    The effect of a strong external radiation field on protostellar envelopes in Orion

    We discuss the effects of an enhanced interstellar radiation field (ISRF) on the observables of protostellar cores in the Orion cloud region. Dust radiative transfer is used to constrain the envelope physical structure by reproducing SCUBA 850 micron emission. Previously reported 13CO, C17O and H2CO line observations are reproduced through detailed Monte Carlo line radiative transfer models. It is found that the 13CO line emission is marginally optically thick and sensitive to the physical conditions in the outer envelope. An increased temperature in this region is needed in order to reproduce the 13CO line strengths and it is suggested to be caused by a strong heating from the exterior, corresponding to an ISRF in Orion 10^3 times stronger than the "standard" ISRF. The typical temperatures in the outer envelope are higher than the desorption temperature for CO. The C17O emission is less sensitive to this increased temperature but rather traces the bulk envelope material. The data are only fit by a model where CO is depleted, except in the inner and outermost regions where the temperature increases above 30-40 K. The fact that the temperatures do not drop below approximately 25 K in any of the envelopes whereas a significant fraction of CO is frozen-out suggest that the interstellar radiation field has changed through the evolution of the cores.     The environmental archaeological evidence from the site of Flixborough (in particular the animal bone assemblage) provides a series of unique insights into Anglo-Saxon life in England during the 8th to 10th centuries. The research reveals detailed evidence for the local and regional environment, many aspects of the local and regional agricultural economy, changing resource exploitation strategies and the extent of possible trade and exchange networks. Perhaps the most important conclusions have been gleaned from the synthesis of these various lines of evidence, viewed in a broader archaeological context. Thus, bioarchaeological data from Flixborough have documented for the first time, in a detailed and systematic way, the significant shift in social and economic aspects of wider Anglo-Saxon life during the 9th century AD., and comment on the possible role of external factors such as the arrival of Scandinavians in the life and development of the settlement

    Emergence of fractal behavior in condensation-driven aggregation

    We investigate a model in which an ensemble of chemically identical Brownian particles are continuously growing by condensation and at the same time undergo irreversible aggregation whenever two particles come into contact upon collision. We solved the model exactly by using scaling theory for the case whereby a particle, say of size xx, grows by an amount αx\alpha x over the time it takes to collide with another particle of any size. It is shown that the particle size spectra of such system exhibit transition to dynamic scaling c(x,t)tβϕ(x/tz)c(x,t)\sim t^{-\beta}\phi(x/t^z) accompanied by the emergence of fractal of dimension df=11+2αd_f={{1}\over{1+2\alpha}}. One of the remarkable feature of this model is that it is governed by a non-trivial conservation law, namely, the dfthd_f^{th} moment of c(x,t)c(x,t) is time invariant regardless of the choice of the initial conditions. The reason why it remains conserved is explained by using a simple dimensional analysis. We show that the scaling exponents β\beta and zz are locked with the fractal dimension dfd_f via a generalized scaling relation β=(1+df)z\beta=(1+d_f)z.Comment: 8 pages, 6 figures, to appear in Phys.     Transient photovoltage in GaN as measured by atomic force microscope tip

    We studied restoration of the band bending at the surface of undoped GaN layers after illumination with above-bandgap light. The photovoltage saturated with illumination at about 0.2–0.3 eV at room temperature, although the upward band bending for GaN in the dark is of the order of 1 eV. We attribute the photovoltage effect to charging of the surface states, the density of which is estimated at about 10^12 cm^−2. Restoration of the barrier after a light pulse is simulated by a phenomenological model whereby the acceptorlike surface states are emptied of electrons under illumination and filled back in dark due to thermionic transfer of free electrons from the bulk to the surface states over the near-surface barrier. Photoinduced desorption of oxygen also affects the value of the photovoltage if the illumination is prolonged

    A grid of upper atmosphere models for 1--40 MEARTH planets: application to CoRoT-7 b and HD219134 b,c

