Modelling the impact of alternative fare structures on train overcrowding
The Strategic Rail Authority (SRA) provides the backbone to rail regulation in Great Britain. As part of its responsibilities, the SRA monitors overcrowding on trains which it measures in terms of the proportion of passengers on trains in excess of the seat capacity for longer distance services, and with an allowance for standing passengers on shorter journeys of less than 20 minutes. Overcrowding on Britain’s railways fell during the early 1990s but has been on the increase since 1996 with particularly acute problems in the morning peak for services travelling to London. In a study conducted on behalf of the SRA we developed the PRAISE rail operations model to include penalties for overcrowding based upon journey purpose, journey time and degree of overcrowding. Using demand, fares and timetable information for an actual case study route, we examine how fares and ticketing restrictions can be set to manage demand throughout the day without significantly reducing the overall demand for rail travel
Laser sintered body armour – establishing single layer stab protection
Purpose
The purpose of this research was to establish the minimum thickness required to provide stab protection in accordance with the United Kingdom Home Office Scientific Development Branch (HOSDB) standards while testing a series of Laser Sintered (LS) planar specimens using instrumented test apparatus.
Design/methodology/approach
Planar test specimens were Laser Sintered in single layer thicknesses ranging from 1.00 to 15.00 mm in four material powder categories – Duraform® virgin; Duraform® 50/50 mix, Duraform EX® virgin; and Duraform EX® 50/50 mix. All specimens were tested using instrumented drop test apparatus and were impacted with established Stanley Tools 1992 trimming blades to the UK HOSDB KR1-E1 stab impact energy.
Findings
The research demonstrated that a minimum single planar specimen thickness of 11.00 mm, manufactured from Duraform EX® 50/50 mix powder, was required to provide protection against the HOSDB KR1-E1 level of stab impact energy. The alternative powder mixes tested within this experiment demonstrated poor levels of stab protection – with virgin powder specimens demonstrating no protection up to 15.00 mm, while Duraform® 50/50 mix specimens demonstrating inconsistent performances.
Originality/value
This paper enhances on existing literature surrounding the manufacturing and testing of AM stab resistant armour by adding further rigor to the testing of AM body armour specimens. In addition this research establishes key foundation characteristics which could be utilised for the future development of bespoke AM body armour garments
Green synthesis of Ag, Zn and Cu nanoparticles from aqueous extract of Spondias mombin leaves and evaluation of their antibacterial activity
Background: Nanotechnology offers an advantage as a green route for synthesis of metal nanoparticles (NPs) with plant extracts as capping agent. Spondias mombin is a fruit-bearing tree and its leaf extracts have been reported to possess anxiolytic, hypoglycaemic, antiepileptic, antipsychotic, sedative, antioxidant, and antimicrobial properties. The objective of the study is to determine the antibacterial potential of a simple non-toxic product of green synthesis of metallic (Ag, Zn and Cu) nanoparticles using the leaf of Spondias mombin aqueous extracts (SMAE) as a reducing and capping agents of the metal ions.Methodology: Nanoparticles were characterized by UV visible spectrophotometeric analysis, Fourier Transform Infra-Red (FT-IR) spectrophotometer and scanning electron microscope (SEM). Antimicrobial activities of synthesized NPs against Escherichia coli, Staphylococcus aureus and Pseudomonas aeruginosa were determined by agar well diffusion technique. Results: The synthesized NPs varied in colour from dark brown to green and appears dominantly spherical, occasionally rod or triangular shaped with size ranging from 65-90 nm. UV spectroscopy absorption spectra of Ag, Zn and Cu NPs had absorbance peak at 267, 262 and 765 nm respectively. FT-IR spectrometry of Zn NP, Cu NP, and SMAE gave wave number ranging from 895.71-3320.67, 747.02-3225.45 and 658.25-3674.49 respectively. FT-IR analysis showed that SMAE acted as reducing and stabilizing agent while the NPs exhibited lower energy absorption band when compared to the plant extract. The NPs demonstrated higher antimicrobial activities against S. aureus than Ps. aeruginosa and E. coli. The antimicrobial activity was higher with copper NP than Ag and Zn NPs, and also higher than SMAE.Conclusion: The result from this study presents an indication for an alternative means for development of novel antimicrobial agents for clinical and biotechnological applications.
The thermodynamic limit of the Whitham equations
The infinite-genus limit of the KdV-Whitham equations is derived. The limit
involves special scaling for the associated spectral surface such that the
integrated density of states remains finite as (the
thermodynamic type limit). The limiting integro-differential system describes
slow evolution of the density of states and can be regarded as the kinetic
equation for a soliton gas
Protection of cattle from Culicoides spp. in Australia by shelter and chemical treatments
Trials were conducted in three regions of Australia to investigate the potential for improvised shelters and chemical treatments to reduce feeding by Culicoides on cattle and thereby minimise the risk of bluetongue transmission during transport of cattle to ports. Various designs and combinations of roofs and walls were placed around penned cattle. Chemical treatments were applied to other penned cattle. Culicoides were collected from the cattle by vacuum samplers or by light traps in the pens. Roofs alone did not consistently reduce the numbers of Culicoides brevitarsis or C. fulvus and increased the numbers of C. actoni collected. Walls alone reduced the numbers of C. wadai but not C. brevitarsis. Roofs and walls in combination reduced the numbers of C. brevitarsis and C. wadai. The chemical treatments ‘Flyaway’ (a blend of repellents) and fenvalerate reduced the numbers of C. brevitarsis and C. wadai up to 52 h post treatment
The Design and Assessment of Bio-Inspired Additive Manufactured Stab Resistant Armour
The performance of modern fibre-based or Polycarbonate armour has
significantly progressed since their introduction, providing protection against a
range of low and high velocity threats. While this is so, users of such armour
frequently report of issues relating to their operational suitability resulting in
impaired performance and physiological effects. Recently researchers have
focussed on how naturally occurring protective mechanisms could be utilised to
enhance the protective and operational performance of wearers of engineered
body armour. The research presented within this paper therefore utilises a series
of key design characteristics exhibited within naturally occurring elasmoid scale
armour, coupled with established Laser Sintering manufacturing parameters, for
the realisation and assessment of a scale-based stab resistant armoured structure
to internationally recognised test standards
On asymptotically equivalent shallow water wave equations
The integrable 3rd-order Korteweg-de Vries (KdV) equation emerges uniquely at
linear order in the asymptotic expansion for unidirectional shallow water
waves. However, at quadratic order, this asymptotic expansion produces an
entire {\it family} of shallow water wave equations that are asymptotically
equivalent to each other, under a group of nonlinear, nonlocal, normal-form
transformations introduced by Kodama in combination with the application of the
Helmholtz-operator. These Kodama-Helmholtz transformations are used to present
connections between shallow water waves, the integrable 5th-order Korteweg-de
Vries equation, and a generalization of the Camassa-Holm (CH) equation that
contains an additional integrable case. The dispersion relation of the full
water wave problem and any equation in this family agree to 5th order. The
travelling wave solutions of the CH equation are shown to agree to 5th order
with the exact solution
