Design and Implementation of a Single-Phase AC-DC Conversion System Including Multiple Outputs

Power conversion between alternating and direct current is a common application of Electrical Engineering in daily life, and most modern technology relies heavily on regulating voltage and current flow. This paper discusses the theoretical underpinnings, design, and assembly of a custom power converter built to convert the standard US outlet power of 120VAC to a 18.5V DC source and a 5V DC source: the goal of this device is to create a charger that can power a laptop and USB port at the same time with a single wall plug. The paper discusses the theoretical background of such a device, along with the practical aspects of its implementation. The design is then reviewed, and possible improvements noted

Public Access Screenings: An Ontological Inquiry into Cinematic Street Art

Street art is a blossoming field of aesthetics, but aestheticians have yet to elucidate a theory of the relationship between street art and film. Film and street art seem intuitively antithetical. Street art is a static art form that interacts with the physical space it inhabits, while film moves and requires projection onto a surface. These intuitions, however prevalent in society, neglect the burgeoning styles of avant-garde film and street art that subvert tropes of both artforms. I assert that film-as-street-art, or cinematic street art, is feasible practice, both philosophically and practically. I discuss the extant ontologies of street art and endorse Bacharach’s theory of aconsensuality, which emphasizes the importance of avoiding seeking permission when creating street art. Subsequently, I discuss two ontologies of film: Walton’s transparency thesis and Carroll’s ontology of film, and argue in favor of Carroll. Utilizing the frameworks of Bacharach and Carroll, my research dissects two examples of potential examples of cinematic street art, the practice of video painting and the short film MUTO, which I argue cannot be defined as cinematic street art. Second, I suggest types of cinematic street art and provide a theory for cinematic street art as a practice. The distinct practice of cinematic street art requires that an artwork be placed aconsensually, make the street essential to the function of the artwork, and retain the qualities of a film that Carroll lays out

The Inhibitory Effect of CBD on Proinflammatory Cytokine, IL-6, in LPS-Mediated Inflamed THP-1 Differentiated Macrophage Cells

About 1.5 million Americans suffer from Rheumatoid Arthritis (RA), an autoimmune, chronic inflammatory disease with no cure. This is a condition in which the immune system mistakenly attacks healthy cells, leaving the body in a constant state of inflammation. A major characteristic of RA is unresolved inflammation specifically in the joints of the hands, wrists, and knees. People who have RA suffer from a lot of pain, experience bone, and joint deformity, and have a loss of function in the targeted areas. In patients with RA, the immune system is not working properly, and the immune responses are unregulated. Due to being an autoimmune disorder, our B cells are presenting healthy cells with autoantigens that trigger multiple signaling pathways that lead to the release of cytokines. A primary cytokine, IL-6, plays a role in the pathogenesis of RA due to its pro-inflammatory effects. IL-6 causes the release of acute phase proteins which cause fevers, iron deficiency, fatigue, fat and muscle loss, anorexia, and weakness. One way to treat RA is to target the inflammation directly by interrupting cytokine release. In this work, the effect of CBD was evaluated to determine if its application has the potential to decrease IL-6 expression/release by inflamed cells. Macrophages derived from THP-1 Cells cultured with PMA were treated with LPS to model inflammation in vitro and the expression of IL-6 was determined by ELISA to correlate in a dose-dependent manner to LPS

Health and Nutrition in Vermont Children

Introduction. The AHA (American Heart Association) supports legislation in Ver- mont ensuring that restaurants’ children’s menu meals meet certain nutritional standards. This study investigated Vermont parents’ attitudes towards both dining at restaurants with their children and potential legislation to improve nutritional standards of restaurant food. Methods. An anonymous 21-question survey for parents with children under age 18 was distributed electronically to local organizations via Facebook groups and email, and as paper questionnaires at the Community Health Center of Burlington. Questions probed parents’ overall attitudes surrounding their children’s health, habits pertaining to eating at restaurants, and attitudes towards legislation to ensure healthier options for kids at restaurants. Results were analyzed to look for dominant themes and determine differences between subgroups. Results. 98% of survey participants agreed or strongly agreed that their children’s eating habits are important to them. When asked if they would support legislation to set nutrition standards on children’s menu meals in Vermont, 73% agreed or strongly agreed. Most survey participants eat at a restaurant once per week or less (95%). 53% of survey participants agreed or strongly agreed that there were enough restaurants with healthy kids’ meals in their area. Responses did not differ by county. Conclusion. Vermont parents are concerned about their children’s diets and acknowledge connections between nutrition, obesity, and overall health. Parents favor restaurants providing more nutritional items on children’s menus and support the AHA’s proposed standards. Next steps include investigating any financial impact on restaurants and studying nutritional standards in school cafeterias in Vermont.https://scholarworks.uvm.edu/comphp_gallery/1257/thumbnail.jp

Cinematic street art? Exploring the limits of the philosophy of street art

As artforms, film and street art seem incompatible. Contra this incompatibility, I investigate their combination: cinematic street art. Two promising cases are the artworks MUTO and Repopulate, but I argue neither is suitable. MUTO only counts if I accept the transparency thesis, the claim that photographs allow us to literally see their depicta. Repopulate only counts if we reject Noel Carroll’s requirement that a cinematic performance token isn’t itself an artwork. However, these imperfect cases demonstrate what is required in order to have cinematic street art: the artwork is a 1) aconsensual artwork that 2) does not merely use street art as imagery or 3) merely use the street as a performance space. I introduce two hypothetical artworks inspired by this approach and discuss their merits, as well as their pitfalls relevant to my own desiderata. As such, this article serves as the foment for broader discussion within the philosophy of street art