    There is growing observational and theoretical evidence suggesting that atmospheric escape is a key driver of planetary evolution. Commonly, planetary evolution models employ simple analytic formulae (e.g., energy limited escape) that are often inaccurate, and more detailed physical models of atmospheric loss usually only give snapshots of an atmosphere's structure and are difficult to use for evolutionary studies. To overcome this problem, we upgrade and employ an already existing upper atmosphere hydrodynamic code to produce a large grid of about 7000 models covering planets with masses 1 - 39 Earth mass with hydrogen-dominated atmospheres and orbiting late-type stars. The modeled planets have equilibrium temperatures ranging between 300 and 2000 K. For each considered stellar mass, we account for three different values of the high-energy stellar flux (i.e., low, moderate, and high activity). For each computed model, we derive the atmospheric temperature, number density, bulk velocity, X-ray and EUV (XUV) volume heating rates, and abundance of the considered species as a function of distance from the planetary center. From these quantities, we estimate the positions of the maximum dissociation and ionisation, the mass-loss rate, and the effective radius of the XUV absorption. We show that our results are in good agreement with previously published studies employing similar codes. We further present an interpolation routine capable to extract the modelling output parameters for any planet lying within the grid boundaries. We use the grid to identify the connection between the system parameters and the resulting atmospheric properties.     The Large and Small Scale Structures of Dust in the Star-Forming Perseus Molecular Cloud

    We present an analysis of ~3.5 square degrees of submillimetre continuum and extinction data of the Perseus molecular cloud. We identify 58 clumps in the submillimetre map and we identify 39 structures (`cores') and 11 associations of structures (`super cores') in the extinction map. The cumulative mass distributions of the submillimetre clumps and extinction cores have steep slopes (alpha ~ 2 and 1.5 - 2 respectively), steeper than the Salpeter IMF (alpha = 1.35), while the distribution of extinction super cores has a shallow slope (alpha ~ 1). Most of the submillimetre clumps are well fit by stable Bonnor-Ebert spheres with 10K < T < 19K and 5.5 < log_10(P_ext/k) < 6.0. The clumps are found only in the highest column density regions (A_V > 5 - 7 mag), although Bonnor-Ebert models suggest that we should have been able to detect them at lower column densities if they exist. These observations provide a stronger case for an extinction threshold than that found in analysis of less sensitive observations of the Ophiuchus molecular cloud. The relationship between submillimetre clumps and their parent extinction core has been analyzed. The submillimetre clumps tend to lie offset from the larger extinction peaks, suggesting the clumps formed via an external triggering event, consistent with previous observations.Comment: 38 pages, 12 figures, accepted by Astrophysical Journal slight changes to original due to a slight 3" error in the coordinates of the SCUBA ma

    Fourier Transform Spectroscopy of the submillimetre continuum emission from hot molecular cores

    We have used a Fourier Transform Spectrometer on the James Clerk Maxwell Telescope to study the submillimetre continuum emission from dust in three hot molecular cores (HMC). The spectral index beta of the dust emission for these sources has been determined solely within the 30 GHz wide 350 GHz (850 micron) passband to an accuracy comparable to those determined through multi-wavelength observations. We find an average beta = 1.6, in agreement with spectral indices determined from previous submillimetre observations of these sources and with those determined for HMC in general. The largest single source of uncertainty in these results is the variability of the atmosphere at 350 GHz, and with better sky subtraction techniques we show that the dust spectral index can clearly be determined within one passband to high accuracy with a submillimetre FTS. Using an imaging FTS on SCUBA-2, the next generation wide-field submillimetre camera currently under development to replace SCUBA at the JCMT in 2006, we calculate that at 350 GHz it will be possible to determine beta to +/- 0.1 for sources as faint as 400 mJy/beam and to +/- 0.3 for sources as faint as 140 mJy/beam.Comment: 11 pages, 5 figures, accepted for publication in MNRA
