows evidence of gender division. In rapidly growing fields, lower salary levels for both males and females led to greater movement toward parity for females. Movement toward parity in rapidly growing fields that offered lower salaries was taken as evidence of less sheltering. In declining fields, occupations with above median female salaries allowed greater female entry than did those with below median female salaries. The opportunity for women to move into declining fields showed evidence of chain mobility. By 1980, females were moving into managerial and professional specialty occupations at every salary level and growth rate; however, the greatest movement toward parity occurred in those occupations that were rapidly growing. Movement toward parity in rapidly growing occupations provided evidence of structural mobility. By 1980, rapidly growing occupations were experiencing fair sharing of occupational opportunity.     Thesis (Ph.D.) University of Alaska Fairbanks, 2000The three-dimensional velocity, attenuation and b-value structure is mapped beneath the Katmai group volcanoes, located in south-central Alaska. Data for these studies include 4320 earthquakes recorded in the period July 26, 1995 to November 30, 1999 on a 5--18 station short-period seismograph array. The velocity structure is determined by inversion of P-wave travel-times for 8041 rays from 815 earthquakes. The inversion revealed the lowest velocities (3.6--5.0 km/s) centered beneath Novarupta, Trident and Mageik volcanoes between the surface and 4 km below sea level and moderately lower velocities at 0--6 km depth between Martin volcano and Katmai caldera (4.5--6.0 km/s). Higher relative velocities (5.0--6.5 km/s) prevail outboard of the volcanic axis and at Griggs volcano. The attenuation structure is determined by inversion of the amplitude spectra roll off to obtain t* for 1301 rays from 230 earthquakes in the magnitude range (0.8 < ML < 1.8). The inversion, which is well constrained in the depth range 0--6 km, reveals higher attenuation along the volcanic axis 1/Q = 0.008-0.018 (55 < Q < 125) and lower attenuation in non-volcanic regions of the study area 1/Q = 0.01--0.000 (100 < Q < infinity). The attenuation is greatest beneath Mageik, Trident and Novarupta (1/Q = 0.018; Q = 55) between the surface and 6 km below sea level. Frequency-magnitude distributions are determined by mapping b-values for ~1300 earthquakes larger than the magnitude of completeness (0.7 ML). The analysis reveals high b -values at Mageik volcano (1.2--2.2), intermediate b-values at Martin (1.0--1.6) and Katmai caldera (1.2--1.4) and low b-values at Trident (0.6--1.2). Results point to the existence of a large region of partially molten rock centered beneath Mageik, Novarupta and Trident volcanoes at 0--4 km depth. The localized nature of the high b-value zone at Mageik volcano suggests that the magma is discontinuous, occurring as several distinct bodies. The deeper high attenuation anomaly might mark the now solidified but highly fractured plumbing system associated with the 1912 Novarupta eruption

    Metabolism of selenium-75 in the erythrocytes of sheep and growing calves

    Four mature wethers and four Holstein-Hereford steers were dosed with a single intrajugular injection of 75Se as selenious acid in order to determine red blood cell life spans. Blood samples collected in heparin were taken at two and eight hours, daily for 10 days, weekly for 12 weeks, and biweekly until the end of the experiment. One ml of each sample was washed in buffered saline, corrected to 100% with the packed cell volume, and used to determine the amount of 75Se present in one ml of washed cells. One ml of plasma was collected in order to determine the selenium activity. The remainder of the blood sample was used in 75Se chromatographic analysis and 75Se incorporation studies. The red blood cell life span of the sheep averaged 123 days, while that of the younger and older calves averaged 114 and 141 days respec-tively. Analysis of the selenoprotein by Dowex 50-8X ion exchange chromatography failed to reveal either selenomethionine or selenocystine. 75 Other short-term incorporation studies suggested that 75Se was bound to the sulfur of amino acids and not actually incorporated into the protein molecule. 75Se proved to be adequate in determining the red cell life span of calves and sheep. Although studies on the manner of selenium incorporation into protein were not conclusive, methodologies evolved will be useful in continued studies on the metabolism of selenium in sheep
