    New research on bioregenerative air/water purification systems

    For the past several years, air and water purification systems have been developed and used. This technology is based on the combined activities of plants and microorganisms as they function in a natural environment. More recently, researchers have begun to address the problems associated with indoor air pollution. Various common houseplants are currently being evaluated for their abilities to reduce concentrations of volatile organic compounds (VOCS) such as formaldehyde and benzene. With development of the Space Exploration Initiative, missions will increase in duration, and problems with resupply necessitates implementation of regenerative technology. Aspects of bioregenerative technology have been included in a habitat known as the BioHome. The ultimate goal is to use this technology in conjunction with physicochemical systems for air and water purification within closed systems. This study continued the risk assessment of bioregenerative technology with emphasis on biological hazards. In an effort to evaluate the risk for human infection, analyses were directed at enumeration of fecal streptococci and enteric viruses with the BioHome waste water treatment system

    Behavior of oceanic crustal magnetization at high temperatures: Viscous magnetization and the marine magnetic anomaly source layer

    Although the source layer for marine magnetic anomalies has been assumed to be the extrusive basalts of uppermost ocean crust, recent studies indicate that lower crustal rocks may also contribute. Because the temperature at which magnetization of crustal rocks achieves long-term stability is crucial to any source layer contribution, we undertook high-temperature VRM (viscous remanent magnetization) experiments on samples of basalt, dike and gabbroic sections. Samples were heated at temperature intervals up to Tc, while a magnetic field was applied for periods between 6 hours and 28 days. Results show that the dike and gabbro samples achieve maximum VRM acquisition near 250°C, well below the Tc of 580°C. The basalt sample shows a peak at 68°C, also well below Tc. Results of this pilot study indicate that the critical isotherm for stable magnetization acquisition is defined by the VRM behavior of the specific crustal section

    Force Dynamics in Weakly Vibrated Granular Packings

    The oscillatory force F_b^ac on the bottom of a rigid, vertically vibrated, grain filled column, reveals rich granular dynamics, even when the peak acceleration of the vibrations is signicantly less than the gravitational acceleration at the earth's surface. For loose packings or high frequencies, F_b^ac 's dynamics are dominated by grain motion. For moderate driving conditions in more compact samples, grain motion is virtually absent, but F_b^ac nevertheless exhibits strongly nonlinear and hysteretic behavior, evidencing a granular regime dominated by nontrivial force-network dynamics.Comment: 4 pages, 5 figure

    Observations of a midlatitude squall line boundary layer wake

    Includes bibliographical references (pages 90-93).June 1987.Mesoscale pressure perturbations frequently observed with mesoscale convective systems (MCS) are examined with special emphasis on the characteristics, structure, lifecycle and driving mechanism of the "wake depression" found in the wake region of the convection. A severe squall line which traversed the OK PRE-STORM surface and upper air mesonetwork on 10-11 June 1985 is the focus of this observational study. Extensive surface, upper air and digitized radar data collected during the OK PRE-STORM field experiment were used for analysis. Various mesoanalyses of this squall line at the surface and aloft have allowed for intensive examination of three pressure features observed with this squall line: the mesohigh, wake depression and pre-squall mesolow. Their relationship to and interaction with other meteorological parameters such as precipitation, temperature, potential temperature and moisture are explored. Furthermore, the mesoscale system-relative "jets" observed with midlatitude squall lines are examined for their possible influence on the pressure field. The mesohigh develops quickly during the early growth of the squall line and precedes the wake depression by several hours. The predominant mesohigh is linked to the formation of a large cold pool which developed as a result of widespread hail and intense rainfall from a supercell ahead of the young squall line. Analyses show that the wake depression is not a uniform, stagnant feature behind the mesohigh but has embedded small-scale features, a distinct lifecycle and can undergo rapid intensification. The wake depression also is related to some aspects of the squall line's precipitation pattern. The low consistently "hugs" the back edge of the stratiform precipitation and is observed to split into two separate lows as the convective line splits. Additionally, the wake depression is a hydrostatic response to a layer of warm, dry air (produced by subsidence) found just above the surface. It is suggested that the wake depression is in part a surface manifestation of forced subsidence by the descending rear inflow jet.Sponsored by the National Science Foundation - ATM-8507961

    Thermal Analyses of the Los Angeles Smog Aerosol

    It has been shown by earlier studies on the formation of the Los Angeles smog aerosol, that a significant fraction of the particulate matter in the visible size range is made by secondary gas-particle conversion processes, and that it consists mainly of liquid matter. In this study the volatility was studied quantitatively by heating the smog aerosol up to 250°C and simultaneously measuring the scattering coefficient using a nephelometer and the change of size distribution by an optical counter. The thermal analyses revealed that 50–80% of the submicron aerosol mass is volatile at 220°C. Inspection of the shapes of thermo-nephelograms (bscat vs temperature) also revealed that photochemically formed aerosols have distinctly different thermo-nephelograms than those obtained on humid “hazy” days. Thus it is suggested that thermal analyses may at least in some instances provide the means of on-line monitoring the origin of the ambient aerosol

    We describe two original open source software applications that have been developed to aid model efficiency studies: (1) CSTEP (Cluster Sampling for Tail Estimation of Probability) for reducing sampling error through variations of distance sampling and cluster/pivot processes; and (2) AMOOF2 (Actuarial Model Outcome Optimal Fit Version 2.0) for mitigating small sample bias in parametric, time-efficient probability density function fitting. CSTEP uses the scenario reduction method of representative scenarios to sample scenarios from a population of stochastic scenarios to obtain a sample-run distribution of a financial outcome that can be analyzed by AMOOF2 to fit the optimal probability density function

    Urban Evolution: The Role of Water

    The structure, function, and services of urban ecosystems evolve over time scales from seconds to centuries as Earth’s population grows, infrastructure ages, and sociopolitical values alter them. In order to systematically study changes over time, the concept of “urban evolution” was proposed. It allows urban planning, management, and restoration to move beyond reactive management to predictive management based on past observations of consistent patterns. Here, we define and review a glossary of core concepts for studying urban evolution, which includes the mechanisms of urban selective pressure and urban adaptation. Urban selective pressure is an environmental or societal driver contributing to urban adaptation. Urban adaptation is thesequential process by which an urban structure, function, or services becomes more fitted to its changing environment or human choices. The role of water is vital to driving urban evolution as demonstrated by historical changes in drainage, sewage flows, hydrologic pulses, and long-term chemistry. In the current paper, we show how hydrologic traits evolve across successive generations of urban ecosystems via shifts in selective pressures and adaptations over time. We explore multiple empirical examples including evolving: (1) urban drainage from stream burial to stormwater management; (2) sewage flows and water quality in response to wastewater treatment; (3) amplification of hydrologic pulses due to the interaction between urbanization and climate variability; and (4) salinization and alkalinization of fresh water due to human inputs and accelerated weathering. Finally, we propose a new conceptual model for the evolution of urban waters from the Industrial Revolution to the present day based on empirical trends and historical information. Ultimately, we propose that water itself is a critical driver of urban evolution that forces urban adaptation, which transforms the structure, function, and services of urban landscapes, waterways, and civilizations over time
